DP angry with me over University Challenge

Teachingquestion · 16/07/2025 07:29

I wish I was joking.
I don't really care about university challenge at all. DP likes it. He watches it and tries see how many he can score. Normally I am just sitting there/having a cuppa , watching rather than answering all the questions. I just don't find quizzes that interesting. Last night, he asked me to join in. I did and I got double his amount of points. He said "oh for fucks sake don't win now just because you've decided to "
I know this sounds really trivial, but he had this look of absolute disdain on his face. Like a deep resentment. I am intelligent and in a good job that uses it, but I was only able to do that due to a good school being concerned with social mobility. My parents are intelligent but undereducated (again social mobility issues) I have friends of all types of intelligence and although I'm proud of my achievements, it's not the biggest thing for me. Also whisper I don't think university challenge is that hard, most of the time it's quite general knowledge put in a wordy question.
Dunno what my AIbU is really, just want a rant!

It was his face , he was really disdainful. I'm proud of being clever (for myself not judged against others) and I feel proud as my mum is cleverer than me and was not encouraged at all, so has no qualifications and I feel so grateful she pushed me to not be in the same position as her. She's a cleaner and people think she's thick

This is me and my dad. I'm so grateful for his encouragement.

Please keep an eye on your partner going forward. Never make yourself smaller for some man's fragile ego.

You showed your true colors too early.

Should have had some sort of bet, whoever wins does the housework for the whole of the next week. That would have really annoyed him.

Let's face it though, it's pretty annoying for anyone if they think that they are really good at something, then someone shows up who they think they should be easily able to beat but they end up being thrashed by. Maybe a little sympathy is in order and hopefully he can grow up a bit.

And also to piss on both your fires, being able to regurgitate lots of random facts is not a great definition of "clever". Someone with a good memory who is really stupid could do that.

I know what you’re saying, although a memory that good would be an asset in itself, but I also think that knowing a variety of facts like that will usually be part of a wider intelligence. It shows that someone had the curiosity and wide reading to acquire the knowledge in the first place. Also in many cases memory is aided by a level of understanding.

I love learning for its own sake and this thread has reminded me of my book. When I was younger, mum took us to the library a lot and I had a little notebook that if I saw something on telly , or there was a reference in a book I was reading that I wanted to know more about/a famous painting mentioned that I wanted to look up etc or a piece of music , I would write it in my notebook and go and then go to the library and look everything up and make notes. This will age me but I remember looking up every reference In that song "we didn't start the fire" (after taping it off the radio and slowly copying it out having no idea how to spell half of it 😀 )

The modern day equivalent is reading on Kindle but constantly googling things, eg does that place really exist. Takes me twice the time to read a book!
I have what even I call a dustbin memory, I can recall the weirdest facts. My late OH and I used to watch Countdown, yes I'm very old, and he got really frustrated if I claimed a long word before the 30 seconds were up, it 'put him off' apparently.

Flatulence · 16/07/2025 12:40

Your partner sounds like a twat. You don't have to justify doing well in a quiz and it's utterly ridiculous for him to be annoyed at you.
Fwiw, my partner is a real polymath (he has Asperger's which I believe may be somewhat responsible!) and is insanely bright. And I still sometimes beat him in UC. It just depends on the questions; it's all meaningless.

I think it's good women are proud of their intelligence.

Too many mediocre men still succeed based on society's enduring preference for men, it's time women know their worth.

FfaCoff · 16/07/2025 07:49

Asking you to join in and then saying 'don't win now because you've decided to' is so bloody stupid. No wonder you beat him.

Exactly?! What does that even mean? If you know the answers, you know the answers. Were you supposed to decide not to win?

It seems somewhat odd to me that a grown man is even this interested in tracking his own answers, but I could get on board with that…you know, fair enough. His reaction to you implies a bigger chip on his shoulder though.

I’m impressed by your performance OP, I couldn’t have done anything like as well! Wouldn’t surprise me if I had scored zero.

You can't piss on my fire - I know I'm intelligent

On the plus side, at least he'll never ask for you to join in on UC in the future! 😂

I'd definitely be keeping an eye out for any other such behaviours where he's trying to find a way to seem better than you. At least you've got a "well, I did beat you at UC" to throw back at him now.

I think it's the wide reading and curiosity that means you can make connections/see patterns

same with me i like to study vaious topics etc and sometimes it can help see the links between eg 1a and 2b etc

Comedycook · 16/07/2025 07:56

Sounds like you damaged his fragile ego...

Fwiw, I think I'm reasonably intelligent and can't answer a single question on university challenge...so well done!

I got acetone as an answer once and was very pleased with myself. I remember all sorts of random things but never anything useful, although there are things I know lots about, and if they came up on university challenge I'd be well away.

I had a really routine driven after school week with my Mum- it went
Monday - park
Tuesday - swimming
Wednesday- park then library
Thursday - swimming
Friday- park
Saturday morning - town/ library
Sunday - Swimming then park
It was all free and she liked to keep us busy!
I loved the library so much!

I loved the library too, but it never occurred to me to do anything other than take out books.

This is fantastic! One of the things I've found fun about the post-Google age is realising what all those references in the song lyrics, books and films I loved are. I often think about how we had no option in those days but to accept that we didn't know what some things meant. But you found a way! Genius.

I'm the same OP, right down to looking for references I did not know of "we didn't start the fire" 😂
There is a great link somewhere with fabulous scope notes for every reference!

I also STILL note down things I want to look things up except these days it's usually as I'm listening to a podcast on the way to work and I speak into my watch. Sometimes it works and sometimes I have no idea what the 'reminder' is supposed to say 😆

How long have you been with him, OP? I'd keep an eye on this.

As an aside, it feels very early for UC to be back! The first rounds are always a fairly gentle start, I find. I'm counting down the days until Only Connect is back - next Monday, apparently!

I don't think it was on BBC I think k he was watching a rerun

Nope. Not in the slightest the tone of my thread. In fact, I've gone out of my way to say how it's just part of my life and how my DP has upset me. If I wanted to humblebrag I wouldn't make out I was with a fragile ego twat would I?

vixen996 · 16/07/2025 11:44

My ex was like this. We played WWTBAM on the Nintendo Wii one night and he lost at £32k. I however then went on to win the million and he was furious and accused me of playing the game so much that I knew the answers already! I had only bought the game the day before and it was the first time we played it! 🙄🤣. I’m an intelligent person and so is ex, but he just couldn’t stand the fact that I’d beaten him 🤦‍♀️

You bruised his poor baby ego, hun!

I agree that men with insecurities cannot handle intelligent women.

Don't dumb yourself down for him. It's not your problem. It's his.

Let him wallow in it.

Get ready for round 2, though. He'll convince himself that was beginner's luck or some other bullshit and he'll need to rectify it!

BufferingAgain · 16/07/2025 11:28

This can’t be the first time he’s got annoyed at you for achieving more than him - I can’t see this coming out of the blue?

Just shows so little self awareness to be annoyed at his partner, show it and not wonder why. Is he a bit dim at other times?

DiscoBob · 16/07/2025 11:25

Gawd, I rarely even get one correct answer! Mind you I didn't go to uni. I'm not that bad at quizzes in general though.

Your fella sounds jealous and babyish for not just taking as all a bit of fun. Does he feel threatened intellectually by you? Does he try and undermine your intelligence in other ways?

If so that's a big red flag.

zaxxon · 16/07/2025 11:23

> Whatever you do, don't tell him you "don't find it that hard"!
Because we should pander to the less intelligent and insecure?

Maybe a tiny bit, if you love them – and you're confident they won't behave like an arse to you.

You remind me of a friend who used to read the Sunday papers with a notebook beside her to write new words down. I remember thinking she has the right idea. There's a phrase in rise about your raring, in this case, rise above the opportunities that your family had. Intelligence is not always linked to book smarts e.g. my mam left school at 12 and is very intelligent in many different ways. I had the opportunities that my parents didn't. ps your husband expected to trounce you and has acted like a DICK
