Why did I drink 2 bottles of wine!

So, I was making a Sunday roast yesterday, opened a bottle of wine and before I knew it 2 had gone! This is not a regular occasion and don’t think I have ever done that before. It was over the course of about 6 hours but I am paying for it today.

can anybody else manage 2 bottles?

@Isitchristmasyett ignore the choir of judgement. There are a lot of people on here who get validation from being judgemental arseholes to strangers. You know you won’t repeat the 2 bottles incident. They are a lot slower to learn. Mostly as they would never be so bold IRL so have lost the fear of repercussions.
Never forget those who preach perfection online are very often projecting a fantasy life they themselves don’t live.

Yeah this. ^ It smacks of attention seeking. Bit like a thread on here the other week, about smoking, where multiple posters came on (around 2 dozen) to say how 'great' smoking is/was, and how they love it so much (or miss it sooo much coz they quit some years ago.) And it was apparent how cool they thought they were filling their lungs with noxious cigarette fumes.🙄

See also people who smoke cannabis, and people who 'do drugs'/used to 'do drugs.' All seem to think they're dead edgy and cool. (Like the 'I can sink 2 bottles of wine in one sitting' brigade, who mock and deride anyone who doesn't drink much alcohol (or any at all...)🙄

Didn’t come across like that to me. At all. But then I paid attention to what OP said about going through a break up just a month ago and her ex already being with someone else. I took it that she’d done something out of the ordinary because of the circumstances, was worried and turned to MN for a bit of advice. Only to be met with shitty comments like yours because you can’t see beyond your own experience and clearly enjoy sitting in judgement.

I only did 2 bottles when I had an issue with alcohol. That’s minimum 20 units. You won’t have been sober again until 20 hours after you started drinking. Hope you didn’t drive the next morning.

12 per cent wine according to OP. Between 8 and 9 units per bottle.

6-7 pints is also not giving ‘relaxed way to pull together a roast, haven’t even eaten yet’ either though, is it

Didn’t say it was.

@Rosscameasdoody 30 units for 10 pints of beer is for the higher strength stuff if around 5.2%. The poster was right.

The average pint of beer served in a pub is 4% alcohol, not 5.2. It’s between two and three units of alcohol per pint. And I qualified it by comparing it against high alcohol strength of 13.5% in the wine.

This is a common misunderstanding of what alcohol being a depressant meant. It doesn’t mean it makes you depressed. It means it depresses your nervous system - aka stops you from functioning properly.

It’s not a misunderstanding. Aclohol is a depressant and can significantly affect mental health as a result of its effects on a chemical neurotransmitter - gamma aminobutyric acid, which normally has a relaxing effect. Small amounts of alcohol can stimulate this neurotransmitter and cause enhanced feelings of relaxation, but heavy drinking can deplete it, causing increased tension and feelings of panic, especially during withdrawal in heavy drinkers.

I just don’t agree with kicking people whilst they are already down

You've just got hangxiety, you're not exactly 'down'. Nit sure what you thought you'd get from aibu? Anyway, you'll be fine tomorrow

Your ex is an arsehole, and I'm sorry you're having a hard time.

Alcohol is a depressant, so it's not going to make you feel better about things.

I don't drink now (lone parent), but recommend junk food to help you feel better.

it was probably longer, I opened the wine at 3pm and went to bed at around 11

Hopefully you had some good music on OP

BadActingParsley · 27/07/2025 19:43

I could drink 2 bottles over 6 hours. I'd feel like crap the next day. But I wouldn't be falling over. I'm not a massive drinker really.

Radioundermypillow · 27/07/2025 19:43

I have drunk two bottles of wine before together with a couple of vodka and tonics and lived to tell the tale. It's not great if it is a regular thing obviously! As a one off its fine

I don't think anyone has been an "arse" but you are being one there.

You asked if anyone could down 2 bottles of wine whilst cooking. No. I couldn't. Even when I socialised and drank a lot more than I do now it would take several hours to get through 2 bottles. Whilst cooking, I don't think I'd get through more than a couple of glasses.

I know this is an online forum and people are entitled to their opinions, but I would rather be an alcoholic than be stuck up my own arse.

Diet Coke and soft boiled eggs with soldiers for me!

Marmite on toast and full sugar coke ftw!

OP, don't worry as a one off it's ok. You're obviously coping with a lot and you're aware of how much you drunk. At my peak I could mange 3 bottles a night, but I was a problem drinker and I told myself it was ok (just for the record, I know it's not ok!) at the time.

From what you've said I doubt you'll be rushing to do it again

It was 12%

Hopefully the hangover passes soon, I find good food, lots of hydration, a long soak and an early night help, although easier said then done with kids!

mauvaiseherbe · 27/07/2025 19:11

I like to cook with wine… I’ll even put some in the food

EmeraldShamrock000 · 27/07/2025 19:07

At least you were at home. I had 7 glasses of wine at an all day event last year.
My bmi is low, plus I'm an occasional drinker, no tolerance, never again, missing huge memory gaps from the day, luckily I was with family.
It scared me.
I haven't been drunk since.

Halfquarterbag · 27/07/2025 19:01

Because it was nice wine.

Have I won a prize?

SoftPillow · 27/07/2025 19:00

Oh OP, you made a daft mistake and we’ve all done that in our own way before. Even the pearl clutchers will have messed-up at some point.

I don’t think you’re an alcoholic, I just think you’ve had a tough time recently, needed a release, and had too much.

Hope you feel better tomorrow, don’t be too hard on yourself. No one was hurt, nothing bad happened, your hangover will pass.

KnewYearKnewMe · 27/07/2025 18:57

OP, sounds like you’re in a very emotional situation with your split being very recent.

lots of people react emotionally in this situation - drink more than they usually would for a while, and/or comfort eat, anxiety-not-eat.

be kind to yourself. Loads of alcohol, often, is not a good idea for all the reasons you know.

but keeping going on the wine as a one-off - not the end of the world xx

Spaghettihair · 27/07/2025 18:52

Rosscameasdoody · 27/07/2025 18:50

10 pints of beer is around 30 units of alcohol. Two bottles of wine even at a high strength of 13.5% volume would be between 18-20 units.

6-7 pints is also not giving ‘relaxed way to pull together a roast, haven’t even eaten yet’ either though, is it
