Adult lazy day

Is it socially acceptable for an adult to have a ‘lazy day’
For context I am a single with parental responsibility 70% of the time, plus I work full time. Due to the summer holidays my DC are with their dad more this weekend. I have completed house hold task this morning and now I am sitting in front of the telly. However I feel guilty in doing so.
I would like to go and do something but I’m short on funds.
House is clean
House and garden all tidy apart from DC bedroom which they refused to tidy.

YABU- get off your bum and do something
YANBU- it’s okay to have a lazy day every now and again

I’m knackered. Fully scooped out after some stressful times lately.
If I don’t have a restful day, I won’t cope with work next week.
So I stayed in bed until noon and am now watching telly.
Wellbeing is very important as are reset days.

ReturnsAdministrator · 20/07/2025 15:39

I work Monday to Friday, 8:30 till 5pm.
My weekends are made up of one day housework and shopping, the other day either going out with family or doing very little.
We all deserve a day of wind down time.
Enjoy your day.

catherinewales · 20/07/2025 15:39

It’s only acceptable if you’re in pjs too. Enjoy op. Us parents don’t often get days like this so enjoy it xx

WeeHighlandCoo · 20/07/2025 15:34

Absolutely! I’m 38, my kids are 22 & 17, I’ve got a stressful job and purposefully made no plans this weekend so I could laze about, nap etc as much as I wanted. Ordered takeaway for tea, had incredible sexy time with hubs and I feel like a new woman today 😁

pincklop · 20/07/2025 05:01

There’s always another job to do even if you don’t stop 24/7, but priority is balance. Work. Rest. Go out. Do what you want. It’s your life you have to live it not just exist

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 20/07/2025 04:49

I selected YABU because:

why are you calling it that?
who needs to know what you’re doing?
you are not a skivvy with a list of work house chores.
i did fuck all yesterday! Call it what you like but it was very relaxing (hence why I’m awake so bloody early).

Noshadelamp · 20/07/2025 01:21

Of course it's okay, we're not actually machines although it does feel like it in this crazy late stage capitalist society.

Btw, it's not being lazy, it's being human, recharging, resting, decompressing, enjoying life.

Dancingintherainxxx · 20/07/2025 01:03

Lazy day = recharging the body

gamerchick · 20/07/2025 00:53

Doing nothing is important on occasion. Me and husband work 6 days so Sundays are set in stone for chilling and pottering.

ComemosZanahorias · 20/07/2025 00:45

I’m 100% single parent and work full time from home. One day at the weekend to lie in bed until at least 10am (let the dog out for a wee in the garden at 7) is an absolute must for me. Today I stayed in bed until noon but I was on my feet from then until 10pm doing housework and laundry and building ikea furniture and making food, walking the dog. It’s absolutely vital for my mental health that I get time to rest every week, moreso as I have elderly and ill parents to run around after as well. Tomorrow I plan to be up at 8, walk the dog, clean the house, do mine and my parents’ shopping, make Sunday dinner for us all and walk the dog again (DS will do lunchtime walk as he will be at his grandparents’ house from about noon). It’s a fucking hamster wheel and even hamsters are allowed to chill for a bit.

CanIJustReadMyBookPls · 20/07/2025 00:34

Of course it is, if you need it. I think most people call them mental health days now. Sometimes you just need a day to chill with a book and step away from the stresses you can escape. It's what prevents burnout.

Chicheguevara · 19/07/2025 23:46

I had one today. I walked the dogs and did the vacuuming. I also read, made myself food, read some more and did a puzzle. It’s been great.

I have a ‘non achievement day’ every so often. It’s good for the soul.

ladyinwaiting99 · 19/07/2025 23:21

Everybody needs to rest, it’s completely acceptable but I’m with you though Op, I always feel guilty when I have a rest day.

notanothersummercold · 19/07/2025 22:55

My dh is away for a few days, dd breaks up from.m school so on my day off before she finishes school and he gets back, l have booked myself a spa day! Haven't told a soul in case they try and invite themselves along!

No guilt here!

This made me laugh.
What do non working people actually do all day?

can't speak for all 'non-working' people. But as a 'non-worker' (due to being a carer for my disabled son) and my own disability.

Typical SAHM stuff with extras. Housework, cooking, gardening.
I also look after my mum
So.. admin, finances, and all that stuff for my own life, my kids lives, and her life.
I'm also the family Taxi, so taking Mum, myself, and my kids to all their appointments, medical & mundane. I also help out my ExH if he is at work and needs a hand with deliveries for his side hustle.
I take mum to do the shopping.

I do this while in chronic pain, and running on average 4/5 hours sleep.

Today is the first day in a month i haven't had something to do or somewhere to go or somewhere to be for one or the other of us. I'm mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted... so having a 'lazy day' myself.

I'm not saying all this to have a go btw.. but to point out that even 'not-working- people can be busy with life and also deserve a 'lazy day' as much as working folk.

cgiwaly · 19/07/2025 22:21

This is something I struggled with. I always felt guilty about hanging around the house doing fuck all. I was constantly putting myself under pressure to go out and DO something, anything. But actually, sometimes what I need to do is absolutely fucking nothing. I've reframed my thinking. I don't feel guilty any more because when I feel like hanging around doing nothing and watching Netflix all day, that's because that's my body's way of saying it needs a rest and to chill out.
Also, I've paid a fuck ton of money over the years for this house and I'm paying bills every month to be able to live in this house so I should at least occasionally enjoy just sitting in the house I am paying for, doing nothing

Having an hour in the evening after a busy day is one thing. A whole day is not something I’ve done apart from when poorly which is very rare.
Maybe I have some issues, but I have received some validation on this thread.

I am genuinely astonished that anyone lives like this. Not in a snarky way, but the idea of never having had a chill do nothing day EVER is unimaginable to me. I’d be incredibly stressed.

AhBiscuits · 19/07/2025 22:10

I do this once a week and feel zero guilt. I need it.

Absentmindedsmile · 19/07/2025 22:07

Have as many lazy days as you like. Have them Even if the washing hasn’t all been done / floors hoovered / etc. It’s a revelation..

You’re an adult and that is the whole joy of being an adult! If you need reassuring then just think of the millions of dossers on benefits who live like that every day.. you’re only doing it occasionally!

This made me laugh.

Why do people feel the need to be endlessly doing something? Just being is really enjoyable. Watch TV. Stare at birds in the garden. Have a bath and a nap and read a pageturner. I do this at least once a week.

WhineAndWine1 · 19/07/2025 21:44

I don’t believe anyone feels this guilty for doing nothing. You are an adult do what ever you want

ProfessionalWhimsicalSkidaddler · 19/07/2025 21:35

You have a problem if this is even a question. I have at least one lazy day a week and as much time in the evenings as I can. Why wouldn’t you? Who is going to judge it and why would you care?

wasting time isn’t wasted time or something.
