I'm 47, been working for 31 years.. private sector, public sector and not-for-profit sector; all have their pros and cons.

My only advice is to not stay in one particular job for more than 7-10 years absolute max. I've seen people make this mistake and stay too long, even if they started loving their job, they end up being taken for granted and feeling dissatisfied, then the resentment kicks in and the emp'ee/emp'er relationship breaks down.. then they get managed out or redundant, or they become too old to get the step-up they were waiting for, or too frightened to work somewhere new because their skills became out dated. Don't become jaded and work yourself obsolete, your employer won't care about all those years of loyal service.

If you've realised it's time to move on, do it now. You need a new challenge to keep your skills fresh. Also, get a stocks & shares LISA and start making your retire early fund now.

I agree with this. I am over state pension age and don't need to work but I want to. I enjoy the work and like the people that I work with. However I have changed carers several times and with with one employer worked on a series of short term projects. This has meant that I have never got bored.

LBFseBrom · 22/07/2025 16:52

I am sorry. I can imagine many have felt the same at times.

Could it be your particular job, might you be happier doing something else? You are young, assess all your options. I couldn't have carried on working if I was unhappy, I'd look for another job. However take your time, make sure (or as sure as you can be), that you go for something that suits you in all respects; travel and hours, etc.

Good luck.

Nhs or teacher?

SquadGoals75 · 22/07/2025 16:47

We’re allowed to have a moan. It’s therapeutic. I bloody despise my job but I’m trapped by the pension. It’s a good one and can’t be transferred anywhere else otherwise I’d be off like a shot.

Cososom · 22/07/2025 16:44

I see the usual suspects are out in force today. FYI, an awful lot of jobs are pointless and unfulfilling. It's not lazy or skiving or feminism-gone-mad to recognise this.

OP, I recomnend Bullshit Jobs by the late great David Graeber. It won't solve your immediate problem, but it's a good antidote to the tedious neoliberal tosh spouted on here so often when this kind of topic comes up.

Richiewoo · 22/07/2025 16:41

Tough shit its a necessary evil. Find a job you'd enjoy and quit moaning.

Doitrightnow · 22/07/2025 16:41

Me too.

I went down to a 4 day week as soon as I possibly could (at 30) and a three day week at 37.

I subsidised my income by renting out my spare room to a good friend. DH and I still rent out the spare room now, which allows me to be a sahm (which I love).

I pretend to think about returning to work when dc starts school, but I really don't want to.

Maybe I'd feel differently if my job mattered, but it was really just pointless paper shuffling.

mamagogo1 · 22/07/2025 16:39

countin down now, 3.5 more years to get my full ni paid (35 years) then I’m quitting. We chose a smaller aka cheaper house to retire early, dh has already retired, he’s older

A lot of folk don't like working. That's what benefits are for and why the country is heading for disaster.

Lots of people come on here to complain they are fed up with parenting. But noone replies to say, that's what fostering is for, give up your child to the council and it'll be their problem now
Benefits are clearly designed for those who can't work. Yes there are some people playing the system, but I think far less than people make out.

People are allowed to say they find something in there lives a bit shit and complain , even if it's necessary and they'll carry on doing it regardless

Flumpflimpo · 22/07/2025 16:37

I dont so much hate working. But i hate the feeling of being trapped in one place.

I want to go for a week to france, belgijm, spain, austria.

I need to look for a remote E.U. job.

CoraPirbright · 22/07/2025 16:36

Def have a serious think about what you could change to make you happier. I have been in jobs I loathed (to the extent of being tearful on Sunday evenings at the thought of another working week) and I absolutely understand how you feel.

However , I am in a job I adore now and skip into the office!! My actual job is interesting but I think it’s the people that make a big difference too. Nice colleagues are vital.

Keepgettingolder81 · 22/07/2025 16:35

They're the lazy fucks and a separate issue altogether. Also, that isn't what benefits are for.

Most people accept they have to work, doesn't mean they have to like it though.

Westfacing · 22/07/2025 16:34

The OP has certainly struck a chord with her thread title!

Cavalierchaos · 22/07/2025 16:34

I felt the same, until I went very part time (possible because I'm very frugal, no kids, and earnt 40-50k full time). Now I kinda look forward to work as it gets me out of the house!

shortoedtreecreeper · 22/07/2025 16:29

You need to find a career you like.It is possible to change your career and your job. Then you won't feel so bad.
You've got to do.something about it you're young enough to change, well it's always possible.

Stupid responses from @SeaShellsSanctuary1 & @FranzXaverSuss

I have to work I just hate it

Do a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life……..time to make a career move perhaps?!?!

JLou08 · 22/07/2025 16:27

Me too. I haven't always hated it but this year so far has been incredibly stressful. I'm anxious every morning about having to go. I've been looking at other jobs but I have a disabled child, live in a dead end town and have no family support. My current manager is very supportive and understanding and I'm not sure I'd get that anywhere else so feel quite trapped.

Summerartwitch · 22/07/2025 16:27

I have to come to realise that what I hate is the office environment and the constraint of a 9 to 5 job.

I don't mind the actual work itself but I can't deal anymore with the endless politics, poor management, unrealistic workloads, pointless meetings and HR initiatives and the back-stabbing colleagues and the lack of support from employers for flexible working/home working or part-time working. Not to mention that the UK wages are no longer attractive or keeping up with inflation.

In contrast I also do freelance work and I really enjoy that because it is much more flexible and interesting and it makes me come in contact with a wider range of people, rather than the same already mentioned back stabbing colleagues every day...

As a person with a long term health condition I am also done with employers who think that disabled employees are a nuisance.

So I am at a stage where I am doing everything I can to just be self-employed to cut out some of the bullshit and to manage my health condition better.

ThejoyofNC · 22/07/2025 16:08

Blame feminism

Why? If feminism wasn't a thing, we'd probably be a home hating our lives because we couldn't leave abusive husbands. I wouldn't have been able to get a mortgage on my own, feminism isn't the problem

CeeJay81 · 22/07/2025 16:15

I hate working full time but unfortunately I can't afford to go part time. I think working part time that would be ideal. If I won the lottery, I'd probably volunteer or something to give me routine and feel useful.

Laboheme78 · 22/07/2025 16:14

But do you hate working because you are lazy?

Or do you (just) hate your job because it’s dull/badly paid/miserable colleagues/doesn’t fit round family time?

One can be fixed, the other will be harder…

Juniperberry55 · 22/07/2025 16:12

ilovesooty · 22/07/2025 16:08

Have you posted this before? There was a fairly recent thread from a 35 year old who hated working.

Or it could just be that alot of people in their 30s are knackered and fed up of work when they know how far retirement is. And they are likely to change the goal posts anyway, We've got another 30 something years to go and we're currently due to retire at 68 but let's face it , they may move the age up to 70,75,80, they might even just remove the age cap and you might only get to retire if signed off by a doctor, who knows

CherryYellowCouch · 22/07/2025 16:12

GreenGully · 22/07/2025 15:53

If a person can't figure out what to do with their time aside from work (especially if they have plenty of money) they must be as boring as hell.

I think they really missed the social interaction apart from anything else.

And yes, there are other ways to achieve that but they chose to return to work.
