Malnourished starving children in Gaza

babyproblems · 26/07/2025 06:42

The photos that appeared this morning on my news updates of mothers holding their children, dying of starvation and extreme malnutrition in Gaza have absolutely broken my heart. I am not particularly news focused, of course I’ve followed it all but this morning it has stopped me in my tracks and took my breath away. As a mother of a 3yo DS who is sleeping peacefully in his bedroom, whilst we have a fridge full of food downstairs and a life of peace, I feel so sorry that those poor mothers and children are living this hell so undeserved and also so so lucky we have the peace we do…
I don’t really know what the point of my post is; I suppose I’m screaming When Will This End inside and want to tell everyone to not take the freedom and peace we have for granted; use your right to vote and use your privilege to make informed choices that steer the world away from conflict towards peace…

Sending a handhold to all the mothers’ whose lives are not being lived in peace and whose children are suffering 🕊️💔

You asked “What evidence have you got of Israel indoctrinating very young kids in schools to hate Palestinians?” to the other poster, I was seeking to answer only that question by reminding you of some concerning evidence that did emerge.

It was published on 21 November 2023, so yes fairly soon after October 7th
It was negatively received outside Israel.
The children are from communities in the Gaza envelope that were not attacked on the 7th but subsequently evacuated.

It is evidence that some Israeli children may be being brainwashed into hating Palestinians by singing (an excerpt from the song follows)

“In another year there will be nothing there

And we will return safely to our home within a year

We will annihilate them all

And then return to plowing our fields”

I agree the post was an overly sweeping generalisation, but this video is either an isolated incident or the tip of an iceberg. Without any inspection of the schools, we can never know.

Edited

The Gaza envelope is a small area. Children evacuated from that area would have already been living under rocket fire for years before October 7th, whether directly impacted on October 7th or not. The chance of them knowing others in nearby kibbutzim who were affected is correspondingly high too.

I do believe it is an isolated incident, given the majority in Israel condemned the video and it was withdrawn.

I think it is possible to pull evidence and examples of radicalised and extreme language on both sides - but my point is why is this being generalised to dehumanise Israelis? Why are the voices for peace not being amplified?

From first hand experience (although I guess you could argue you can't extrapolate/ generalise from that either, just like you can't generalise from the extremist examples provided), I've personally certainly never seen or heard any of my children coming home from school here in Israel saying anything about being taught to hate or kill Palestinians and would be truly horrified if they did. I can only speak for my children's schools (they went to 4 separate institutions last year), but I don't believe they are out of the norm. They are state schools.

Please forgive me for not responding to your comments Lucky - I am just dipping in and out at the moment, and haven't time to properly look at the research paper you linked.

Yet again my post has been deleted. I think someone reports all of my posts and hopes for the best . The just of my post was that historians and scholars will study this genocide in future years . The essay question will be something like this “ Discuss the political climate in which a genocide carried out against the Palestinian people was allowed to go largely unchecked “.

Couldn't agree more 😢

I found it chilling how she literally hopes her son will kill children. Not even a thought for the psychological damage that does to a person. What kind of mother raises a son expecting him to be able to kill children?

Edit- important to note that she is not representative of most Israeli mothers. Hopefully her constituents will cause her to lose her seat the next election.

This is why I am so, so worried about the mood in the UK right now. Historically, viewing our fellow human beings as other or different has led to nothing but horror.

Just, despair.

How do these people live with themselves? Do they really believe that is what their God represents?

Once you have dehumanized a group of people, you can justify to yourself any atrocities committed against them. It's been the same with every genocide.

In her speech at the Knesset, Israeli lawmaker Michal Waldiger, who defended the killing of Palestinian children in Gaza, stated

”There are no innocent people in Gaza. We saw what happened on October 7. They are Nazis. Everyone who wants to harm the State of Israel should be killed. I hope my son will kill everyone who comes in front of him and wants to harm the State of Israel, including children."

These are MKs saying these things in Knesset…it’s the same as if an MP said it in parliament. These are not fringe extremists, these are elected politicians in positions of power and influence.

The song was sung by children from the border communities who were heavily hit on October 7th, and was released not longer after October 7th (about a month later). It was heavily criticised within Israel, and overall it was very negatively received, leading to it being (rightly) pulled by Kan not long after. I do not think it is evidence for the sweeping statement in the now deleted post, claiming that Israel brainwashes children in school into dehumanising Palestinians, nor evidence of the overall mindset of Israel citizens, which is what I was contesting.

I provided the name of a book written by an Israeli scholar in a previous post which argues that it does. 'Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology and Propaganda in Education' by Nurit Peled-Elhanan (Israeli scholar). I think mumsnet was being unreasonable deleting my post as while people are welcome to disagree with me if they wish, everything I said was evidence based. I also quoted from an article about a 2003 study by the Hebrew university of Jerusalem about dehumanizing language about Palestinians in Israeli school textbooks. There have been plenty of other studies done on the same topic. Here is a link to another one: https://www.jstor.org/stable/41859015?seq=5

One key difference is, this is so obviously man made and was preventable but was not addressed by the rest of the world. In other starvation or famine situations such as Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Haiti, Afghanistan etc, the UN and a multitude of aid agencies have been there and well funded by national governments to provide organised relief.

In Gaza, they are not allowed to do so and the same Israeli government that blocks them and all journalists is also denying the famine.

Secondly, I don't think it's true that "no one cares" about other situations. But it's not reasonable to expect everyone to be aware of everything and be equally vocal about all things.

Unfortunately now a point has been reached where, even if food was now provided, the effects of malnutrition and forthcoming disease spread is going to affect the people for years to come.

The famine and hunger in Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan etc..is also man made. Just so you know.

"An Israeli politician has broadcast shocking comments about babies being killed during a live interview on local TV.

“Every child, every baby in Gaza is an enemy. The enemy is not Hamas,” far-right Israeli politician Moshe Feiglin declared on Wednesday.

“We need to conquer Gaza and colonize it and not leave a single Gazan child there. There is no other victory.”

Video of the comments has been shared widely on social media, including by Adil Haque, a Professor of Law at the esteemed Rutgers Law School in the US state of New Jersey.

In sharing the video, Prof Haque wrote: “Yair Golan’s quote isn’t the problem.”

While I do think the suffering in Gaza is terrible.

I do also wonder, why does no one care that much when children starve in other countries. Which has been happening and has largely been ignored.

Children starving in other countries, lets ignore it and get on with our lives

Children starving in Gaza- this is terrible and the worst thing that i have ever seen.

It doesn't make sense.

In May MKs had a discussion about whether starving, sick or injured children in Gaza deserve treatment or even painkillers…

”… those who set the tone in the discussion were Halevi and Son Har-Melech. Contrary to Dr. Shaul’s hope, many around the table indeed thought that the starvation and torment of Gazan children are not only legitimate but even desirable.”

”Israel’s Knesset held a first-of-its-kind discussion on the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. During a meeting last Thursday, Dr. Sharon Shaul from NATAN, an Israeli-based organization that provides humanitarian aid around the world, made a seemingly trivial remark: “I think that even everyone sitting around this table doesn’t want a suffering child to be unable to receive painkillers or minimal medical treatment.”

“Israeli lawmaker Amit Halevi(Likud) angrily interrupted her: “I’m not sure you’re speaking for us when you say we want to treat every child and every woman. I hope you don’t stand behind that statement either. When fighting a group like this, the distinctions that exist in a normal world don’t exist.”

“Shaul didn’t back down: “I hope that you, too, don’t want a 4-year-old whose arm has been amputated to go without painkillers. I hope you have that empathy, too.”
Lawmaker Limor Son Har-Melech (Religious Zionism) couldn’t hold back: “The only treatment needed here is for you,” she said, pointing at Shaul. Another participant remarked: “You are the sickest doctor I’ve ever seen.”

Makes you wonder why none of the adults are remotely malnourished..

I know what you mean, those Palestinians look like they’re having a great time - moving from one party to the next - shelter bombed? Fuck it I hear a man down the road has an open house with enough food for the whole village. I don’t know what you guys are on about - I’d love to be in Gaza. I don’t know what all the fuss is about!. Fat bellies all round! Hmm

I don’t know where to start with this. What evidence have you got of Israel indoctrinating very young kids in schools to hate Palestinians? You are making a sweeping and dangerous statement, dehumanising Israelis (‘Zionists’) instead. How is that better than what you accuse Israel of doing?
why are so many posts on this thread using Holocaust inversion?
why is it not enough to state that babies are malnourished and starving, and this is horrifying and tragic?
the situation is bad enough without this unrelenting inflammatory language.

It’s rather the other way around. I never heard Jews stating that Palestinians (even babies) deserve to die. On the other hand if you talk to Palestinians about what they think of the Jews….
You can regularly see 4-5 year-old Palestinian little children in videos, dressed up in military uniforms, holding machine guns and chanting anti-Jewish slogans. Total brainwashing from a young age! Interestingly enough, you never see small Jewish children dressed up like soldiers and brandishing weapons around.
So what are you even talking about? 😕

Have you really never seen films of interviews with illegal settlers?

One side of my family were German Jewish refugees who escaped the holocaust by the skin of their teeth, I'm not saying that to make light of the holocaust, far from it. I recommend reading 'Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology and Propaganda in Education' by Nurit Peled-Elhanan (Israeli scholar) if you are interested.

Also this is from a guardian article from a few years ago, not sure if we can post links here? the article is called The language being used to describe Palestinians is genocidal.

"Generations of Israeli schoolchildren have been imbued with the idea that Arabs are interlopers and merely tolerated through the beneficence of Israel.

A 2003 study of Israeli textbooks by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem showed Arabs are principally depicted “with a camel, in an Ali Baba dress.”

“They describe Arabs as vile and deviant and criminal, people who don’t pay taxes, people who live off the state, people who don’t want to develop. You never see a Palestinian child or doctor or teacher or engineer or modern farmer,” the study said.

In 2002 during the second intifada, the Tel Aviv newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth published a letter by Israeli children titled: “Dear soldiers, please kill a lot of Arabs.” The paper said dozens of such letters were sent by schoolchildren."

The BBC were on an "air drop" plane and Jeremy Bowen peaked out even though he was told not to. He said neighbourhoods he had visited many times were literally flattened.

No wonder they keep everyone out and why this genocide is being prolonged. The world has woken up and now the Israelis are petrified what we will say when we actually see what they have done

This. Whole neighbourhood rased. Monsters. Thank goodness for people like Jeremy Bowen who won’t bow to pressure from Israel.

Indeed but it's not like we haven't seen any photos or footage from there...so that argument doesn't really wash. Rest assured if there were starving adults everywhere like in an actual famine, we'd know about it

We do know all about it but you’ll get the deniers in every genicide. Did you ever think that would be you?
