Being told I can’t drink out of certain mugs

I’m staying at my parents house and my dad has said “don’t drink out of my mug that’s the only one I can find that’s like this so you can’t have it drink from your own” so I said “you’re pathetic and this is exactly why you and I will never see eye to eye. Because you behave like a child”

I made my tea in another mug and never bothered speaking to him for the rest of my time here.

I don’t get on with him anyway. So a mug wouldn’t change a dynamic that suggests two people who don’t get on. He later walks over to my mother and says “she’s damaged the boot on her car by the way” none of his business because he doesn’t even pay for the car (apart from one insurance payment that I covered when the car came). He’s childish and pathetic.

@ThePerkyCoralPoet If you don’t get on with him, It might be best not to stay with them in future as @RedNine says.

No point staying with someone whom you don’t get on with.

RedNine · 22/07/2025 23:27

It's not your home though, is it.

Fragmentedbrain · 22/07/2025 23:27

Threads like this make me so glad I don't have kids. Poor man.

Done2much · 22/07/2025 23:27

op YABU
you sound like a nasty piece of work and wouldn't it be better all round if you found somewhere else to live

ThePerkyCoralPoet · 22/07/2025 23:14

Childish. Why act like I’m not his daughter. It’s a mug. He’s just pathetic.

But this could equally apply to you op!

Surely this is clickbait, unless there's a massive backstory which will then be drip fed . We all have favourite items that we don't share in our house, mugs, towels, a couple of other things, I've never considered it childish or pathetic. Can't understand why the Op is so outraged by this.

It’s not clickbait. No. Me and my dad don’t get on generally so I just don’t understand the concept of gate keeping a mug. At work, yes. No one should touch my mug. But at home. Makes no sense.

We have mugs. Anyone can drink out of any mug but when it has a big M on it for Monday and my DD has a big D on hers then she’s going to choose her mug. I also have a favourite mug because it’s bigger - I don’t tell people not to use it but they know I prefer it.
But this isn’t about mugs at all. I’d stop visiting and if you want to see your mother invite her to stay with you.,

Dontthink · 22/07/2025 23:26

Not sharing a mug is childish and weird. It’s ok to have a favourite but to deny others is bizarre

Where I've lived -at home with parents, student flat, with bf or H , with my own children we've always had our " own" cups or mugs. Our favourite one . And no one else would use it.
So I don't think its strange your Dad wanting his own special one.
However the antagonism between the two of you over the mug incident seems quite ott.

Do you not get on together OP?

No I don’t see eye to eye with him. Never have and I don’t think I ever will.

I have a mug in my cupboard that I've known about it for 40 yrs but it could easily be 50 even 60 yrs old and I used it every time I was at. My Aunty Lily's and when she moved into her nursing home she gave it to me as she knew how much I love it. It is at the back of the cupboard so that my children don't touch it and break it.

My dad also has a mug that is more like a bucket and all the people in the nursing home know it is his mug and how he likes his coffee.

ninjahamster · 22/07/2025 23:24

Loads of people have favourite mugs? My son Has certain ones he loves, none of us would use them. I only like drinking out of Emma bridgewater mugs.
I think you’re being really brattish. I’m sure there are plenty of other mugs you can use.

HeyWiggle · 22/07/2025 23:24

If one of my kids asked me not to drink out of their favourite mug we would have a good laugh about it and I’d do some leg pulling. Bit weird to be all daggers about a mug. Time to move on.

RedNine · 22/07/2025 23:23

Do you have to stay there in future? If you want to see your Mum you could book a hotel nearby and meet mum only or have her visit you?

(I don't really understand about the car and the payment tbh)

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/07/2025 23:22

Where I work, we all have our own mugs. It's close to war being declared if soemone drinks out of someone else's mug - it comes across as an almighty 'this is yours, but fuck you.'

Deadringer · 22/07/2025 23:22

We all have our own mugs in our house. I wouldn't mind if my dd used my mug, but we like each other.

CaptainFuture · 22/07/2025 23:21

Viviennemary · 22/07/2025 23:18

You sound like a rude stroppy pain in the neck. It's a wonder you get invited anywhere.

This so @ThePerkyCoralPoet he's s dick for wanting that mug, but you also wanting same mug is a hero/victim?

Dontsayyouloveme · 22/07/2025 23:21

You both sound very similar, maybe that’s why you don’t get on..

topcat2014 · 22/07/2025 23:21

But then I've no time for people overly attached to stuff hoarders

JaneGrint · 22/07/2025 23:21

This is a massive overreaction to being told not to use a particular mug.

There’s got to be more to this than just an argument over a mug, surely?

Dontthink · 22/07/2025 23:20

Yanbu

Itstheweekendyasssss · 22/07/2025 23:20

I think in the context of a loving dynamic you wouldn’t mind this at all, but as someone else has pointed out there must be lots else behind this and this has flicked a switch. Need to know more to know if
your response is unreasonable, I guess!

myplace · 22/07/2025 23:19

We all have favourite mugs. I would ask my kids to use a different mug, but I don’t need to. They wouldn’t dream of it. And they have their own favourites!

The time to complain is if all the mugs are ‘the wrong one’. DM doesn’t let me use any of the scent mugs, only the crap ones. But she’s ridiculous and too old to argue with.

Nessiesfoodprovider · 22/07/2025 23:19

We have our favoured mugs that we tend to use. Different ones for which type of tea or coffee etc. There's none of that snippiness about not using someone else's mug though!
It sounds like an easy way for him to wind you up. I'd be looking to stop staying with your parents if you've not already left.

topcat2014 · 22/07/2025 23:18

What a miserable grumpy old man your father is.
