I’m 39, turning 40 at the end of the year.

My husband thinks I’m being ridiculous with what I spend, but we can afford it comfortably and it makes me feel good.

I spend £42 every 3-5 weeks on nails, and every 3 months or so an extra £15 to get my eyebrows waxed and tinted.

i spend £140 every two months on getting my hair extensions moved up, and then every 4 months an extra £77 to get my roots done.

he thinks this is silly money and an extra £110 a month we could be saving, but I work, it’s my only real splurge each month and it makes me feel great. Am I spending too much? How much do you spend?

I don’t get my nails done. I paint them if im going to a wedding etc.
I wax my own brows and my haircut is £37 once every 6 months. I don’t dye it, i’m going grey disgracefully!
However, if that is something you enjoy, its your money to spend as you wish! Does your husband have any hobbies? What does he spend his money on? I don’t think just over £100 a month on self care is bad when it can be comfortably afforded.

Would you say the last lift is worth it? I’m really interested in getting one!

Don't be so ridiculous! Leave your lashes alone, listen to your husband. £110 per month on such nonsense is crazy!!

AlpacaMittens · 17/07/2025 20:22

Hair cut once a year, about £50 I think?
That's it 😬

RoseAlone · 17/07/2025 20:21

I can't believe how much people spend. I spend £52 every 6 weeks for my hair, nothing else.

northernballer · 17/07/2025 20:21

I get my haircut every 8 weeks for £50.

Don't get my nails done, used to have LVL and a facial every 6 weeks but can't afford it now.

I do spend £150 per month in a PT which is more important to me than beauty treatments but you should be able to spend your money on what you like, assuming you both have the same freedom.

NewMrsF · 17/07/2025 20:20

Nails £25 every 2 weeks
lash lift £40 every 6 weeks
Micro needling £100 every 6 months
polynucleotide injections £50 every 3 months

LittlleMy · 17/07/2025 20:20

Make way ladies…52 and £17 every 4m for a dry trim. I believe I can self declare myself as the lowest maintenance?! 😁

Luckily my brows have a defined high arch shaped already so easy to pluck around, for face I use one of those little pens you swipe around, my hair is very fine and thin so colour and highlights are a waste, I touch up my own roots every few weeks. I have very white nail tips so I just put a clear varnish on them and it looks like a natural sort of French manicure.

Just as well, my beauty costs are minimal because I have a mortgaged/car and usual bills etc that I need to pay for as a single person and must admit I find even paying the £17 plus tip to hairdresser annoying 😅

Tryingtobedifferent · 17/07/2025 20:18

About £35 on a hair cut every 18 months or so lol I paint my own nails and shape my own brows. I'm very low maintenance when it comes to beauty

KP93 · 17/07/2025 20:18

He sounds like a ‘see you next Tuesday’ in truth.

Serious question, do you think he’d ‘fancy’ you if you stopped with the beauty stuff?

Part of me things he wants you to stop so you’re not as appealing to other people. The control over finances and not paying for after school clubs etc is really poor behaviour

bettydavieseyes · 17/07/2025 20:17

None. I don't like nails and don't use nail varnish except maybe toes in summer, I cut my own hair and pluck my eyebrows occasionally and that's it. I don't do any other of the stuff either like eating out loads or anything leisure wise that costs money regularly. I like to live frugally. I think £100 a month on beauty is a lot but I would say that in comparison! The only things which cost that sort of money or more in my budget reguarly are bills and food. I tend to spoil people on birthdays and take my kids on holidays but I guess everyone does that!

Tubequeen · 17/07/2025 20:15

Curly hair girl here 👋 £215 every 12 weeks for hair cut and colour (Midlands). YES. Surprisingly, I don't have any of the other stuff but I would if I could afford it 😂

ALJT · 17/07/2025 20:12

Lashes £25 every 2 weeks and nails £30 every 3-5 weeks. Hair £40 every 2 months or so (my friend does it who’s a hairdresser)

I’ve been an associate in a law firm for about two and a half years now. No job progression and the work environment has got worse and worse to the point that I’m leaving to work in the public sector, completely unrelated to law and hoping to work my way up there. I’ll post in relationships now.

I didn’t intend for you to answer, sorry if I confused you. I was trying to highlight the ridiculousness of his stance. You have a real job….

why does he want you to stop taking care of yourself is the bigger question.

Where would this savings be going ?

Sh291 · 17/07/2025 19:44

I only get my hair cut and blow dried every 4-6 months which costs £40.

ZZGirl · 17/07/2025 19:43

Nails - £35 every month
Eyebrows- £5 every month to 6 weeks
Hair - £40 every 2/3 months. More if I get it coloured

EverythingElseIsTaken · 17/07/2025 19:43

If you can afford it then it’s fine.
i don’t have nails, brows, waxing anything like that (i used to have regular Hollywood waxes but haven’t done since my regular lady closed down during the lockdowns).
Hair is 70 ish every 8 weeks or so and every third trip is £120 for some highlights (my hairdresser does then in a way that my roots don’t show).
My big spends are clothes - I think nothing of spending £150 on a dress or £400 on boots. A far cry from our early days when i didn’t buy clothes from one year to the next and when I did it was charity shops and jumble sales!

ChattyChai · 17/07/2025 19:36

Nina1013 · 17/07/2025 18:14

What is your pretend job then? Do you just pretend to do it?

$30 eyelash tint every 6 weeks ish
$200 highlights for hair every 4 months
$50 massage each month
occasional facial

NadjaofAntipaxos · 17/07/2025 19:32

Your husband sounds like a massive dickhead by the way. Why is childcare only enabling YOU to work? What a backwards sexist chauvinist.

Golf course wanker.

NadjaofAntipaxos · 17/07/2025 19:21

£130 every three months on highlights and cut

Do own nails, wax own muff.

£600 every nine - twelve months on getting filler for my lips and marionette lines.(I cannot tell you how much I love this! Money incredibly well spent.) it looks great.

I have an appointment for Botox for forehead and crows feet wrinkles. If I like it, that will be £360. Probably every 4-6 months.

£200 per month on mounjaro. I'm including that here as I'm now a size 10 and was size 18-20 this time last year.

I turned 47 a year ago and I was so down about how I looked and felt. I had a proper "rage against the dying of the light" moment and decided feminism is about doing what makes you happy, not feeling guilty for vanity.

48 next week. I look and feel fantastic as fuck. I am sooooo much happier and healthier. But it has cost a shit load of money in my case to polish this turd 🤣

CaptainSevenofNine · 17/07/2025 18:45

Hair £48 every 10-12 weeks. That’s all.

that’s only a cut and blow dry.

waxymoron · 17/07/2025 18:42

£25 a month on nails £97 every 7 weeks on haircut. That's it!

Confabulations · 17/07/2025 18:33

You need to start this thread again. In Relationships.

This thread is not about hair and nails. It is about an angry and controlling man who doesn't see you as an equal partner. His money is his and your money is his.
Childcare is always a joint expense because the children are joint, unless there is an offset somewhere else - e.g. I paid holiday clubs, husband paid school fees (he paid more, but I earned less, proportionally it balanced). You certainly do not owe him for having his children and being on maternity leave, taking a career hit to allow it. If anything, in a divorce, he would find he owes you for that.

Golf fees are a personal expense, bollocks to the networking, not at 3x a week unless he is also meeting clients, not just other colleagues he can meet with in the office. Beauty stuff is also personal.

Anger at trying to have an open conversation about this is a really, really bad sign. If 20 years on MN is anything to go by, it is time to start lining your ducks up and deciding if this is what you want for yourself.

Sassybooklover · 17/07/2025 18:22

I have a pedicure and manicure probably twice per year (not acrylics)! At around £60 for both, with gel polish. I can't afford to have it done frequently.

Hair every 8 weeks cut/blow-dry £33. Then 4 times per year half a head of highlights £50.

Eyebrow, lip, chin wax every month £16.

I'm low maintenance to be honest!!
