Adult lazy day

Is it socially acceptable for an adult to have a ‘lazy day’
For context I am a single with parental responsibility 70% of the time, plus I work full time. Due to the summer holidays my DC are with their dad more this weekend. I have completed house hold task this morning and now I am sitting in front of the telly. However I feel guilty in doing so.
I would like to go and do something but I’m short on funds.
House is clean
House and garden all tidy apart from DC bedroom which they refused to tidy.

YABU- get off your bum and do something
YANBU- it’s okay to have a lazy day every now and again

Have a lazy day. I had overnight guests that left at lunchtime. House is clean and tidy. I closed the spare room doors and sat on the sofa. Been playing computer games for hours now.

enjoy. I am really busy for next few weekends so loving my time alone

Summerlovin24 · 20/07/2025 19:03

This is why mums burn out. We feel guilty for sitting down. If you need a sit down embrace it and relax. Your body is telling you that you need it.

VictoriaEra · 20/07/2025 18:54

Completely understand, op. I grew up in a house where we’d get shouted at if we were caught sitting down when mum got in from work. We were school kids on the school holiday.
i have a house of my own, three adult children that live with me and I still apologise if I get caught sitting down.

restingbitchface30 · 20/07/2025 18:46

As a mum of 3 year old twins I’m envious of anyone having lazy days. With that in mind have one for me too!

Miaminmoo · 20/07/2025 18:26

I’m did sweet FA last Sunday as me and DH were feeling a little jaded after a day out with friends the day before. My DC are older so I did a bit of driving about for them and provided food but literally the bare minimum and I didn’t feel guilty at all.

Anon9898 · 20/07/2025 18:22

I would have a bath in peace without any interruption. Maybe a face mask and then sit in front of TV with no kids fighting for the remote. Then I might do a bit of knitting

ConnieHeart · 20/07/2025 18:12

I would find it hard to have a whole day of laziness but only because I'm so used to having little ones to look after. But now they're older I frequently sit in the garden with a coffee & my book in between "pottering" around. Go for it I say!

harriethoyle · 20/07/2025 18:08

@BulbsAndLampsDiffer DH said to me this morning “I’m so looking forward to having a lazy day today”. Aside from a couple of loads of washing and a quick batch cook for the freezer (15 minutes of prep/assembly), we’ve done nothing we didn’t want to do! Golf on tv for DH, dog walk, gym and book for me. Accompanied by wine. Pizza incoming. Enjoy your lazy day with the thread’s collective permission!!

BountifulPantry · 20/07/2025 17:58

Sit on your fat arse is one of life’s great joys.

hollyblueivy · 20/07/2025 17:46

Rest is a form of self care and highly recommended here!

JJMama · 20/07/2025 17:45

Of course it’s perfectly fine. You don’t need to ask anyone about this. People are too caught up in ‘busy work’ because they think this makes them righteous. It doesn’t.

You do not need to prove yourself to anyone. Your house is tidy and clean - great. Even if it wasn’t doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some downtime. Put your feet up and enjoy the tv!!

Nevertooearlyforsanta · 20/07/2025 17:40

Blimey, all weekend is lazy days for me, and any time I’m not working really. That said, my house isn’t a hovel, but unlikely to meet some people’s standards.

Life is too short to worry about doing things that bring you joy….if that’s watching tv whilst you mindlessly scroll then good on you!

In the long run. Your lazy day is good for your wellbeing, both emotional and physical!

Rewis · 20/07/2025 17:23

I'm not even sure what is a lazy day. What are adults supposed to be doing?

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 20/07/2025 17:20

This is a massive level of overthinking. It's your life, your home, you're an adult. Do whatever you want! Absolutely no-one cares.

soiledblogg · 20/07/2025 17:06

Sunday is a day of rest . I think it was the worst thing ever when Sunday opening was allowed. Germany shuts down on a Sunday except for vital services. It hasn’t done Germany any harm .

lazyarse123 · 20/07/2025 17:04

Ywbu to not do it. I have been retired for 9 months and dh finished work due to his health 15 years ago. I take every opportunity to do nothing. I worked for 50 years and brought up 3 children so now if I don't want to clean the bathroom I don't. Life is too short and hectic to dedicate down time to chores.
Dh does occasionally have a little dig "ooh you're always on your tablet" and I'm not polite when I answer so fucking what? I don't know what he thinks i should be doing because i don't ask. He does clean too BTW so I don't know what his issue is.

I recently got a Garmin fitness tracking watch and surprised to realise that the single biggest thing I could do to improve my health was to get more rest.

So I would say that having a lazy day isn't just not a bad thing to do, but can actually be pretty vital to your health, fitness and productivity.

I'm looking at getting an Apple Watch, but actually, I like the sound of your garmin!!

Cucy · 20/07/2025 16:56

I try and have one at least once a month.

I work hard and pay my bills.
Why should I feel guilty for having a day to myself (although I do sometimes).

I watch crap Tv, eat junk, play PlayStation, read my book, look up holidays, come on MN etc.

mumda · 20/07/2025 16:53

I didn't get out of bed til 12.30 today.
I am running a temperature though. Normally I'd have got up on a Sunday by about 11.30.

mamagogo1 · 20/07/2025 16:52

Totally fine, I’ve only been home today

SummerCanDoOne · 20/07/2025 16:46

You're way ahead of me...I've got another day and half to crawl through until the end of term...😱😵‍💫😴

Yesterday I cleaned out two kitchen cupboards, did a weeks laundry and visited my elderly mum, then got a takeaway. Today I've had a bath and brunch, faffed on my phone (planning all the stuff I want/need to do in the holidays) and had a nap.

House and front and back gardens are a shit show. I'm planning to do a few essentials tonight but the rest can wait until Wednesday!

hypnovic · 20/07/2025 16:12

Rest is not lazy it's essential to your wellbeing and that of your children's

Mumgamer · 20/07/2025 16:01

I’m a single mum, get a day off every other weekend. I feel like I should do something fun with it, but it’s only started recently and I’ve been using it to catch up on house admin.
but yesterday I was gloriously lazy!
I had breakfast AND LUNCH in bed! Didn’t get up till 2.

Emmz1510 · 20/07/2025 16:00

Of course it’s not unreasonable! If it is then I have a problem……

everythingsnotmadeofgold · 20/07/2025 15:59

RELISH in it OP.
