To not attend A&E?

PassMeAGripPlease · 18/07/2025 13:56

One foot and leg swelled up completely out of the blue the other night, skin indented when pressed. Saw the GP yesterday morning, they measured and said the leg is 3cm larger than the other due to swelling. Recommend A&E. I didn’t attend as severely anxious around lots of people.
Leg seems to have gone down, no indenting or anything this morning. DH really wants me to get it checked out and is bothering me about it.

AIBU to think it was just something random and that it would be time wasting for me to go to A&E today given the symptoms have gone?

I would speak to your gp and ask him to rule out things going on with your kidneys and your heart

aspirin features nowhere in DVT treatment guidelines. If the d-dimer test is negative then you can be reassured there isn’t a DVT (its main value is when it’s negative). If the d-dimer is positive then a scan may be needed to work out if it’s raised because of a clot or any of the other things that can put it up.

Thanks for this, I am happy to be educated and I’m glad things have improved in terms of diagnosis. My experience was many years back, I was in my early 20’s and I’m in my 50’s now. The diagnostic procedure was absolute brutal (taking blood from my inner thigh) and I’ve never forgotten it. I had a warfarin drip and was in hospital for over a week and on aspirin for a month afterwards. I appreciate your updated knowledge!

As you do not leave the house how much are you moving around? Could it be linked to not being very mobile?

I’d take some aspirin until you can see your GP (as long as you are able to take it of course). I’m actually stunned that they didn’t scan you. Did you not ask any questions?

I don’t feel much reassurance to be honest. I saw the doctor for less than 60 seconds, he just glanced at my legs, went to check blood results and sent me home. He didn’t touch them or say what else might be causing it.

I suppose I’ll just have to go back to the GP when I can manage to go out again.

op, I don’t know your financial situation but I had symptoms and didn’t want to go to A&E (no anxiety but didn’t want to wait. I found a place in London that was doing a Doppler scan, called them and had it done about 25minutes after seeing the GP. It was about £250-300 but well worth it. Is this something you would consider? I can give you the name of clinics, mostly open at the weekend.

Would they still check out the leg even though no symptoms today? I’m absolutely dreading going, especially if I’m just going to wait for 9+hours to be told to go back to GP. Would the swelling have gone if it had been a clot?

It’s worth ringing 111 instead and getting an actual appointment in the hospital? Definitely sounds like you need to get this checked out. Have you been bitten? It could be cellulitis?

anyolddinosaur · 19/07/2025 06:45

You were unreasonable not to go to a&e when your gp wanted you to go and your husband should have been more insistent. But you went, it didnt kill you, you can go the gp again.

Until you have better advice move around when you can and if you have to sit raise your feet. That will reduce the swelling and the risk of skin damage.

lavenderandlemon · 19/07/2025 06:39

Frustrating that you didn't get more from the doctor, but you should be so proud of yourself for going to a&e, well done!

On my way home now. My leg has swollen again but blood test was normal so have been sent home.

Thank you again every one.

Edited

Well done to you - at least you have some reassurance. But a shame it's swollen again Sad

op I'd love to know how you're getting on. That's around 8 hrs from your last msg.

Ok NHS link for signs and the key points

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/deep-vein-thrombosis-dvt/

Symptoms of DVT (deep vein thrombosis)
Symptoms of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) in the leg are:

  • throbbing pain in 1 leg (rarely both legs), usually in the calf or thigh, when walking or standing up
  • swelling in 1 leg (rarely both legs)
  • warm skin around the painful area
  • red or darkened skin around the painful area – this may be harder to see on brown or black skin
  • swollen veins that are hard or sore when you touch them
  • These symptoms can also happen in your arm or tummy if that's where the blood clot is.
TheShadowOfTheWizard · 19/07/2025 02:24

I've been in A and E twice in the past 6 weeks I feel your pain.

Well done for going

We rang an ambulance for a suspected heart attack and were told an ambulance would be hours, and to make our own way there.

Can I recommend keeping 300mg aspirin tablets in. Most people have the 75g.

IOYOYO · 18/07/2025 22:20

well done for getting there @PassMeAGripPlease i hope you’re seen soon

Daysgo · 18/07/2025 22:10

Gemmawemma9 · 18/07/2025 22:02

Op, I’m really glad you went. It took a lot and you’ve done brilliantly. I hope your wait isn’t too long and that everything turns out fine.

BitOutOfPractice · 18/07/2025 21:29

I’m not saying it’s not difficult. I’m saying it’s absolutely imperative.

glad you got there. Hope the wait isn’t too long or busy.

Could you share the signs that you noticed I think I’m in the dark about these.

Sure, I had sudden calf pain, it was red and swollen. I also had chest pressure and breathlessness. I had only read the Cosmo article a few days before and it spooked me so I got on the train home and walked into GP (those were
the days!). Fortunately GP was on the ball
and called ambulance. To be honest the symptoms were not what I would describe as “critical” but I just knew.

NewbieYou · 18/07/2025 20:32

As someone with a severe phobia often the only way to break it is to plough through it OP. My phobia is blood-injection-injury phobia… it would cause me to pass out when someone nearby had a nose bleed I was so terrified. I had a medical issue and had to have so many blood tests… now years on I have to have one every 3 months still. And now, I’m OK. Because I’ve done it so many times, cried, fainted, tried to run away, but did it that eventually your brain says ‘oh, this is ok then I guess’.

You won’t get better by not pushing through the phobia. You must confront it head on over and over and over again even when you can’t think straight you’re so terrified.
