DP angry with me over University Challenge

Teachingquestion · 16/07/2025 07:29

I wish I was joking.
I don't really care about university challenge at all. DP likes it. He watches it and tries see how many he can score. Normally I am just sitting there/having a cuppa , watching rather than answering all the questions. I just don't find quizzes that interesting. Last night, he asked me to join in. I did and I got double his amount of points. He said "oh for fucks sake don't win now just because you've decided to "
I know this sounds really trivial, but he had this look of absolute disdain on his face. Like a deep resentment. I am intelligent and in a good job that uses it, but I was only able to do that due to a good school being concerned with social mobility. My parents are intelligent but undereducated (again social mobility issues) I have friends of all types of intelligence and although I'm proud of my achievements, it's not the biggest thing for me. Also whisper I don't think university challenge is that hard, most of the time it's quite general knowledge put in a wordy question.
Dunno what my AIbU is really, just want a rant!

Right. Women are not allowed to say or know that they are intelligent without being so self deprecating they dissolve into the wallpaper and disappear entirely.

No but the OP saying that UC is a piece of piss is undermining the huge achievement of those who go on there, many of whom are women. Why can’t she be proud of her own intelligence instead of saying “whisper I don’t think university challenge is that hard” and that it’s just general knowledge? I was pointing out that the questions are far beyond the average persons general knowledge and she accuses me of tall poppy syndrome when she was the one denigrating the achievement.

ooh this is really spiky for no reason

No where has anyone said they get all the answers right - and to suggest that I am disingenuous about the library is weird.

This has been a lovely thread apart from the odd few determined to cut down those tall poppies

Kelz40 · 16/07/2025 21:56

And here my husband and I are watching murder documentaries on Netflix! 😂

That’s when you need to worry that you’ve had a look of disdain! 😂

Elsvieta · 16/07/2025 20:51

"Oh, ok darling - if you don't like being with an obviously intelligent woman, we won't be needing the money from my job in future, will we?".

Nothing worse than a bad loser; what a pathetic manbaby. Oh well, at least he's a DP not a DH; you found out in time.

InSpainTheRain · 16/07/2025 18:39

I dont like the sound of his reaction.at all. He sounds petty eith a fragile ego at best. But well done you! Dh and I always try to answer but we never worry who beats each other.

Well you said you didn’t think it was that hard and that it was just general knowledge so I assumed you got them all or most of them right. My mistake. I was making the point that it is very specialised and much harder than a general knowledge quiz so all kudos to you if you don’t find it hard. I have no desire to cut down any tall poppies 🤷‍♀️

mmmarmalade · 16/07/2025 16:13

@Teachingquestion double down and wind him up a bit - sounds like he needs his fragile ego toughening up - tell him
"I know some men who find intelligent women veeeery attractive"
but - maybe he hasn't got a sense of humour either.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/07/2025 15:51

just remind him that it's only a quiz designed for teenagers😂

I love learning for its own sake and this thread has reminded me of my book. When I was younger, mum took us to the library a lot and I had a little notebook that if I saw something on telly , or there was a reference in a book I was reading that I wanted to know more about/a famous painting mentioned that I wanted to look up etc or a piece of music , I would write it in my notebook and go and then go to the library and look everything up and make notes. This will age me but I remember looking up every reference In that song "we didn't start the fire" (after taping it off the radio and slowly copying it out having no idea how to spell half of it 😀 )

We had a set of encyclopaedias at home and when I was at a loose end I would pick one and open it at random to read interesting facts. I've always loved learning for the sake of learning.

Lollzi86 · 16/07/2025 15:45

Are you dating my ex? He used to get cross when I thrashed him at UC too. Hence why he is now an ex 😂

Good for you! I think it's great that you were encouraged from a young age by your mother, especially given that she didn't really get an opportunity to use her brain as much as she could. Keep on learning! (and don't cut yourself down to make a man happy)

Definitely. They will have one arts/humanities person, a maths one, a scientist etc. I’m quite surprised at the people who say they get all of the questions right as some of them are highly complex science questions that you wouldn’t know really unless you’d studied the subject at quite a high level.

Did anyone say that? I didn't see that. OP only said that she got double the points her husband did. So that could just be 2 points for all we know.

An example:

In cytogenetics, what term describes the entire chromosomal complement of a cell which may be observed during mitotic metaphase?

Not really the sort of thing I’d have looked up as a kid on a trip to the library but who knows 🤷‍♀️

the answer is karyotype apparently

They are also probably picked to have complimentary knowledge.

So if you can keep pace with a team of 4x people with good memories that are all trained up and all have knowledge in different areas then you are doing a pretty good job.

I've been dumped for being smarter than a man 😂 since then I usually go on a date to a pub quiz quite early on. Play a few boardgames and see how they react to losing (or winning, for that matter). Filters out the ones easily intimidated and emasculated. I like a bit of competition - intelligence is attractive.

I'm currently happily single, mind 😅

Edited

It really is a good filter. When my DH and I started dating we played lots of boardgames together. I often won. He was always happy to congratulate me and play again. I saw it as an important green flag and it made him more attractive in my eyes.

Hoppinggreen · 16/07/2025 14:46

One of the things my DH says he really loves about me is my intelligence.
I have a head full of interesting (but largely useless) facts and he jokes that I can give Google a run for its money. However, he is very very technically smart and knows about Physics, AI, Programming etc in a way I never could and I love that about him too.
I would hate to have to hide how much I know just to make a man with self esteem issues feel better about himself

It is really hard - people are just showing off. The questions are on stuff that the average person wouldn’t know. The contestants spend months and months cramming random topics and quiz questions and they have heats at the unis to select those with the best general knowledge. If you picked a random Oxford student they probably wouldn’t know the answer to most of the questions yet they are clearly intelligent.

Jeez I’m feeling like a right thicko now for thinking University Challenge is really hard! OH and I play it every week and feel proud if we get a few questions right! Normally we average 10-15 between us but sometimes it’s more (or much less, especially in the later rounds!).

You’ve damaged his fragile ego OP…

Wow what a sore loser he was. I'm also so sad for your Mum's lost potential (not that there is anything wrong with being a cleaner). My gran was like that; so intelligent but no chance for a career.

He's not shown this side of him before tbh but I haven't played any board games with him. We definitely talk about stuff and he has seemed to enjoy it, he doesn't shut me down or anything.
I'll just keep an eye and see if he undermines again or if it was just a tired moment...

What's he like on your birthdays, @Teachingquestion ? That's often a good indicator of people who need a close eye kept on them, although it might be a bit early days yet.

PithyTaupeWriter · 16/07/2025 13:48

Careful here. How long have you been together? Do you have kids together?
He’s going to expect you to shrink yourself to make him feel bigger for your entire life, or at least however long you are with him. This is not a small thing at all. Do you want to spend the rest of your life tiptoeing around his brittle ego?
