@SummerEve Yet, it was still dreadful

It bothered you so it had the desired effect.

You’re beyond hope.

@WhereIsMyJumper It scares me that you or anyone else requires persuasion regarding the righteousness of the death penalty and the decision to not allow these kinds of people to live. This shouldn't even be up for debate.

We’re supposed to be a ‘civilised’ country. Of course it should be up for debate.

Or would you like to go the whole hog and start cutting off hands for stealing etc?

The fact it’s so emotionally loaded and contentious is exactly why debate and not knee-jerk reaction is necessary.

SummerEve · 24/07/2025 23:56

bluewanda · 24/07/2025 23:53

It doesn’t. But it makes me feel she has some sort of justice. To follow your logic, why lock these people up at all IF they can be rehabilitated instead?

Kindly, you don’t seem to understand what justice means. I have already acknowledged that not everyone can be rehabilitated several posts ago.

Look at the language you’re using. It makes YOU ‘feel’ like she has some sort of justice. Why should it matter how YOU personally feel about it, over the bigger picture of reducing violence in prisons?

Also, rehabilitation is carried out while people are locked up. For those that can be rehabilitated, anyway.

Well, it is being debated. So either debate in good faith or carry on insulting people and see how far you get with it.
People have already made several very good points as to why it shouldn’t be legalised but rather than engaging in the discussion you’re just constantly calling people dim. It’s not a good look.

And how does it being good enough for you change the outcome for Sara?

Please can you elaborate? How many dead people went on to commit more crimes? Please link to stats. I would be fascinated to see.

Hence why I spoke about the wider context, but you already know that.

bluewanda · 24/07/2025 23:52

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/07/2025 23:46

There were countless mistakes made and he should never have been allowed to keep her. She was failed by agencies that should have protected her.

Yes, you’re right. What I meant (and didn’t express very well) was that no amount of trying to make those two bastards into better people would have worked. They were rotten to the core.

zaazaazoom · 24/07/2025 23:51

This case is horrific and shocked me to the core. The murderer should never be released. However I don't think the death penalty should be used.
My granny was raped then murdered in the 1950s abroad. It was horrific and has had an obvious lasting impact on my mother and aunties and uncles. Her murderer was tried and found guilty. He was then hanged. It happened within 4 months.
He didn't ever have to think about what he had done or spent years regretting it. He was freed from all that.
Also, what if it wasn't him (no witnesses, no DNA stuff back then) and a terrible miscarriage if justice had happened how will it ever be rectified?

SummerEve · 24/07/2025 23:51

bluewanda · 24/07/2025 23:49

He’d have known that’s why he was attacked. That’s good enough for me.

OonaStubbs · 24/07/2025 23:45

We should have a referendum on whether to bring back the death penalty. I am very confident that "yes" would win, and by quite a large margin.

It would be brexit all over again, with even less reason. “People” as a herd are stupid, fearful and driven by their emotions. That is not justice, nor is it an appropriate way to make decisions. The death penalty is not a deterrent, not something reasonable societies do, so a referendum would be the worst possible thing as I fear you might be right.

Robin67 · 24/07/2025 23:50

SummerEve · 24/07/2025 23:48

That’s worked great in the wider context in the USA, hasn’t it?

JoyDivision79 · 24/07/2025 23:50

OonaStubbs · 24/07/2025 23:47

The death penalty is not "legalising murder". Murder is by definition, unlawful killing. I would bring it back and apply it retrospectively. Free up space in prisons by executing all those convicted of murder.

They would absolutely mess it up, make mistakes, kill innocent people. I can even imagine the wrong prisoner being taken and put to death because he was sat in his mates cell on the wrong day.

I'm being facetious, well not entirely, yet, we can't underestimate the utter idiocy, incompetence and power trip mentality of too many ' in charge '.

novanova5 · 24/07/2025 23:47

I doubt he made any link between his own actions and being assaulted himself, to be honest.

And those who were wrongly convicted? What about them?

TizerorFizz · 24/07/2025 23:48

As a civilized society, WE don’t kill people. We don’t sink that low. Let the USA do that. Revenge is not Justice. It’s ugly retribution. No state murder and no death penalty.

SummerEve · 24/07/2025 23:48

Robin67 · 24/07/2025 23:45

So does killing them to be fair. It has the ultimate low risk of reoffending rate.

That’s worked great in the wider context in the USA, hasn’t it?

It made him feel a fraction of the fear he inflicted on his poor child. Do you not think he deserves that, at the very least?

I doubt he made any link between his own actions and being assaulted himself, to be honest.
