Women punched me on the bus

Bus today, peak hour, lots of people. I managed to get in and was simply standing because all seats occupied. Then, out of nowhere, one lady punched my shoulder (I had cyst removed from my back last Wednesday, almost peed myself from pain as she punched straight to wound). I turned my head around and said- " stop touching me " .And then- suddenly she became so upset as I'm " younger generation ", "have no respect to elderly person ",etc. (She is 50-55years old).
Yes, you should open your mouth and say-" excuse me "!!!! I had no idea who was behind my back as bus was completely packed.

Do you experience something similar, especially in London? Funny thing, I know that lady, she passing my street every morning when I'm leaving for work and I really thinking to tell her off tomorrow as I had to clean my bleeding wound because of her!

You weren't on the 18 by any chance were you (it's notorious for this type of thing)?!

If you are standing with your back to someone who wants to pass then you can have no possible idea that they want you to move. The civilised thing is for them to ask politely.

This happened to me in Waterstones where I was browsing the shelves - quite a normal activity in a bookshop. I was at an island shelf, so the person who wanted to pass could easily have walked around the other way. However that was obviously too much effort. I suddently heard this sarcastic voice saying "Im just waiting for this lady to move so we can get past" I turned to the young man and said "This lady will move when she hears words like excuse me or please. Didnt you parents teach you any social skills sonny?" The young woman with him said "Shes right you know. That was rude." I told her. "If he will speak to a complete stranger like that think how he's going to treat you in a few years time? One to throw back, I think." She rolled her eyes. I hope she dumped him.

GreyBeeplus3 · 05/01/2026 17:10

She's not right is she?
And a public nuisance too
I'd report her, especially as you've seen her floating about and who knows how much she's watched you?

ilovesooty · 20/07/2025 13:39

"post surgery"?

She doesn't even indicate how extensive this surgery was. Cysts are usually removed under local anaesthetic. It's only a minor procedure in most cases.

So a woman punched you and all you said was ‘stop touching me’
I know I sound cynical but that doesn’t seem like an ‘appropriate’ response to a punch.🤷‍♀️

I thought that myself Def a accidental nudge blown out of proportion

You gotta love the casual ageism in Mumsnet

Yeah. Always raises a laugh with the stereotyping. 🙄

Post surgery you would actively pick fights on busses with violent people while already bleeding and in pain from being attacked... clearly you have anger issues and make bad life choices then.

lol. Are you always so funny? 🤣
If I’m punched I’m not going to say ‘stop touching me’. I’m going to give them both barrels. If that makes me a person with anger issues 🤷‍♀️🤣

Must just be me who does then 🤷‍♀️🙊

Edited

Exactly what I said. Even just “ow” … if you’re strong/confident enough to tell someone to stop touching you after they’ve ’punched’ you, I genuinely don’t see why you wouldn’t say ‘ow you punched me/why did you punch me/don’t punch me’ etc 🤷‍♀️

I was hit over the face by a walking stick when I was on a packed bus years ago when I was in my 20s. The old man was sitting down and obviously took issue with me standing close to him. Clearly he wasn't mentally all there but it was so painful and it could have broken my nose. I had a black eye for a week.

I actually cried when it happened it was so sore but unfortunately everyone pretended not to see me. I said to the bus driver he'd hit me with the walking stick and the bus driver told me there was nothing he could do it was busy. I think now in my 40s I'd have really spoken up more and raised merry hell.

Sorry this happened to you @40weeksmummy

Most injured people don't run their gob at someone already aggressive enough to be throwing punches.

'Stop touching me' is a clear boundary, said loud enough to alert others in the area to the situation since OP could was trapped and not leave the area.

What is the right response?

What is she magically meant to say to de-escalate and keep herself safe?

Must just be me who does then 🤷‍♀️🙊

London transport police?

She may have form for this ?!
Awful 👎👎👎

Bus was packed, there was no chance for me to reach the driver. She even got support from other guy and they were both discussing loudly about "rude new generation " until she decided to move upstairs and pushed one more lady.
Luckily, one passenger realised that I'm in pain and offered me a seat.

My god that's awful

A teenager went over to my friends newborn the other day at the bus stop and blew smoke in the baby's face

My friend was to afraid to even react

wtf is wrong with people

This was Brixton (I know it can happen anywhere though)

parsleyeatingbunny · 18/07/2025 17:23

I’m sorry you went through all that but glad it’s been reported. My friend had something similar happen on a bus and I felt so indignant on his behalf!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 17/07/2025 07:54

Were you taking up the whole pavement?
If in a group, you have to leave space for others to walk past without having to ask.

Not ok to shout at a child, but the number of people who have no spatial awareness on pavements can be infuriating.

Nope, not even taking up the whole pavement. But to provide anymore space would mean letting a two year old walk by themselves in front or behind.

RosesAndHellebores · 17/07/2025 08:18

I'm not so sure. DD had a bag stolen on the bus - she didn't notice until it was time to get off. She reported it to the bus company and the police. The CCTV footage was reviewed. The police not only took it seriously but they caught the thief and dd watched the footage and confirmed it was her bag. The thief is being prosecuted.

This took place in the outskirts of SW London, Metropolitan Police.

Yes but having her bag stolen meant that without doubt, a crime was committed.

Telling the police you were punched in the back on a crowded bus, will very likely lead to them thinking it might've been accidental.

Or at least extremely difficult to prove so not worth their time.

JSMill · 17/07/2025 16:08

You must report her.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/07/2025 15:45

legolegoeverywhereandnotadroptodrink · 17/07/2025 14:33

Stop her tomorrow. Say you’re considering reporting her for assault. Hopefully she apologises and learns a hard lesson

interacting with this person seems like a bad idea. I’d guess the chances of an apology are way less than further abuse of some sort. The op should leave it to the police now.

party4you · 17/07/2025 15:05

@MyrtlethePurpleTurtle are you going to call out @Colliemad79 ’s blatant ageism? Or does it not matter since she’s being ageist to the younger generation?

I just came back from A&E as GP nurse couldn't help me and my wound had to be stitched again.
I contacted police already and gathering all medical evidence. I'm just wondering about the time frame as I understand they keep CCTV records only for few days. I was contacted by officer and waiting for appointment. They are quite busy at our area, so I think it will be not earlier than next week.
Thank you everyone who helped me with support and advice.
Despite the fact that lots of people here think I'm being silly, overreacting, etc - even staff at hospital told me to report that person.

Absolutely report it

On Sunday we caught the train from Liverpool and were changing at Bristol. There was a lovely old lady who told us she had Parkinsons and her travel assist hadn’t turned up so we promised we would get her luggage off the train and ours she could walk but wasn’t stable and had sticks. I went first with my rucksack on as it pulled into Bristol TM, down to the doors and DH followed. Mary was by the doors. By the doors was a lovely lad with a bike who said to Mary to hold his bike handlebars if she needed. Meanwhile a man has pushed past DH and is at the doors twice he pushes through the doors into the bit where the outside doors are and twice pushes me twice forwards into the bike. Twice I turn around and say the doors aren’t open yet and you are hurting me. Mary and nice young guy with bike - he helps her off. I’m behind. Then the same guy hits me again on the back of the legs with his suitcase this time I turn around and said ‘That’s the third time you have assaulted me I have no where to go every time you hit my legs with your suitcase it has left a mark and will bruise later - back the F off or you won’t be going anywhere as I will ring the police and have you arrested is that clear’ I was shaking and burst into tears after and he said ‘I thought you were moving forward’ I said I have got nowhere to go the first two times the doors were shut this time the doorway is blocked by a bike and passenger- I can’t get off. I still don’t think he got it - but I don’t think he would of done the same to a man. DH glared at him. Wanker.
