To think The West is morally bankrupt

America democratically elects an adjudicate rapist who sympathises with racists, hates women and will do anything to hang onto power. The UK and it's lickspitrlw leader fawn over Trump and says that Israel has rhe right to cut off food and water to Gaza. Then wairs a year watching children die before saying it is intolerable. Except he is tolerating it.We all are.
The West is pumping out carbon at a vast rate and will no doubt reject the flood of refugees that this will cause.
The West takes more than it's fair share of the world's wealth. Much of the West is based on colonial exploration and murder of the global south.
I used to think we were the good guys.
We are not. We are one of the worst things ever to happen to the planet and it's inhabitants.

had a look at what’s going on in Asia recently? Middle East? It’s not just the west

You can’t “just move”. You have to meet entry criteria. Have certain skills or qualifications. Be a certain age. Have family links, and a certain amount of money in the bank. Have a job offer.

No you don't need all these things all the time. People manage to move countries. They look at ways to emigrate, with what they already have or work to achieve what they need. Its not some impossible dream. There are a lot of countries outside the evil West.

Ha! You think one comment means I relentlessly push an agenda? Just more ridiculous dramatics.
I just think rather than constant self flagulation for crimes some men committed in the past, or to shoulder blame for how Americans vote, we need to show a little more gratitude for how lucky we are to live in a country where women are free and equal, where we have free speech (mostly), inclusion and tollerance, where we have free health care and education, clean water etc. Instead all I see is spoilt brats with their iphones and new build houses, whining about how bad white people/the west/Europe etc is whilst enjoying the freedoms it gives them.

Put your money where your mouth is, if it's so terrible, move.

Blimey, you don’t understand much do you? I would love to move and am trying very hard to do so, but it’s nowhere near the simple process you insist it is.

Its this sort of lazy response that meant valid concerns about levels of immigration, concentrated in some communities, and the impact it had, were ignored as 'agenda pushing'.

Alternatively, it’s this sort of lazy generalization of those that seek to come here that means we can’t have a reasonable conversation about the topic.

Yabu if you ever thought the world was as binary as "West = good guys, East = bad guys". There's a great deal right, and wrong, about both - if you expand your knowledge of East v West beyond the US and UK. Whole swathes of Europe, for example, plenty of Nordic states seem to do ok with their responsibilities to both their own citizens and treatment of other nations. If you're looking at pollution, then you've missed out China. I couldn't agree more with your assessment of the US President, but I don't think Afghanistan or Iran are great bastions of human rights, either.

If you're looking for one common denominator, then you'd well to look at who exactly is running all these countries - East and West. How many are women?

Margaret Thatcher was a woman. Imelda Marcos was a woman. I think it’s time people stopped pretending women in power would automatically be hugely different from, or better than, men in power. It takes a certain personality-type to be attracted to positions of power, after all.

People move all the time. People move to this country, people emigrate to other countries. This is quite common.

People may need to put in the work they need to achieve this, but that is surely worth it to move from an evil 'oppressor' country to a paradise 'victim' country, full of human rights, a highly regulated police force and rule of law.

Don’t you ever get tired of the relentless agenda pushing about small boats? It’s so predictable and lazy.

Again, people can’t “just move”. What don’t you understand about this?

They can change their lifestyles to be more in accordance with the non-morally bankrupt life they would like to lead. The problem, it would seem, though, is that most voters want to maintain a reasonable standard of living now, not pay more tax, and not have massive change inflicted on them, but people nevertheless expect their “leaders” to fix everything for them so that they can continue living their lives as they do, or improve the quality of their lives, with a clear conscience (whilst not admitting to themselves that their leaders have their hands tied behind their backs, because democracy won’t let them make any big decisions that could actually lower everyone’s quality of life in order to be more “fair” to the entire world).

Course you can, if you hate it here so much, the obvious answer is to move. Maybe get on a little boat and turn up on the shore of your chosen paradise, I'm sure they'll be very welcoming, far more than the West are...

Well we’re already on the way to self hatred and destruction. Should we all just kill ourselves now then to purge the world of evil?

I'm so, so sick of this self flagulation. Why don't you just move to the east then? What paradise do you fancy, Iran, North Koera, Afghanistan? Send a postcard won't you.

SkyBlueCloudyLakes · 27/07/2025 10:25

Apologies for going little bit off piste here. I find it always very frustrating when there is a discussion about carbon emissions and the first thing someone says is "What about China"

The West has moved huge amounts of it's manufacturing to cheaper countries, China being one of the main ones. If you check the items, clothing in your own home the chances are you will find writing "Made in China".

If all the manufacturing of goods required by West would be moved back to West, the carbon emissions would skyrocket. Coal or something similar would be needed since it would be impossible to keep up with the energy demand for the production of these items/materials/components. There just wouldn't be enough green energy for the demand, not enough ig. solar panels and wind turbines. By the way huge majority of them are Made you guessed it In China.

Just saying.

Neemie · 27/07/2025 10:21

I wouldn’t feel too guilty about it. Those feelings will become a luxury that we can’t really afford. I think the West is in decline and we will be at the mercy of other nation’s moral bankruptcy.

I think your stance is a little patronising and complacent.

FriggingInsomnia · 27/07/2025 03:58

If you hate the West so much, you can always go and live somewhere which is not the West - Eastern Europe, Russia, Africa, Asia, the ME?

I doubt we need you here and you are free to go.

Toodle pip.

Newsflash …you can’t just up sticks and move somewhere. It’s a bit more complicated than that.

What's the problem? If "The West" isn't somewhere you like being, you're more than welcome to live elsewhere. What is stopping you?

Yes I think the West is morally bankrupt but not for the reasons the op mentioned. I am extremely proud of the amazing architecture, law system, inventions, great leaders and other aspects of history. But these were all grounded and inspired by Christianity and our leaders (and many/most people) are now immoral, put themselves first, are entitled and are ignorant of our history and the legacy and tenets of Christianity. I feel now like we are a load of ignorant barbarians living in the ruins of a great civilisation.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the violence of the Reformation in Europe, Charlemagne, the Reconquista and the Crusades in that case?

Thricewomen · 27/07/2025 09:56

Given the quality of arguments of this post and its supporters, I'd say the West is intellectually bankrupt. Or at least those who follow these simplistic, unbalanced, ideologically led, oppressor/victim, self-flagellating ideas.

The West has clearly given an awful lot that is good to the world. Other parts of the world have clearly had (and have) cultures that and legal systems that are appalling and have little notion of the human rights that most of us in the West (and certainly the poster and her supporters) would support.

PixiePuffBall · 27/07/2025 09:55

Nonsense. Let's take it point by point.

America democratically elects an adjudicate rapist who sympathises with racists, hates women and will do anything to hang onto power.

Democracy will mean people being elected into office who you personally strongly dislike and disagree with. It's up to your side of the argument to come up with a better sales pitch. If no one is buying what you're selling, that's a you problem.

The UK and it's lickspitrlw leader fawn over Trump and says that Israel has rhe right to cut off food and water to Gaza. Then wairs a year watching children die before saying it is intolerable. Except he is tolerating it.We all are.

The UK's relationship with the US is infinitely more important than caving to backwater terrorist regimes who hate us and treat women and children like cattle. It's utterly horrendous, but war just does include civilian casualties, particularly when they are used by the target organization (Hamas) as human shields and bargaining chips. Was The Blitz "a genocide" because it included female and infant casualties? Of course not. Don't be ridiculous.

The West is pumping out carbon at a vast rate and will no doubt reject the flood of refugees that this will cause.

Please spend a few moments looking up how much pollution comes from India and China. Yes this is a trade relationship, but the manufacturing economies are huge beneficiaries of this too. No western country comes anywhere close to producing the same amount of pollution. Why does "The West" (What do you actually mean by this specifically by the way? Which countries? They're all very distinct) have a particular responsibility to accept refugees than any nation?

The West takes more than it's fair share of the world's wealth. Much of the West is based on colonial exploration and murder of the global south.

Arrogant and delusional. India, China, South Korea, Japan. All are wealthy nations that have improved quality of life for citizens in extraordinary ways that are the envy of the West in many ways. Please visit some of these countries and you'll see for yourself. Colonial history is more complex than "everyone was murdered".

I used to think we were the good guys.
We are not. We are one of the worst things ever to happen to the planet and it's inhabitants.

Sweeping, emotional statements like this reveal intellectual incuriosity and a lack of critical thinking. The world is more complicated than this and filled with nuance.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 27/07/2025 09:45

The problem is, very simply, men.

Or, to put it in more words, that we have created societies, cultures and religions that place men in unshakable positions of power and worship. This world would be significantly better in every respect if more women had more power and influence and world over. It’s not a question of West v East.

This 💯

The OP does seem irrationally angry that the majority are disagreeing.

GulliaumeDuc · 27/07/2025 09:28

OK. So is it your position that most things we value weren’t invented by a man?

Well, when women have been either banned from education and work or else sidelined in favour of someone without a uterus it’s hard to judge.

Is it your position that women, had they had all the advantages of a man, would not have been capable of equalling the inventions of men?
