Vaping is EVERYWHERE

So the kids are off on summer holidays and I am trying to find nice activities to do. Went to the cinema yesterday, and a father with her young daughter, just gets out his vape and has a puff right in front of me while we were waiting to go in.

Then today at a play centre, Im sat in the cafe and a mother gets out her vape and surreptitiously has some of the vape and the oncoming plume of smoke...in my bloody direction.

I've been in Tesco, and someone just used it casually as you like. When I mentioned it to staff, they just shrugged their shoulders....I didn't see it.

Its bad enough people inflicting others with their noisy phones, but why oh why do people do this?!! In areas where kids are playing???? I dont care that you are addicted...that is not my problem!! People who smoke are addicted and would never dream of lighting up a cig!!!

Rant over.....

Could you be anymore patronising.
There’s no comparison to standing next to someone and breathing the same air, to someone who is smoking or vaping.
As far as many of these threads being hysterical, is it just because you don’t agree, so then turn it around, the other person is just being hysterical.

Erm

'huge cloud'
'massive smoke plumes'
'smoke from your lungs'
'adult dummy'
'pacifiers'
'I saw someone with a vape on a bike today!!'
'it's like breathing in a fart'

all of those are hyperbole and hysterical. It's ridiculous.

The UK has the lowest rate of smoking in Europe which is great but that means the tobacco companies have an incentive to push vaping. I feel the government has been caught out by this and not regulated in properly. Its still addictive, contains nicotine and has nasty consequences but they have been allowed to market it to teenagers.

The UK has the lowest rate of smoking in Europe* in large part because our public health system took a progressive attitude to vaping as a method of harm reduction. Over the course of eight years, Public Health England produced some really outstanding evidence reviews covering every aspect of vaping you could possibly think of. They also produced sensible policy recommendations and got stop smoking services on board. It's a massive shame this work does not seem to have been continued since PHE was scrapped.

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/e-cigarettes-and-vaping-policy-regulation-and-guidance

Tobacco companies only got involved relatively recently. It used to be all SMEs, very often run by vapers themselves who were really happy and excited to have finally found a way to quit smoking after years of failed attempts. The Tobacco Products Directive (EU law introduced in 2016 which regulated vapes as 'tobacco products') tipped the market in the tobacco companies' favour. I don't think they started producing vapes until after the TPD.

There have been issues with disposables and marketing. Disposables are now banned and we're getting new laws around marketing. It's been illegal to sell vapes to under 18s for years. What's really needed is for trading standards to have a much bigger budget and greater enforcement powers.

*We share the lowest rate with Norway, where Snus has been popular for centuries.

You are being slightly hysterical about some sweetened vapour.

This is about people vaping inside, enclosed spaces, not agreeing to this, is hardly being hysterical.

Zov · 23/07/2025 20:23

YANBU. I hate it. I think people look like toddlers sucking dummies when they are sucking on them!' They were originally created to help people quit smoking, and were only meant for short term use, but many people just started to 'vape' for shits and giggles. Daft thing to do, and they look daft, sucking on them!

As has been said, God alone knows what the long term effects are going to be.

placemats · 23/07/2025 20:19

I can't understand it. Went to a country park and whilst no one was smoking a lighted cigarette, the vaping was awful. Plus saw some empty vape canisters along the trails.

It's becoming a concern now. I don't want to breathe in your vapour exhalation.

DelphiniumDoreen · 23/07/2025 20:09

Vaping is a health crisis waiting to happen me thinks.

PencilsInSpace · 23/07/2025 20:05

marmite2025 · 23/07/2025 17:36

It’s not, because it’s not pressurised or released by a propellant gas

it’s similar to dry ice. The coil heats up the liquid, which produces the vapour

An aerosol is a cloud of droplets suspended in air and technically the visible cloud from a vape is an aerosol.

The visible 'steam' from a kettle is also an aerosol. Actual steam - water in its gaseous state - is not visible. Sometimes you can see a small gap between the spout of a fast boiling kettle and the visible cloud - that's the steam.

Fog is another aerosol.

To those saying im "hysterical" because I'm sick of dealing with inconsiderate people in enclosed spaces where THEY KNOW they shouldn't be vaping is the biggest load of hyperbole I've ever read. Gawd you make me laugh!! 🤣🤣🤣

People are defensive as they know it’s anti social but don’t want to stop doing it.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 23/07/2025 19:36

I see these vapes as pacifiers. Sane as constantly sucking water from large cups or slurping coffee continuously. We are trying to self soothe as life is shit. I don’t like vaping. Don’t like the smell and pity the people I see doing it. I do see it as a sign of weakness which I’m sure is an unpopular opinion.

Ihateboris · 23/07/2025 19:32

It's disgusting. They're like the adult version of a dummy 🤣

If you fart from your lungs you have bigger issues than a puff of steam in a queue to worry about.

I said YOU may as well fart in my face. Vapers may as well be farting from their lungs...and I agree, they have problems.

After800Years · 23/07/2025 19:08

It’s definitely considered a lot less antisocial than smoking is which I think makes some vapers think it’s not antisocial at all.

I don’t like the plumes of smoke/steam/water vapour either, I realise the air contains air other people have breathed out but the direct stream from someone’s mouth into your face is quite intrusive and disgusting. Most people wouldn’t do it with a cigarette but feel it’s acceptable from a vape

It's vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol, both commonly found in food and drink. Hate it as much as you like but lying about it being plastics just makes you look silly.

I am not a vaper, Google is free ✌️

The use of the word ‘think’ and ? does not suggest I was outright lying, I was questioning something I hadn’t googled but had heard of. The definition of lying is not ‘asking a question of which you are not sure if the answer’. I am not adverse to learning new things, just adverse to unpleasant pedants with sticks up their bums 🙄

I was a vaper and I believe that some of the plastics in the cheap containers from refillable vapes can leach the plastic.

Also, Google tells me that propylene is used in plastics, and is present in vape liquid. So I am not deludedly off the mark..no?

I will patiently wait for the apology!

Just this morning I saw a lady vaping whilst riding her bike!

Edited

So what? Did she stop specially in order to blow it out in your face? She can vape or smoke on her bike if she wishes.

Did you call the police to get it logged? Why not?

🤣🤣

It absolutely does create a plume of smoke. I watched the woman in the cafe create that in front of my eyes!

No, it isn't smoke. It is vapour. They are different.

I don't vape or smoke, but my parents were dyed in the wool smokers. I know the difference between vapour and smoke a mile off.

My mother has just turned 90. She switched from cigarettes (after almost 80 years of 40+ fags a day) after a severe bout of pneumonia almost killed her 3 or 4 years ago.

We'll never get her off nicotine in afraid, but the cloud if vapour around her now is infinitely preferable to the fug of actual smoke that used to follow her around. Vaping sneakily where she shouldn't is now something my mother also does, thinking she is being subtle (it's about as subtle as a bulldozer). I do pull her up on it but she never listens and it is me on a hiding to nothing. Vapes are as far as we are going to get her and I have to appreciate that (reluctantly).

I know vapes have their controversies, and I do agree with some of those, but they do also have their uses for persuading stubborn smokers away from cigarettes.

OSTMusTisNT · 23/07/2025 18:45

I'm pretty sure more people vape now compared to the number of smokers in 80's and 90's. Government should get taxing them, packet of fags must be £20 ish (not my area of expertise) so slap tax onto vapes to have some minimum price of e.g £15 and kids will soon move onto something else. Or, maybe just go back to Diamond White and MD 20/20 like the good old days.

WonderingWanda · 23/07/2025 18:45

It's so revolting, such a putrid sickly smell. I think I prefer the smell of smoking to be honest.

So defensive @RedSeven.

The pervasive smell of Britain in the U.K. in 2025 is fruity vapes and weed.

Could be worse.. also where do you live where the smell is always of weed?

Foreverm0re · 23/07/2025 18:39

RedSeven · 23/07/2025 16:35

Yup, can tell it's the school holidays 😂

Yes because children and teenagers choose to spend time on mumsnet 🙄

a lot of vapers are inconsiderate arseholes.

Jordan North did a documentary on them (might still be on iPlayer) which essentially confirmed that they are very much not just flavoured water. If I remember correctly he quit vaping as a result of what he found out and the danger they pose.
It’s the inconsideration for me. Why I should be forced to breathe it in just because someone else has chosen to be reckless with their health.

Oh yes I saw him on somewhere talking about the documentary and how he stopped vaping,
