If you are single with no kids, who do you go on holiday with?

Just that, really. I’m at a stage in my life where I feel like I have nobody my own age to go on holiday with. Vast majority of friends are in relationships, some with kids, the one or two who aren’t aren’t close enough really for me to suggest going away together. I know I can go on holiday on my own and I have done many times in the past, it’s just gotten old tbh. Just curious how other single people handle it.

YABU - I have friends (or others) to go on holiday with
YANBU - I have no one my own age to go on holiday with

I always got away minus children with my bestie regularly over the years.
She went on Norwegian cruise and Antarctica solo.
I piss off to my favourite place in Mallorca once a year now children are adults.
Absolute heaven.

I've done a few holidays with friends (who are in relationships but happy to spend time apart. TBH I think one reason they like it is they can leave the organising to me. It's usually them in their relationships so they enjoy the break in both senses).

It depends on the holiday though. Generally and gradually I prefer to go alone. I prefer company if I'm travelling independently somewhere the language is tricky.

Oh gawd, I’m in awe of all the ladies able to travel alone. I have zero sense of direction and the anxiety of getting lost overwhelms any excitement a holiday might bring. I have the financial means but no one to go with! 😩

I’m dyspraxic and get lost everywhere. Getting lost on holiday alone is no drama. You just wander around a bit until you can work it out. Google maps is a life saver.

I also have zero sense of direction. But I have a phone with Google maps and international data roaming! If I can do it, anyone can!

OP I am about to be living on my own as a single parent whose child is off to uni soon (hopefully!). I’m planning on doing some solo traveller group holidays.

When I first split up from my ex I really needed a break so left my son with my mum for a week and went to Greece on my own with Friendship Travel (a solo traveller type trip), it was amazing. I’ve done some single parent group holidays which have also been good.

So am now looking at solo traveller holidays with Intrepid, Explore, G Adventures, Flash Pack etc. And I believe Friendship Travel still exists!

can recommend g adventures. did a tour a few years ago and everyone in the group happened to be a female solo traveller, except two women who had come together as friends. And the tour guide who was male. big mix of ages, nationalities and backgrounds, and excellent itinerary! i’d love to do it again but i have loads of kids now…

You really don't need that much of a sense of direction in the age of Google Maps. Life is short. Just go.

I was single for a decade and love travelling.

I did a combination of solo travel and group tours based around my interests (which included skiing and summer trips with companies like Oak Hall/Exodus/Intrepid, and group tours around hobbies, eg birdwatching trips, art retreats, golf, battlefield tour).

I would also combine solo travel with visiting friends I had living in those countries.

Had a great time.

Also don't assume people wouldn't go on holiday with you if they are married or have kids. I have a family and would still happily go away with a single friend for a long weekend.

Yes, @Purpleturtle45 is right. I had my first trip with friends just before the pandemic (as my children were getting older) and have carried on since.

Zempy · 26/07/2025 20:49

I am single and travel regularly with mates (all married) or with my adult DC or alone.

It’s true. My sister used to go on holidays alone as her DP was not interested in stuff she was interested in plus he needed annual leave to visit his parents. She went with her old friend once who was single but it was a complete disaster so she continued solo.

DH goes on group holidays each year based on a hobby. They were all strangers initially but he’s made friends with some and there are some who go every year.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 26/07/2025 20:44

I’m married with kids…. but I choose to go on holiday with my dad every year and leave my family at home.

We get on well, enjoy the same things and it’s nice to be looked after instead of being the one looking after!

JoanOgden · 26/07/2025 20:42

My best friend, other friends, married friends and their kids, group holidays. I just counted up and I'm going on holiday with 17 different people this year, in various combinations.

zibazee · 26/07/2025 20:40

My single childless friend joins me, my Dh and dc this year in our holiday abroad. She also goes travelling with her other friends whose dc are adults. She travels more than I and always with friends or visits friends.

Helpwithdivorce · 26/07/2025 20:38

Friends, parents, visit friends who live abroad or go alone

KateMiskin · 26/07/2025 20:37

I am married with kids and often travel solo! I love it. More women should. I love pleasing only myself

Yes, ditto.

LoftyRoseRobin · 26/07/2025 20:31

Yeah, same boat honestly. Most of my close friends are settled down now, either in relationships or busy with kids, and the few who aren’t just aren’t the type I’d travel with. I’ve done solo trips before — they’re great in some ways, but after a while it does get a bit repetitive or lonely. Sometimes I just skip holidays altogether or try to line something up with family. Curious too how others deal with it, especially as time goes on.

Plantladylover · 26/07/2025 20:13

Good recommendation from a pp re cruises. Am not a huge fan but the ones I've been on (NCL) have many solo travellers and an extensive programme for meet ups etc

CarolNoE · 26/07/2025 20:13

Usually solo, some small group tours like G Adventures and off to Japan soon to join an Inside Japan tour based on recommendations here! With time alone before and after to make the cost, distance and jet lag worthwhile. Hoping to do Krakow mini break next May, seen a nice guesthouse/hostel on booking.com. Some cruises with my mum, did one alone but 5k+ passengers on P&O Iona...I enjoy my own company and always called "brave to go alone" 🙄 i did feel a bit lonely on that one tbh, seemed like I never saw the same person twice. Making most of my mum as single cost in a cain is £++++. Find a lot of tips on here and FB Solo in Style women over 50 (or similiar). Read about Angloville where you help out as a host on a TEFL language course in Poland, no teaching but socialising on an evening to keep conversations in English. All free for the week. 8 did a year round the world ticket and did WWOOF to eke (spelling) out my money and did 2hrs cleaning in a hostel in return for a free bed but that was more backpacking than a week holiday. Good luck with your travels, just a different mindset needed if you don't want to see the same 4 walls 52 weeks of the year.

whitewineandsun · 26/07/2025 20:12

I go alone these days. I sometimes meet up with friends, but I travel and stay on my own.

EmpressaurusKitty · 26/07/2025 20:11

I go on city weekend breaks with my sister but my longer holidays are always just me.

I’ll meet up with friends if I happen to be anywhere near some, but I know myself too well to think I could stand anyone’s company for more than three days, however much I like / love them.
