To think The West is morally bankrupt

America democratically elects an adjudicate rapist who sympathises with racists, hates women and will do anything to hang onto power. The UK and it's lickspitrlw leader fawn over Trump and says that Israel has rhe right to cut off food and water to Gaza. Then wairs a year watching children die before saying it is intolerable. Except he is tolerating it.We all are.
The West is pumping out carbon at a vast rate and will no doubt reject the flood of refugees that this will cause.
The West takes more than it's fair share of the world's wealth. Much of the West is based on colonial exploration and murder of the global south.
I used to think we were the good guys.
We are not. We are one of the worst things ever to happen to the planet and it's inhabitants.

I don't disagree with your points that the West is guilty of many things, but honestly I don't think it's as easy as looking at the west and pinpointing the blame firmly in one place.
There are issues everywhere, somewhat varying but no less important.
There are also seemingly no "good guys".

Yellowbirdcage · 28/07/2025 05:38

It’s like arguing with a teenager. Full of generalised hatred and righteousness and certainty that they have the answers to the world’s problems.
OP if you were in charge of ‘the West’ what would you actually DO? As your first actions? As there is no ‘West’ let’s say you’re the despotic leader of the UK and can go and kill off the people who disagree with you. I’d love to hear your plans so we can actually lead you step by step though the consequences and try and get you to realise you’re no better than anyone else.
Pol Pot thought he knew how to make things morally correct.

SummerEve · 27/07/2025 00:23

Yes, we have an awful lot to answer for and we aren’t half as clever, aspirational or superior as we think we are.

Who is ‘we’?

Who do you think actually believes what you said?

Politicians like Farage, Rees-Mogg, certainly Boris Johnson and his crew when they were in, but do you think most normal people share this sentiment? It’s been drummed into us and certainly our children’s generation that we’re basically just above Russia, China, Syria and Iran in the morally shit and useless stakes.

I can’t think of anyone who’s openly proud to be British anymore bc it’s like admitting you’re a racist. The one time it’s tolerated is if we win at a sporting event, but that’s short-lived.

CapeGooseberry · 28/07/2025 01:23

I think the UK is pretty great actually.

Well if we a talking support for unconvicted sex offendes, let’s consider the marrying of nine year olds….

So me not agreeing with 75 million adjudicated rapist supporters is equivalent to the abovementioned 75 million supporting the mass miurder of Gazan children?

Are you absolutely sure you have the authority to claim to know those 75 million support that?

You missed my point completely.

Elrae · 27/07/2025 23:23

EmmaSheen · 27/07/2025 23:13

You weren't criticizing them you made it clear you have no intention of trying to understand why they voted the way they did. You were condemning them on making a decision you don't like and writing them off as "other"

That sort of thinking and singling out 75 million people that don't think "correctly" according to you is the same thinking that allows some of the atrocities you've mentioned to happen.

It must frustrate you terribly that you know almost nothing about me

Er no? I just shared my POV. Why post on Mumsnet if you don't want other people's opinions?

EmmaSheen · 27/07/2025 23:13

Elrae · 27/07/2025 23:03

So let me get this straight, you think a prerequisite for mentioning genocide is not criticising the 75 million who voted for the adjudicated rapist?

WhereIsMyJumper · 27/07/2025 23:11

P.s. I don’t believe Gambia has ever colonised anywhere but it’s very illegal to be gay there

WhereIsMyJumper · 27/07/2025 23:10

If you take a look at the global peace index, you’ll see that most of the countries at the top are western. It’s the UK and US you have an issue with.

Elrae · 27/07/2025 23:09

Thatsalineallright · 27/07/2025 23:04

Sure, 'the West' has a bloody history and a power-hungry present. I can't think of a single country that doesn't have a background of war and terror and bloodshed. There's no way I'd want to live in most of the world as a woman - 'the West' is the best of a bad lot imo. If you don't like it, perhaps go live elsewhere?

I think the OP is planning to move to the UAE, more moral there I suppose.

You have no right to discuss genocide while simultaneously condemning 75 million people.

Have you paid reparations to the people working in near slavery to assemble the device you are posting on?

I'm patiently waiting for you to respond to how you would effect the change you desire.

Britain is a colonising nation whose history and accumulated wealth involves invading other countries, stealing their resources and murdering their people. As well as setting up colonial administrations such as in the Raj in India. One of these colonised nations was a country whose western tip almost touched the very east of what we called Asia. The religiously persecuted Brethren who first arrived in this nation, and other colonisers, made it into a white Protestant setyller nation and in the process murdered many of the people who lived there for centuries. They then imported people from West Africa to be slaves working on cotton plantations. These people, still murdered today by the white selttler police, are today known as African Americans. Another white racist group, the German Nazis, decided to throw their lot in with a psychopath who thought Jews were the root of all their problems. He murdered millions of them, and miliions of those who fought against him. This legitimised the post war colonisation of Palestine by the co-religionists of the people who had been murdered. The co religionists, unwanted by Europe, created a new nation to assuage European guilt, called Israel. This new nation then threw Palestinian people off their land and became settler colonisers themselves. Supported by colonial countries like the UK and the US, and many European countries. The settler colonial guilt derived nation mistreated the indigenous inhabitants and then, almost 2 years ago, they were delighted that a terrorist group gave them a pretext for genocide through murderous acts. They murdered and starved thousands of children. Whenever anyone said "no" they cried "antisemitism"
Alternatively, just carry on drinking your fucking Merlot, listening to your bullshit BBC, believing the crap you have been fed,

How do you NOT know that BBC antisemitic & very pro-Palestine? I agree BBC is bullshit … but u are mistaken about the type of shit they are broadcasting.
Further …
You have written your own short & tidy version of history of “the West” … good for you. Enjoy.

No nerve hit. And yes, thank you I slept well.

And am about to again. It's almost 11pm and I have work tomorrow. Which is something I'm allowed to do in this awful western culture.

Again, how convenient for you, You cannot take any criticism at all of the West, like so many people on here. Just because people agree with you doesnt mean you are right.

Right, so you’re off to UAE then.

You are spouting things as if they were facts, and they aren't.

You are just coming across as a left wing wanker that has a bunch of talking points. Calling anyone that disagrees as middle class. As if that's an insult.

Well, I have clearly hit a nerve. Hope you slept well, by the way

I'm sorry I can't answer you on your schedule. So sad, never mind.

I will break it down into a few, easily digestible, points.

The Christian West that we live in is the most enlightened society that has ever lived. The one where individuals have the most free will. The one where you can have a job and live a life without being the property of a man.

The Muslim world (if you'd watched the video I linked to, it would have given you a lot of good historical context if you can't be bothered to do research) has been on a genocidal path since Mohammad died in the 600s. Europe has been a battleground between Christianity and Islam for the last 1500 years.

I personally would prefer to live in a Christian nation than one that thinks that I am half the worth of a man.

If you think that the west is morally bankrupt, maybe go try living in one of those non-western countries and see how you get on.

Maybe @Elrae is male so that's why they hate the West so much? What will women having rights and all?
