To think there are very few nice people here on Mumsnet anymore?

I’ve been on here for a while and recently, it feels like the vibe has really changed. So many posts seem to get turned into arguments or people are just downright rude to others. I get that Mumsnet is a place for strong opinions but it’s starting to feel like kindness and constructive conversation are in short supply. Maybe it’s just me but are there actually still genuinely nice people around here or has it become more of a space for venting and putting others down?

AIBU to long for a bit more positivity and civility around here?

Came off X as it's so horrible, thought i might give MN a go,but have to say I've been a bit shocked by the nastiness and bad language, so I'm not enjoying it tbh. I like a strong discussion but far too many MNetters do exactly what men do on X, instead of discussing they just make nasty personal comments and swear. Really depressing.

I think it depends where you look, @Bertiebiscuit. AIBU does tend to be direct and robust, but if you go and look at other areas of MN, you’ll find people offering support, advice and encouragement to parents of children with special education needs or disabilities, or to mums who are struggling with breastfeeding, or MNers suffering poor mental health.

You’ll find Woolly Hugs - a charitable endeavour that knits blankets for MNers who have lost a child or a spouse, and that also knits blankets for children in hospital, women undergoing cancer treatment, blankets to wrap premature babies who don’t make it (because they need something smaller than most baby blankets, and hospitals often don’t have anything suitable) - we even have regular online craft sales which raise money for different charities.

Or there’s MN Classics - full of some very funny threads from the MN archives.

Why are you logging into and using a forum you don't enjoy?

You woke up an 8 month old thread to criticise people.

And many of us like thr robust nature of this place and the language. I'd take the word 'fuck' over the twee and creepy 'baby dancing' some women use. Envy

I think it's the height of bad manners to step into a place with decades of history, look around, and start rearranging the furniture. It can be not for you. That doesn't mean it has to change.

DustyMaiden · 25/03/2026 18:08

Dinosaurs were roaming the earth when I joined. Since the end of year one people have been saying it’s not like it used to be.

I found the ‘here we go’ comment unnecessarily snide too. Of course it’s not a huge deal, and it’s hardly the nastiest thing anyone has said here! But there was an unpleasant edge to your dig, and I thought why bother saying that? Maybe the OP hadn’t seen a thread like this before. Comments like that contribute to the tone of a forum. I am sure you don’t care, but I do agree with the other poster.

Agree. It was snide. And typical of many pointless digs people make.

Everyone is entitled to post and they may not know a thread has been started before. We are allowed to have the same topics discussed again!

FreyasCats · 25/03/2026 18:03

I don't think it's just on Mumsnet. The department I work in is horrible and everywhere I look people in general are pretty awful. I just think most humans have become dreadful.

MissDiag · 25/03/2026 18:00

When people are being unpleasant, it is really important to me to maintain my dignity and decency and not join in, even if tempted. If I have ever posted something slightly unpleasant, it does not make me feel good. All I can do is keep the standards I have and not be dragged down.

it is the Internet and people feel they can be as mean as they want. In real life luckily, I am surrounded by decent people.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/03/2026 17:46

There's some nastiness especially on AIBU, but there are also people who can't seem to cope with anybody disagreeing with them at all. There's a thread at the moment about the 2019 Zara dress and when a couple of people have said something negative about it, some others have reacted childishly. Don't post on a public forum unless you can't take disagreement.

Netcurtainnelly · 25/03/2026 17:38

Why do people keep moaning?
It is what it is, you don't really know people anyway as it's all anon.
Why come on
Meet some real life friends or don't get so invested.

NormasArse · 25/03/2026 17:33

Some people on here are lovely.

I do think the first few answers set the tone for some threads though. If it starts in a nasty way, people take it as a green flag to go all out.

Bertiebiscuit · 25/03/2026 17:31

RedRiverShore5 · 26/07/2025 15:16

I don't tend to post on the more general chat, AIBU threads now and just stick to the ones like telly or music threads as it's the general ones that are quite nasty

Thanks for the demonstration 😃

They were making a fair point

How was that a demonstration?

Chinsupmeloves · 26/07/2025 22:28

Unfortunately, as in society, there are always some who just want to antagonise and be unpleasant.

We can see those comments, someone itching for a fight, so just pass on by and not give them the satisfaction 😉

So pathetic and very sad 😔

MuckFusk · 26/07/2025 21:28

There are definitely a lot of people who are just generally nasty and nit-picky, but sometimes the problem is that people are too sensitive to criticism, no matter how constructive, and unreasonably claim they are being bullied. I judge each case individually and I don't let the nasties get to me. I usually just stop responding to them. Some of them are quite spectacularly horrible, but I find it entertaining to watch as they often get a good hiding from other posters.

That’s amazing! I feel invisible on here so can’t even imagine how RL friendships would happen 😄

Well, I’ve known most of them for 7 years or longer - though I met a couple of fellow-cat lovers just a week or two ago.

It came from being on boards focused round shared interests & gradually getting to know each other.

ZeroPointOne · 26/07/2025 21:16

I think it reflects how stressful life has become in a boiling frog way.
Things are difficult for a lot of people, and stressed people, being pushed to their limits, snap easily, especially when anonymous on the internet.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 26/07/2025 21:13

Yes I agree. I find myself often agreeing with the op while the majority of people responding (unjustly) lay into them.

the80sweregreat · 26/07/2025 21:11

I always try to be nice , but aibu can be a bit abrasive and people quick to judge.
Some threads can turn into a bit of a ‘ bun fight ‘ too.

GanninHyem · 26/07/2025 20:13

Well, let's face it, well rounded, happy, sociable people aren't going to spending their time scrolling night after night are they? SM attracts the people with the time on their hands, usually because they've got little else going on on their life and the bitterness and rot set it.

I see it in myself. When I'm in a good mood and have shit going on I'm not here. When my MH is low and I'm lonely I am and generally a snarky bitch.

Edited

There is definitely something in this, I think.

I’ve made quite a few RL friends via MN. Although it probably doesn’t happen as often as in the early days.

SodOffbacktoaibu · 26/07/2025 19:55

@vodkaredbullgirl nope. Not me. I was asking because you find it "😆" that people find people are horrible for some reason?

PluckyChancer · 26/07/2025 19:35

It’s always been like this on AIBU threads but plenty of other topics have lovely supportive posters.

So YABU. 😂

SodOffbacktoaibu · 26/07/2025 18:46

Are you one of the mean girls?

I've been here 15 years. I agree with op.

Is it generational?

How old are you if you agree with @NaiceSnail ?

I'm fifty one.

If you have given a snarky reply, how old are you?

No but looks like you could be one 😆.
