Men who refuse to watch the euro finals tomorrow as it’s women’s football - so what’s the point and refuse to watch, and say this in front of they wives and daughters are misogynistic pricks and their wives and daughters deserve so much better?

I dont think a man should have to watch dimensions football if they dont want to..its not sexist.

What's 'dimensions football'?

taxidriver · 27/07/2025 10:05

i must confess i dont tend to watch women's tennis, unless it is a name i recognise, a british person, although that makes me nervous.
this is the final, i will watch, and support england

Halfquarterbag · 27/07/2025 10:03

I watched a few minutes of embarrassing top level women’s football once.

It’s bound to improve. I’ll check in again sometime.

In the meantime, women should play football if they want and those who want to watch them should do so.

Helpmeplease2025 · 27/07/2025 10:01

Love football, hate women’s football. I won’t be watching it. Good luck to them, but I have no interest.

I don't watch any sport, tennis, football, snooker, motor racing, none of it. I am just not interested, and find it boring, but I don't rant on about it and complain, because I realise that other people like it. It really annoys me, that men are complaining and moaning on radio and social media, about women's football, because 'it isn't the same as mens' one man said that fans should 'have their own channel, because we don't want to watch it!'
It is just blatant misogyny, and they should just fuck off!
I don't know how any woman can live with a man like that.

Lots of women are too....

Mandoidi · 27/07/2025 09:52

I've watched almost all of this tournament and really enjoyed it. DH too. We bought the sticker book for DS4.
My mum and dad have watched all of England's games.
Today they are coming over and we are having a roast and then watching the game together.

We are enjoying it for what it is, not looking for reasons to compare it or put it down.

The grit and spirit the lionesses has shown has been truly impressive. Not to mention their composure when faced with delaying tactics.

There is a determination and togetherness about this team that I am enjoying very much. I think it is a display of sport (sport in all of the following meanings- the technical skill, ability, competitiveness and fairmindedness) that is well worth watching and celebrating.

And if you have pre-conceived ideas and have chosen not to watch this tournament then you wouldn't know that.

taxidriver · 27/07/2025 09:48

i am annoyed by women who dont watch it when they normally watch the men.
but you can't make people
you just have to encourage them,
it is all Sport

2021x · 27/07/2025 09:48

Not sure what everyone’s harping on about saying women’s football is not as exciting. I saw a few World Cup Games when it was in NZ and it was extremely enjoyable and they weren’t even in the knock out stages.

There was no difference watching it live compared to the men’s game apart from the crowd sizes.

Thricewomen · 27/07/2025 09:47

There will be lots of reasons why men don't want to watch women's football. Some may just be that they are sexist and don't want to watch women.

Others may have learnt to love the male game and not be so interested in the female game, which I am sure is different in some ways. I remember one of the Williams sisters saying she would never take up Andy Murray on his offer of a game, as he would win hands down. She said she regarded men and women's tennis as two separate sports as they were so different. I don't follow football but I imagine it is similar in the difference.

Also, I watched a programme on why people get so emotionally invested in their football team. Basically it fires mirror neurons so that fans actually feel they are part of the game and the team so become very emotionally and personally invested in the outcome. Some men may not get those mirror neurons firing as they are not able to imagine themselves as part of the female team. This is not something they will have a conscious awareness or control over.

I prefer listening to female singers and watching female dancers. I probably have similar unconscious reasons why I prefer this to their male counterparts.

We are sports fans and will watch it. But my DH will piss me off by laughing at it a fair amount. He was a nightmare during that penalty shoot out, which i have to admit was pretty dire.

Granted, the shoot out wasn’t great, but English men’s football is littered with players not able to dispel the nerves enough to take a crucial penalty, although the 90’s seemed to be an especially bad time. It’s not a male/female issue, it’s a human issue.

taxidriver · 27/07/2025 09:44

10 million people watched the semi final
which is amazing

They’ll happily watch make football. It was mostly the comment about it being pointless watching but as it’s women’s football in front of hud daughter I thought was sad.

It us depressing
But he’s probably just as bad a role model for his daughter (and son if he has) whilst watching the male game.
Even H can be shocked by some men watching football.

I don’t think I really needed to but when I was pregnant with our first I laid down the ground rules of football watching in our house, you will change your football chants to kid friendly, you will not swear or call players/referees names, you will lose gracefully and win gracefully, if you feel the desire to act like the missing link you will do it elsewhere.

If they refuse to watch it because it’s ‘women’s football’, they are being idiots.
If they refuse to watch it because the quality of the football is awful, I’d have to agree with them.

queenMab99 · 27/07/2025 09:39

Womens football was very popular in the 1920s, it drew huge crowds in the northwest of England, which is why the women were banned from the FA, as it distracted from the men's game. Google Dick Kerrs ladies football team.

What if the man is not involved in any football at all? And it doesn't say much for the women if they are in relationships with these men you so intelligently and eloquently put

I’m male, I’ve watched quite a few of the matches, actually enjoy the fact that the women spend far less time on the floor rolling around in agony after an innocuous touch, the men could learn something from them. Quality of play is pretty impressive too, so yes, men who won’t watch simply because it’s women’s football are sexist

Why bother supporting England in the men’s World Cup when you should be supporting Germany or Spain or Brazil as they are demonstrably better teams?

Why even watch football or any sports at all when you can save time and just spend 10 seconds watching the men’s 100m final at the olympics every 4 years if you only care about watching the elitist of the elite athletes.

England are ahead of Germany and Brazil in the current men's FIFA rankings. We have quite a good men's team these days.

The quality of the games is still high though in international men's football from the best teams even if the team you support doesn't win. It is also improving significantly in women's football but will never be likely to be the same as the men's for obvious reasons.

There's also a difference between supporting a team and enjoying watching a game in any event. There are plenty of matches that I have watched with my husband where he has been supporting the team but has been miserable and moaning about the quality.

frozendaisy · 27/07/2025 09:29

Some men can’t even cope with a female commentator on football so a field full of women is clearly beyond them.

It will take time, there are many girls who play football now, many dads invested in their daughters as well as their sons playing at the weekend.

I was talking to H, who is a football fan of one team, takes son to play and train all year round, about the Lionesses and the difference in viewing and atmosphere.

Female football is a different game, partly through lack of investment and opportunity historically and physically. Male professional players, you don’t really get the feel of it just on tv, play the game at a ridiculous speed and in H’s words “once in a generation you get a player or two who can do ridiculous things with a ball Ronaldo and Messi, more Messi he has done stuff with a ball that I still can’t figure out how he did it”

Saying this, we discussed that is not to dismiss the female game, it is still competitive football because both teams are female with similar physical and technical abilities. But it is a different game. And when I pointed out the inevitable online trolling he said yeah but imagine the stick the men’s team would’ve got if they took 13 penalties to win, which was a fair point, if you play football professionally apparently anonymous wankers, some of who can’t run for a bus, feel like they can type what they like regardless of how nasty and feel like “they’ve done their bit”

Lionesses could run circles around almost every man who dismisses them out of sexism, there are many mums and daughters who are looking forward to cheering on our female football team, having an team who are inspiring to young girls to exercise, watch competition and have healthy bodies that aren’t stick thin or pumped of plastic is a good thing.

And the men who are sexist, let them slump in a corner, some women are sexist as well, let them sulk and troll on their keyboards, they become more irrelevant with each passing year.

Some men are sexist, racist, homophobic knobends. We meet them out and about and they are terribly dull. They don’t realise how boring and dumb they are, they think their insights into the beautiful game are worthy and it’s only not being in the right place at the right time that they weren’t either on the pitch for England and/or in the Manager’s job.

We have also seen some dads behave appallingly at grassroots football with their sons, so desperate are they for the spawn of their mighty balls to be the next Messi with “that’s my pension right there” comments. or actual fighting with teenage referees, shouting at their sons, they are cruel to their boys.

Football can bring out the best and worse in people.

Bunch of grunts sulking because it’s a female final, yeah standard, who cares, we’re going to watch it later with our boys, it’s still football (and our youngster will watch any old kickabout and the final will be much better than that)

This thread is quite depressing tbh, obviously everyone can be interested in whatever they want but it feels like there’s no point even playing football because the women’s game will never be as good as the men’s.

The sexism around women’s football is shocking, I play Sunday league and men often make pervy comments about the changing rooms or say that women footballers will never be able to beat men 🙄.

I took DP and the DDs to see a match during the 2018 World Cup and hardly anyone even knew there was a World Cup even though we lived in the host country. Can you imagine living in the host country of the men’s World Cup and not knowing about it? I think things have moved on quite a bit since then, but there’s still a way to go.

Excellent post.

They are different games tbh, women were banned from even playing football until relatively recently so of course the game won't have evolved as much as the mens.

When I was growing up (am 48 now) I played football with my brothers team until I was 11 and then there was nothing, no local teams, no girls set up and you certainly couldn't make a career out of it. I am just happy our daughters have so many opportunities to play the game now.

Fearfulsaints · 27/07/2025 09:20

Im not really into football so have no idea if women's football is as interesting to watch as men.

But i think if you are big in to mens football and have a daughter who wants to watch the womens final, then sitting and watching with her isn't a big ask. I watched 'in the night garden' and all sorts of shit for my child. Pointedly not watching something and saying its pointless seems a bit harsh.

I am sure wives are generally big enough and ugly enough to manage to watch it alone and think stuff thier partners enjoy is pointless too..

Nowadaysmind · 27/07/2025 09:18

A majority of men in England are all but homosexual in that they are only loyal, respectful and inclusive towards their own sex.

Go to your local pub, sports club or similar organisation and chat with the lads over a period of time and you'll feel the contempt they have for women.

Goldenbear · 27/07/2025 09:14

I agree. My DH loves football and has been trying to get my teen DD to watch the matches, she isn't interested in any sport though so it's a no. Starter. In contrast, my late teen DS went to watch the semi finals in the pub with his friends last week!
