To ask if you believe you’ve lived a luckier life than most?

Whether it’s down to circumstances, timing, support, or sheer chance - do you ever stop and think, “I’ve had it easier than others?” Or do you believe we mostly make our own luck?

I used to think that I was generally very lucky in life. Don't take it for granted. It only took one day in my early 40s for it to all fall apart, and spent the two years after that with it getting progressively worse. I have now been through more than most will endure in a life time in the space of 8 years. I appreciate the good times I had even more now as a result though.

So your contention is that the UK has done nothing to benefit the world?

The UK has done a lot of damage to many countries in the rest of the world.

Gowlett · 22/07/2025 23:03

Sheer luck. I’m a glass half full person, as well.
I had a happy childhood too, which really helps.
I don’t have much, but don’t want more than this.
Life’s been good so far, I’ve mostly had a laugh!

Nannerlmoz · 22/07/2025 22:59

Do you take a similar line with France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and any other colonial power? Or just UK?

Yes i do of course. You are deflecting. Why?

We are talking about the UK on this thread.

Its not correct to say "i was lucky to be born in the UK"

The correct thing to say is "i benefiitted from my ancestors plundering and colonising people".

Of course.

Like colonialism and slavery?

"Brought benefits to other countries."

Really? What a whitewashed version of history.

The U.K. did a huge amount of damage to other countries.

And the UK also brought a lot of benefits to other countries and the world more generally. You know, just for balance.

BoudiccaRuled · 22/07/2025 22:51

Lucky to have been born in a developed country with free education.

Also I dont think we should say we are lucky to be born in the UK, and not born in other countries, when the UK caused a lot of problens in many other countries. That is extremely insensitve.

We should be saying: our ancestors benefitted from colonising other countries.

How can we help those other countries now.

Fairyladyonwheels · 22/07/2025 22:02

No luck what so ever. I honestly think wtf is the point of life.
Born into severe poverty, alcoholic dad, awful childhood. It was just crap.
This statement "the harder you work, the luckier you are" is a load of bs. I have worked extremely hard and no luck from it what so ever. I know plenty of people who do nothing and get everything in life! Great family, money, head start is what I call lucky.

Awful miscarriage. Parents wanting to kill themselves, stress beyond imagination. Struggle all through life. My sister wanted to kill herself which a therapist said it was due to her childhood.
Many friends I know are lucky to have parents help them, give them money and be there for them - nothing to do with hardworking.
House flooded and the plumber said it was bad luck. No support to sort it.
Watching a positive and lovely family member die of cancer in a horrific way has given me a reality check to how crap it can be.

I am due for some good luck for a change.
How I am not on antidepressants I do not know! Life is very unfair and I am quite bitter with how life has treated me.

Well you are welcome to start a thread asking that question if you like.

Grapewrath · 22/07/2025 18:15

Yes I’m so lucky
From the outside people probably look at my life and think I’m not- I had an awful and neglectful upbringing, abusive relationships as a young women and as an adult, I’ve had severe financial difficulties and have a child with disabilities. And yet, I have overcome so much, fostered healthy relationships, got myself an education and career that I love. I live in a council house but it’s a beautiful cottsge by the sea. I really believe everything has worked out so well for me against the odds and even at my lowest, I found something to be grateful for.

You seem very focussed on things being insensitive. The original post asks if you consider yourself lucky. You seem determined to criticise those who have been lucky for not showing empathy and now we should self flagellate due to the awful actions of our ancestors.
Both things can be true: I recognise that I am lucky by virtue of the country I was born in and can recognise that others have been unlucky.

Oh now you're just being ridiculous. It's just shorthand for being born in a relatively prosperous nation. It's not propaganda to suggest that bring born in the UK is luckier than being born in Yemen or Afghanistan. Prople aren't literally saying that living in the UK is luckier than anywhere else. But you know that.

Taking one other country as an example. Our neighbouring country.

How is being born in the U.K luckier than being born in the republic of Ireland?

Ireland are doing much better economically than the U.K is.
Irish people have complete freedom of movement to live in any E.U country that they want.
People in the U.K. cannot do that.

are You deliberately being obtuse?

You wrote

"Being born into the UK is very much a winning ticket in the uterus lottery."

Wow. That is a bit scary.

Do you ever think that you have been completelty brainwashed by U.K. propoganda, to see the U.K as better than everywhere else?

This my personal experience. It doesn’t mean that I’m have been brainwashed or that I think the uk is the best country in the world. note I said a winning ticket, not the only winning ticket.
I have lived in five countries and with four of the five they would also be a winning lottery ticket. The fifth has many more challenges.

Financially yes ( inheritance in my 20s from grandparents meant I was mortgage free & comfortable from then on in )
health wise yes , but I haven’t been lucky in love .
I’m a firm believer that nobody has all their ducks in a row though .

I don’t see any bragging, rather acknowledgement that people are lucky to have been born in a country with political stability, free education, free health care at the point of delivery and have an income which, on a global scale, makes them rich. Being born into the UK is very much a winning ticket in the uterus lottery.

That doesn’t negate the experiences of posters who have some awful experiences. I can appreciate my ‘luck’ and realise that not everyone is as ‘lucky’.

Also, all of the posters on here who wrote that they are extremely lucky just because they live in the U.K. are a bit scary.

It is like they have been brainwashed by propoganda.

It reminds me of when I talked to this woman from the UsA.

She told me that from a young age in the USA, they are taught to believe that the USA is the best country in the world,
and that anywhere outside the U.S.A is an absolute shithole.

She said that it was only when she was older and left the USA, and visited other countries that she realised it wasn't true.

I don't see much empathy towards other people's bad circumstances on here.

It is more bragging posts about how great their own lives are.

I have lived in other countries, and I think that the U.K. is behind other countries in lots of ways.

I have lived in five counties including the UK and the UK is ahead of many places.

ladyofshertonabbas · 22/07/2025 14:46

I do feel lucky but when I think about it I wonder if that's true. Anyway, after a shaky first 40 years life is on track, so am glad of that.
