Paid for seats on ryan air and kids still sat separately

Has anyone had any success getting a refund and compensati on.? We paid the extra to ensure we were with the kids all together and they sat all four of us completely separately, not even across an aisle or one row away like five and twenty five rows away from each other

I would complain to Ryanair, they were very helpful when we paid for seating and then realised that we had to have seating allocated by the airline due to passenger disabilities. They refunded straight away, unfortunately we paid through a holiday company and they were less than forthcoming on offering a refund although the airline had refunded them. They did eventually refund but only after I had been told absolutely not when I first contacted them.

IBEAN · 26/07/2025 19:38

Of course it matters. If you have children, you need to have this sorted. But I know for a fact that they do not site a child and parent apart, ever. They might put a family with a parent each but hard luck cheap flight

notimagain · 26/07/2025 19:37

Everyone needs to refuse to pay for seats. It’s an outrageous con no more or less that discriminates against people with children (who already paid more for school holiday). But it’ll never happen with the mumsnet smunty capitalists about.

Ryanair made an average of £8 per head, average passenger according to last annual report (most airlines make about the same). By all means refuse to pay for seat choice but you'll need to accept that if everyone does it basic fares will increase to compensate...capitalism is a bit of a sod.....

It doesn't matter where everyone sits you all get there at the same time

It matters to me. No way would I want my young children sitting next to anyone else on a flight except me.

If I was flying on my own or with another adult I would not care less where I sat.

IBEAN · 26/07/2025 19:35

I get that but to do it to a family, well just no. This is engagement farming, some people just like to be noticed. Mumsnet is full of them.

Thank you, that helps my fear. I have paid to sit together anyway but glad to hear they do this 😊

With Easyjet was check in as soon as it opens (is it still 30 days?) Because they overbook...but they are good at putting families together.

Exactly what I came on to say.
I had such a bad experience with them 15 years ago I vowed never to fly with them again. They obviously haven’t changed!

I fly with them because it’s our only choice, Easyjet timings don’t work with connections either end. I’m sure I’m not the only one in that position, we don’t all live near London airports and have a range of options. I find them mostly OK, but when it goes wrong they don’t handle it well.

But is this true? Have never ever heard of anyone booking seats and being placed elsewhere, I mean ever?

It’s in the small print that selected seats are not guaranteed.

It clearly does matter to a lot of people, which is why we pay extra to book seats.

YANBU OP in that you should have been seated with your young children but paying for it or not makes no difference with respect to safety and the wellbeing of young children.

The only time I've ever been moved from a booked seat was on Ryanair. They're so bad its beyond incompetence, they just genuinely do not give a single fuck about customers. But they're so cheap that people will keep using them so why would they change?

Really? I was in a transatlantic flight a few years ago when a family had been split, it was a large family and they’d put them in 2 groups and laid on a glass of champagne for everyone (all adults) sometimes planes have to be swapped out and they don’t all have the same seat configuration. Very plausible that on Ryanair no thought at all goes into who gets moved when this happens.

Cocolebombom · 26/07/2025 19:30

L0bstersLass · 23/07/2025 13:34

This.
When I booked a flight with them in Feb, I chose my seats as part of the buying process.
Did you overlook the fact that you have to select you seats @Hookahchakkah?

Oh you irritating b*5ch did you forget to read her post correctly? Yes this can bloody happen all the people saying it can't are naive idiots.

Honestly anybody who flies with Ryanair deserves all they get. I flat out refuse to fly with them.

Preachscreen · 26/07/2025 19:19

That's absolutely disgusting! I have a teenager and we book to ensure we sit together, yes she would survive on her own but she would feel very uncomfortable and awkward. So we pay eith our hard earned money to sit together. I hope you pursue and get somewhere with a complaint! It's not just being seated separately, it's the attitude and tainted start to a holiday.

I’ve been very careful to check my bag sizes for recent flights. As I said, the policy isn’t the problem, it’s the way it’s operated that I take issue with.

My post wasn't aimed at you but at those who believe the change has already happened.

EasyJet will be fine. Even if you don’t select they try to seat families together, unlike Ryanair whose policy is to split up groups who don’t pay.

We paid for the seats next to each other and checked the boarding passes and went to the airport, checked in went through to security, had a sandwich and went to the gate.

At the gate they said these aren’t your seats anymore we have to move you. We said no we’ve paid to sit together and one of us is ten. They said sorry try on the plane, we said no help is now, can you at least switch the seats so the ten year old isn’t by himself they said no. We said who can we speak to they said just get on the plane. We said he can’t sit 23 rows away from us they said madam get on the plane. We were almost last on and tried to speak to the steward was but there was anbkuncmenet which said get to your seats now we are going to miss the air traffic window, i begged someone to swap (which they did reluctantly before I got told to sit and showed the original seats so the kids could at least sit together but they were a few rows from my husband. I went to the other end of the plane and I tried to get their attention and gave up.

as soon as I could I grabbed an air hostess and said my kids are by themselves she said you’ll have to wait for seatbelts

as soon as seatbelts went off I went down to check on them and the drinks trolley was coming up. The stewatdesss told me to go back and wait and I said “my kids have been say by themselves can I check on them”

the other stewardess said very loudly what’s going on and the first one said “she wants to check on her kids”

the other one said very loudly “well that’s convenient timing isn’t it” and I said loudly to her “you’ve sat our kids by themselves even though we paid, can i just check that they are ok please”
qns she rolled her eye and roll ed the trolley back.

I checked very quickly they were fine which was a relief and they were waiting impatiently.

I said “we’ve paid to sit together and you’ve sat us all separately” and she said “oh yeah we did know there was a family of four that had been separated.

I asked what had happened and she said she didn’t know.

there was one spare seat near so me and my husband and I sat five and seven rows back.

it was only a two hour flight and we were about 45 minutes in by this time. She came and asked us if we wanted to all be moved to sit together and most people around us were either asleep or with small kids but I don’t understand if they knew we were separated before we even got on the plane that they allowed this to happen.

So after take off and trolley service, you were given the opportunity to sit together and said no??

She came and asked us if we wanted to all be moved to sit together

LlynTegid · 26/07/2025 19:15

If there is a safeguarding issue (speaking as not having had training on this for many years so asking those who know more about this) in the air, under whose jurisdiction does it come? Would the possibility of Michael O'Leary as the controlling mind having to face a court of law for this make a policy change?

wonderstuff · 26/07/2025 19:11

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 26/07/2025 18:21

This worries me when travelling with easyJet later this year. I’ve paid to sit together with my 10 and 2 year old. If the 10 year old is alone she’ll have an anxiety meltdown on the plane and be hysterical. She’s worried about being alone. Trying my best to build her confidence currently.

God help anyone if they split the 2 year old up from me. She’ll cause chaos on the plane if not constantly held in her seat. I can’t find anything online about age limits on whether they split up from adults. It’s all very vague with “no guarantees”.

EasyJet will be fine. Even if you don’t select they try to seat families together, unlike Ryanair whose policy is to split up groups who don’t pay.

Crazy - I booked with ryan air in desperation, when my son was 23 months, pre paid for the seats so we were together ( he was enormous at 18 months, lap was not an option)
Got to my seats - obnoxious lady in one - refused to move
Only other free seat was 12 rows back!
Crew bloody useless.
Everyone else just ignoring the situation.
Told as he was still under 2 just, like 4 days he could sit on my lap.
I declined that option as not a physical option. ( Said child is now 6ft 6!! aged 17)
Told to sit down or we would lose the slot.
Spoke to child who really is the most placid being normally, that Mummy was going to her seat, here was bear and his treats, shout if he needed me. He smiled oblivious to what that meant.
Plonked him in the middle seat, lent over dumb bitch and fastened his set belt and smiled and said good luck!
Walked to the back of the plane - it took all of 3 minutes before the lungs of my now national swimming level son let the plane know what he thought!

At that point the passengers pointed out to dumb bitch she was being ridiculous and to move. She did but I still got comments about how I should have booked - I did!
Have never flown with ryan air since - good to see their shit safeguarding remains!

Samesame12 · 26/07/2025 18:59

This happened to me. Twice! Its seems to be when they change the plane. So it’s not scheduled plane for some reason or another. Ive never raised it with ryanair because you know how they are. I would have more success talking to a chicken than those idiots!

Tahlbias · 26/07/2025 18:51

I would complain and try to get a refund. I found the staff on Ryanair very rude. My daughter is autistic and when she needs the toilet, she needs to go there and then. I was standing by the toilet, waiting for my daughter to finish washing her hands and the air stewardess pushed past me, no excuse me or anything.
