To quite like being fat?

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 17:33

There was one time that i was 9 stone. This year i am the heaviest i have ever been.

Every week for that last year i have been thinking that i must lose weight, and i have been trying every diet , and thinking about food all the time.

I was so stressed from it all that i decided to give myself and not think about dieting for one month.

I was just thinking this month, I quite emjoy being fat. Im not morbidly obese, i am fat.

I feel nice and warm and cozy

When i was thin, i rememember feeling cold and having low energy a lot.

Has anyone else felt the same?

I am making perfect sense.

I am saying that i feel mentally and physically great being fat.

However i also feel the severe western society pressure to be thin. Which is why i will start a diet again in september.

Pressure to be thin is only in our culture. Ive been to India. In India, people are admired for bing fat.

I told them that people are always trying to be thin in my culture. They said "what, people do that out of choice?"
Because to them: thinness is a sign of lack of food and sickness.

India is experiencing an obesity epidemic and the rates of heart disease are increasing exponentially.

i know India, very well ( 17 trips over thirty years) so have watched the change from a mainly home cooked, mainly vegetarian diet to the utter onslaught of processed rubbish that people consume now.

Your reference to “severe” western culture - well, I find that baffling.

”to thine own self, be true “

This thread has been positive for many pps. There is too much shame and negativity around weight.

I'm not suggesting obesity should be celebrated but it shouldn't be shameful either.

The mental impact of carrying weight, the judgement is much more severe than the actual extra weight.

No one wakes up thinking "I'm going to be fat in the future" I don't have the hunger hormone, it's a blessing and a curse, my beautiful Dsis has a lot of food noise, she eats healthy but shes always hungry, so much of her time is wasted worrying about her weight. She is very glamorous and dresses well, she looks fabulous.

The old saying about you have to choose between your face and your figure

Genuinely only read that shite on MN, along with "I was so guant looking when I was only 9 stone", from overweight women.

Meanwhile there are millions of 9 stone women all over the world who look perfectly healthy in the face and have lovely figures.

I wonder if all the silly 'gaunt' and 'figure/face' excuses will stop soon, with the amount of MNetters on the weight loss jabs.

Do you know , I think they might !

wizzywig · 22/07/2025 22:56

Op it being ok to be fat in India is no longer the case. Yes they'll call it 'healthy' but it always meant fat and now its not a good thing.

But I was your height and weight and have lost loads of weight on mounjaro. I had no health concerns, I still don't. I had amazing boobs and an arse and now it's gone. Hey ho. You do you x

Lots of people look younger when they are not slim (not everyone, but most of the people over 30 I know/see around would fit into this category). The old saying about you have to choose between your face and your figure (some choose botox etc, which is their choice, but even allowing for that, most people do seem to look younger. Not that this should influence what they do, and it's totally their choice, but OP, I think a lot of people actually agree with you! Feeling able to eat what you like/not following a diet might make you happier too, maybe.
A health secretary also said it's better for your health to carry a bit of extra weight as you get older, would have to google her name. Anyway, your body, your choice.

Your husband sounds like a dick and a disappointment and I am sorry that he couldn’t feel the same about you when you were a bit larger. I’m not sure I could forgive someone being so superficial.

He was just honest when asked after the event surely…?
I’d hate it if my husband gave up on his health and pride in appearance and became very overweight /obese from a looks/attractiveness perspective.
i don’t think I’d have any control over feeling like that tbh …

Your choice of wording, especially the part about how you are good looking and would be invisible if you gain weight.

I said me, not everyone. A lot of people do look good overweight but not me.

Bushra385 · 22/07/2025 22:49

I’m so glad for you ! I hope you continue to be happy with yourself. Ignore the negativity xxx

I used to be anorexic and clinically underweight and now I'm overweight.

I used to be freezing cold, felt tired ALL THE TIME. I didn't get my period back until a BMI of 22.5. I've been seven stone lighter than I am today when I was at my sickest. Wasn't sure i'd see 30.

By BMI I should be around 2 stone lighter and I think I probably look 'better' at that weight (by some standards). But I definitely look a lot better now than I did seven stone ago! I've been there. I've been ALL the weights. This one feels good. I eat well, I'm active, I'm a size 14/16 (I'm also 5'9). I'm also post surgery/pregnancy which caused some weight gain - I'm around a stone higher than usual.

I'll lose this stone without trying now that I'm more active and healed and then I'll be just fine.

Honestly, if you eat well and stay active you'll settle into a size that is where you'll stay happily. Life is TOO SHORT to worry about being thin. You can be happy and overweight - I'm living proof.

I love this and needed to read this as a recovered anorexic currently battling being chunky but breastfeeding so not really doing anything about it and not really sure I want to

KimberleyClark · 22/07/2025 22:48

My BMI is 29.6. About 12 years ago I did weightwatchers and went down to 21.8. I’m currently a stone heavier than I was before I started the Weightwatchers! I’m not happy with my weight but really feel that dieting is not the answer. I have an underactive thyroid Keeping the weight off is th3 difficulty, not losing it. My body is always trying to get back to its natural weight which is around 10.5 stone and puts me in the overweight category. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life worrying about everything that goes on my mouth.

Emonade · 22/07/2025 22:45

AntiquePenguin · 22/07/2025 18:15

If you can post those two sentences, you can post the two numbers that would describe your BMI.

Why?! Fuck off would be the more appropriate response from OP

Deap · 22/07/2025 22:44

Good for you OP. I’m normal weight, but i still feel like I could lose weight. Trouble is, I used to diet so much, I was constantly cold, and cross. I was miserable from age 16 to probably 34. It was all down to societal pressures, and a fat phobic mother. What a waste of my time, and my talents, and my 20s!. All focussed on being thin. You carry on, and enjoy the strength you get from being you.

Spaglasagneaise · 22/07/2025 22:43

IShouldNotCoco · 22/07/2025 21:54

Not really. Why is it shallow to not enjoy being overweight? It doesn’t suit me. As has been said, some people carry weight much better than others.

Your choice of wording, especially the part about how you are good looking and would be invisible if you gain weight.

blubberball · 22/07/2025 22:42

I'm fat and I decided to be happy about it. It was fine for a while, but now I have type 2 diabetes and it's not fun. I've lost 30lbs so far, but still need to lose another 41lbs. Health is so important, and I really struggle to lose weight

Pistachiocake · 22/07/2025 22:41

I would hate to be as angry as you! Imagine getting that angry!

Do you have anger issues. You can get therapy for that.

@everythingsnotmadeofgold are you always so vile?

ASimpleLampoon · 22/07/2025 22:34

I spent 20 years on various diets always miserable. Menopause h as hit, I've gone from pear shape to Apple shape. I found it so hard to shift even a few pounds.

Decided to just enjoy life now. That was two years ago no regrets.

AngelicKaty · 22/07/2025 22:33

WestSussexWitch · 22/07/2025 22:24

YANBU op, I’m 5,3 and a year ago I weighed 10,4. I had lovely full boobs and a big round bum, I’m under 9 stone now and feel like I’ve been deflated. I was much happier and confident with my old body.

So, if you don't mind me asking, why did you lose weight? 10st 4lbs at 5' 3" gives you a BMI of 25.5 - only just into the overweight range. I'm half an inch taller than you and 10.4 is my ideal weight (in that I look and feel great) and at 9.5 stone I looked gaunt so I can understand why you'd be unhappy at 9st.

PersephonePomegranate · 22/07/2025 22:32

FFS, OP has already explained why she feels like she should diet, but she clearly doesn't enjoy it and feels liberated by accepting herself as she is. What's so terrible about that?

Nobody should be made to feel miserable or less than becasue of a number on a scale and nobody should base their self esteem on it either - you never know what's around the corner and what medications might fuck your metabolism up.

Be happy and enjoy your summer, OP. I'd think about maintaining your current weight, or only losing to the top end of your healthy BMI if you still wish to in September, don't make yourself miserable!

TipsyFairyHicHicHic · 22/07/2025 22:30

Life is TOO SHORT to worry about being thin. You can be happy and overweight - I'm living proof.

Being overweight to the point of being obese shortens your life.

Please stop these comments that people can be obese and happy.
Being obese is a time bomb.

Sooner or later obesity leads to diabetes, amputations, cancer, heart disease and hip replacements.

The NHS is staggering under the pressure from the epidemic of obesity.

People are not advocating being 'thin' (we're now into Thin Shaming) but being a sensible weight and not heading into life threatening disease that's bankrupting the NHS.

LessOfThis · 22/07/2025 22:30

everythingsnotmadeofgold · 22/07/2025 19:07

Because it makes a huge difference. If someone is 5 foot 9 and a size 16 and someone is 5 foot 2 and a size 16.

Well sure but it’s still none of your business how tall I am! I’m fit and healthy and you’ll just have to take my word for it instead of judging 🤷🏻‍♀️

Princessfluffy · 22/07/2025 22:29

Size 16 is very normal for the UK.
It is also enough to raise your risk for a fair few health conditions unfortunately.

DollydaydreamTheThird · 22/07/2025 22:29

IShouldNotCoco · 22/07/2025 22:15

Don’t you have to take it all the time though?

Can you visit the GP and they will just prescribe it for you? I know someone who said that her 23 year old daughter just got it prescribed for her and the practitioner lied and said her BMI was higher than it was so that she could get it?

Most of my friends pay for it privately. Yes you have to stay on it or inevitably you'll put weight on if you haven't changed your lifestyle. You can get it on the NHS but there are criteria. Have a Google. I think at the moment the criteria is very strict in terms of BMI and medical comorbidities like diabetes/hypertension etc otherwise they would have to fund half the country taking it.

stinkycatbum · 22/07/2025 22:26

sometimes I think shape matters more. I’ve seem slightly chubby people who have a lovely shape and clothes look fabulous on them compared to some thinner people who are thin but dont necessarily have a great shape. I think a person’s shape makes a lot of difference, regardless of weight.

Mydogiscuter · 22/07/2025 22:26

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 18:05

I feel great!

I have a fat friend and he said that he feels fat and happy

I know that society frowns on being "overweight" but we are all shapes and sizes.

64% of adults in the UK are overweight or obese. Society should frown on it - it costs us a fortune in public services. Not only the direct costs of treatment for weight related health conditions but also the indirect costs associated with time off work etc due to this.

I am not overweight but my weight varies and I sometimes hover just around the upper level of a healthy BMI. It has a huge impact on my mental and physical wellbeing. I feel generally shit about myself but actually it seems to have a significant interplay withy hormones. The heavier I am, the worse my symptoms of PMS. My joints ache more, my sleep is impacted and my immune response to allergies is greater.
