Why did I drink 2 bottles of wine!

So, I was making a Sunday roast yesterday, opened a bottle of wine and before I knew it 2 had gone! This is not a regular occasion and don’t think I have ever done that before. It was over the course of about 6 hours but I am paying for it today.

can anybody else manage 2 bottles?

If you started drinking early and it’s not something you do regularly I can’t see the issue. I managed to polish off 2 bottles of Prosecco on Xmas day over the course of about 8 hours, haven’t even finished off 1 bottle in one go since so not like I’m doing it every weekend.

WaterOfADucksBack · 28/07/2025 20:12

I dont drink hardly at all now but in a certain time of my life id have a bottle of wine before going out! No idea how.
You said its rare. Perhaps you've stuff on your mind. Dont overthink it and just avoid two bottles in the future.
If you are ever worried then there plenty of helplines out there 😉 .

Bluedenimdoglover · 28/07/2025 20:11

You know it's too much, so why ask anyone else? Up to you what you do, but you can't expect sympathy for something you chose to do.

Kitkat2065 · 28/07/2025 20:05

Glass when you start cooking, glass mid cooking when the veg goes on, glass with the meal, glass with the washing up, glass when you sit down and relax.....might as well finish the second bottle before bed! Easily done. As long as it's not every day ..... No problem! Can I come to yours for lunch 🤣

Cece92 · 28/07/2025 20:02

If you never drink 2 bottles of wine usually and it’s a one off you’re far from an alcoholic. You were cooking and enjoying your wine. It’s hardly breaking bad. Stop being hard on yourself. X

VerbenaGirl · 28/07/2025 19:59

I don’t think that two bottles of wine is that shocking. So much depends on how and why it’s been drunk. Gradual consumption over time at the weekend while cooking and eating, as long as it’s not getting regular, is not a big deal. Depends a lot on your tolerance for wine as well.

Soberinthecity · 28/07/2025 19:57

Quite easily and very, very regularly - I couldn’t always though.

As my name suggests I’m sober and I have been for many years. Two bottles of wine is a huge quantity of alcohol to consume in one sitting so you obviously have quite a high tolerance for it already. I’d keep an eye on it for sure.

Anyway, it’s not the amount you drink or how often that makes you an alcoholic.

I couldn't drink one, let alone two

Congratulations.

I couldn't drink one, let alone two

I just don’t agree with kicking people whilst they are already down

That’s honestly how some people get their thrills. Ignore them. It says more about them than you. You sound like a perfectly normal human being, muddling though the shit show that it life. Just do your thing and don’t beat yourself up over something most people have done at some point in their lives.

Orangeandpinknails · 28/07/2025 19:42

I'm a large lady at 18 stone and 2 bottles would make me drunk! However I'm not judging you, I've found I'm drinking more recently... did you have guests around? Or just alone? Are you happy with your life?

NotOvertheWorstofit · 28/07/2025 19:42

Some of the comments on this thread are hilarious 😆.

I grew up in a large family of scousers who drank wine most nights whilst having a sing along with the guitar. Did we drink more than we should some nights? Sure! But it doesn’t mean we were alcoholics.

I've just recently lost my Dad and have probably had a fair few nights where I've drank more than I should but it’s helped get me though some rough evenings.

DO NOT feel guilty in the slightest OP. Life is hard and we all have our different ways of release. Don’t doubt yourself or feel the need to look for external validation. Enjoy the creature comforts today. Nice food, lovely shower and a good film. Sod spending the day making yourself feel worse with guilt. Embrace it and indulge in some tlc. Life is short and no need to waste any time berating ourselves for feeling good in the moment. Hugs.

VickiG85 · 28/07/2025 19:33

Welcome to being judged.

if you can drink two bottles to yourself and it’s not a regular occurrence, what’s the harm.
i don’t think I could solo, but certainly with pals.
enjoy it and if you want to do it again, go for it. Ignore all the ‘you have a problem’ posts - life is for living and it’s hard enough at the mo so if this is what you enjoy, occasionally 😉, have fun. if it’s all the time, perhaps cut down a little

I will not be doing this again in a hurry, feel absolutely awful

Which? Having two bottles of wine or coming to MN to be told you're an alchy.

I have had 2 bottles over the course of a day out with friends and felt dreadful the next day. It's not a big deal OP.

Flozle · 28/07/2025 19:15

Probably I could over six hours. Other nights I can take six hours to down one glass. If it’s not a regular occurrence then you’re probably fine. If you’re doing it frequently then maybe you need to reassess. But the pearl clutchers will tell you otherwise.

Chinsupmeloves · 28/07/2025 19:13

Yes it can be so easily done, little top ups consistently and before you know it... I've been out at dos where glasses topped up and worked out I'd had about 3 bottles of wine (after and eve) plus cocktails! Steady and with eating and dancing.

I really wouldn't beat yourself up about it as you realise this was unusual.

Well OP, I think that it can happen when the “vibe” is right. When I read your post I could see me in the kitchen, enjoying cooking, music on and looking forward to having family over for dinner. The first bottle can disappear easily when you are busy and happy, the second bottle would seem right but be seriously regretted later. You live and learn. If it isn’t a habit don’t stress about it.

asrl78 · 28/07/2025 18:23

No I could never manage two bottles. I hardly ever have more than two glasses in one sitting. I have a low alcohol tolerance and whilst I enjoy a drink, I will nearly always have only one because that is enough for me.

Gingerwarthog · 28/07/2025 18:13

Hi OP, you have just gone through a breakup and drank a bit too much. Not a big deal as a one off at all. You felt bad yesterday because you had ‘the fear’ - just part of a hangover.
Get a mate round, have a chat, feel better, arrange a spa day or whatever and move on.
If you find yourself doing it every week or wanting to then take stock again.

ZenGarden89 · 28/07/2025 18:10

I wouldn’t worry OP. Sounds like you’ve had a lot to deal with and alcohol can have a sedative effect so with the first glass you probably felt less on edge than you have been and then just lost the run of yourself. I’ve done it myself when the shit has hit the fan. Hope you’re hangover is better now!

May be worth going to counselling so you can talk through some of the issues you are dealing with in the wake of your separation. You’ve obviously been under a lot of strain so just be kind to yourself.

CosyNavyLeader · 28/07/2025 17:56

Some right patronising people on here.

OP. Please don't beat yourself up. You are not an alcoholic.

You had hangxiety and you wanted to vent. So you came to Mumsnet as you thought it was a safe space. But as you can now see it isn't.

You've had some AA worker breathing down your neck and other ridiculous comments.

Hope the wine was nice 😉 although I bet next time you'll stick to one bottle instead of two. That hangover will need a while to be forgotten.

Blottum · 28/07/2025 06:52

I bet you wake up today and feel much betyer
Op and over the anxiety?

just a thought… if you were drinking until 11pm, and you remember putting your children to bed but don’t remember putting yourself to bed… that would indicate you did most of your drinking alone, when they were in bed - so they wouldn’t have seen you especially drunk presumably because most drinking happened post their bedtime

Pinkwineandpinksofa · 27/07/2025 22:09

Sometimes these things happen… it’s not like you’re doing it every weekend. I hope you had fun and also hope the hangover subsides. Really don’t beat yourself up. A lot of people do far worse to their bodies. It was a one off. Hope your Saturday roast was tasty!

wonkyfruit · 27/07/2025 22:00

I could easily do this… and it’s why I stopped drinking altogether about 6 months ago. Now I’ve stopped I can see very clearly that I do have issues around alcohol (and have had since my early 20s - I’m now early 40s). I always used to say that I didn’t have any issues. I found “This Naked Mind” by Annie Grace and the I Am Sober app really helpful. All the best
