Men have differing standards of hygiene

I am convinced of it.

I thought it was normal to shower daily, change bedsheets at least once a week, general cleaning around the house but it seems that every single man I have been with does not share the same sentiments.

My DP does not smell - let me say that first and foremost. But he takes a shower once every few days? Which would make me feel incredibly icky.

Bedsheets. He would happily change them weeks and weeks later. I am the one reminding that they need to go im the wash every Sunday.

Laundry. He will happily wear tops or bottoms that he's dropped food down, where as I would need to put in the wash and wear something new. He waits until he has almost 3 loads to fill to wash hos clothes, and I do laundry twice a week.

General cleaning. I thought it was standard to wipe down surfaces after cooking or do some household activities daily, especially cleaning the toilet etc. He can go weeks without doing anything.

Its not even my current DP, others I have dated have kept their houses in a much worse state than mine, or sprtiz on some deodorant rather than get in the shower for 5 mins.

Ive come to the conclusion that most men simply do not have the cleanliness and hygiene standards that women have.

A penis washed only every few days wouldn't be getting anywhere near me.

Nor would an unwashed bum. It’s just gross.

vdbfamily · 25/07/2025 17:09

I have put YA I as I am female and would happily go a few weeks in same sheets. I hoover maybe weekly, sometimes less. I do tidy kitchen every evening and hob top is always cleaned but DH shoots and cooks so that is only fair. I agree men notice and care less generally about housework but I am probably more' male' in my approach.

lovemelongtime · 25/07/2025 17:07

No, my husband is really clean both personal hygiene and around the house. He takes charge of all the domestics, which is fine by me

Yabberwok · 25/07/2025 17:05

Wow I break the mold then! I don't shower everyday as I've got dry skin. But thoroughly wash every day. I am the one who cleans loos, keeps track of floor washing, sheet changing, mattress flipping as I'm retired.

My first job was as a bank cashier back in the 80s, small airless cubicle with bullet proof glass. One of the ladies in her 50s came to work every day after mucking out her horses, changed into clothes she kept in a cupboard for weeks and worked next to me....so it's not just men

Lavenderandbrown · 25/07/2025 17:02

These threads always amaze me. I shower twice a day and it bothers me my DH only wants to shower once a day. Sometimes I just tell him ….you need to shower. I change the sheets weekly and my son showers twice a day sometimes 3 if he is working out. We all have what I call “professionally physical jobs. Not slinging bags of cement but not just sitting at a desk either. Honestly I can smell people who think they are clean and don’t smell. They do they are just used to it. And absolutely teeth brushing several times a day

JHound · 25/07/2025 17:01

On a side note - I would never date let alone marry a man with poor personal hygiene.

reversegear · 25/07/2025 16:57

My DS are better than that at 18 and 21 shower daily was bedding and keep clean, that’s just shitty parenting.

outerspacepotato · 25/07/2025 16:56

I'm pretty clean and I don't date dirty, slovenly men who can't or won't take care of their environment. The men in my family were clean, wore clean clothes, and kept things tidy around the house. They cooked too. People would make remarks if someone went around unwashed or in dirty clothes and a dirty house drew bugs.

My DH has better personal hygiene than me - he will shower at least once a day, he sometimes has to remind me I should hose myself down Grin
Neither of us is changing bedsheets weekly.

Are you me? 🤣 My DH does way more cleaning than me and he has a bath everyday. I'll shower every other day, mostly 🤭

JHound · 25/07/2025 16:55

#Notallmen.

Most men I know shower daily.

Ive come to the conclusion that most men simply do not have the cleanliness and hygiene standards that women have.

I’ve had two husbands, both deceased now, and a partner now.

All of them bathed/showered at least once a day, if not more.

Some people (both sexes) have low hygiene standards, some don’t.

User32459 · 25/07/2025 16:49

I don't think a lot of men would bother at all if a) their partner didn't demand it or b) they had a date coming round so they had to make an effort

You do get men who are clean freaks but most really don't care.

Ohhhthedrama · 25/07/2025 16:49

Ooof! , I couldn't be with someone who doesn't take care of themselves. My husband is ex military and good personal hygiene and keeping your living space clean and organized has been drummed into him.

user1497787065 · 25/07/2025 16:34

I change sheets weekly and often pillowcases twice a week but I am a dribbler!

ginasevern · 25/07/2025 16:32

Remember when they used to put bowls of crisps or peanuts on the bar in pubs. It was generally stopped because they were covered in man piss. Men don't wash their hands after the loo very often and, in my experience, have lesser standards of hygiene.

ZoomingSusan · 25/07/2025 16:29

I know lots of hygienic men. Some of what you describe is gross, but your standards for changing sheets ATLEAST weekly are higher than mine. Fortnightly is fine for me.

skymagentatwo · 25/07/2025 16:29

@ellie09 Well yes all men have differing standards of hygiene and so do all women.

So im struggling to see any point to your post, I know a lot of girl friends I have had that are far worse and messy than many of the guys I have dated and my DH is always the one to do the washing and cleaning.

CherryYellowCouch · 25/07/2025 16:27

ellie09 · 25/07/2025 16:05

I had one ex who was always very particular about his hygiene... Turns out he was gay!

My grandad who is 80 also has very immaculate hygiene and cleanliness.

Maybe its a generational thing.

It’s a “get what you settle for” thing.

No man who didn’t wash everyday or wear clean clothes would get the opportunity for a 3rd date let alone live with me.

All the men in my life regardless of generation have the same standards of hygiene as the women.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/07/2025 16:26

Do you not respect yourself enough to NOT put up living with and presumably be intimate with a man that has poor hygiene and questionable clothing standards and laundry habits?

Stop settling for creatures like this please, it does no one any good and promotes rewarding substandard males.

PinkArt · 25/07/2025 16:24

The alternative view of course would be that men aren't generating unnecessary amounts of work for themselves/ the household. Bedding really doesn't need washing weekly, a person who is doesn't smell on their current schedule clearly doesn't need to shower daily.

HerewardtheSleepy · 25/07/2025 16:21

As a bloke I totally agree.
I do draw the line at wearing food-stained clothing tho'
(or any other stains, come to that)

meatbawls · 25/07/2025 16:21

I do not smell - usually. But I tend not to take a shower more than every other day, it feels unnecessary. I will have one if I am going somewhere in particular (I wfh).
Bedsheets - 2 weeks.
Laundry. I do when it needs doing, but if something isn't dirty I of course wear it again.
General cleaning. I wipe down and that's about it. We do have a cleaner.

I think being overly 'clean' is a complete waste of time. Good enough is good enough.

JohnTheRevelator · 25/07/2025 16:21

Every single man I have ever dated or been in a relationship with has been like this (or worse!). Even my brother, who is so fastidious in himself (showering daily, washing hands before eating etc) goes weeks without cleaning the toilet or doing a bit of vacuuming.

HeadNorth · 25/07/2025 16:17

Maryberrysaga · 25/07/2025 16:13

Yuck. No my DH is not like that. He showers everyday, sometimes twice and his house was clean and tidy when we met. He continues to keep our house clean and tidy now.
