What would you use 'extra' rooms for in your house?

If your house had a big kitchen, living room and a seperate dining room what would you use the other rooms for?

In a dreamland, what would make you happy, and do you think your partner or family would agree?

For me I think I would love a library room. Comfy sofa, various throws, loads of books with a ladder that attaches to the bookshelves.. I also quite like the idea of a cinema room, but that feels like something we'd use less often, especially with how big the normal televisions are now. That just feels like another living room to me...

What would you do, if you had the space?

A dedicated present wrapping room with everything permanently out on tables and wall racks with a huge assortment of wrapping supplies.

Ideal house, Slightly sensible option...

Downstairs:

Big open plan kitchen diner
Livingroom
Play room
Study
Utility room
Toilet
Garage

Upstairs
5 bedrooms
At least 2 bathrooms (Ideally 2 en suites and 1 main bath)

Now money is no object:
Gym
Cinema / games room (think pool table, bar party room)
Pool
Sauna
Laundry room
Library

Sauna 😁

Husband and I both have a separate office/dressing room. Husband also has a gaming space in his office. I have a comfy love seat for reading but no tv.

Downstairs I’ve just turned our guest room into a hangout space for the kids (eldest just turned 13) - sofa bed, storage, TV, games console style thing.

GRex · 17/07/2025 08:04

I was happy with my extra rooms, but now I want to add an orangerie and a games room.

BoxOfCats · 17/07/2025 07:51

I am a single person and am lucky enough to have a 4 bedroom house. I use them for:

master bedroom
office
dressing room / clothes storage
And the last bedroom I rent out for some extra income

ToffeePennie · 16/07/2025 22:48

Actually if we are talking totally unrealistically; I’d love to have a 100 seat theatre.
My am-drams group is going to be left high and dry before not too long. If we could have our own space to rehearsal with a proper stage and it’s all mine, that would be amazing!

When my husband and I bought our current house we were planning to have 3 or 4 children (still hope to). So we bought a larger house than we needed as a couple.

Currently we have one toddler and multiple extra rooms.

This gives us

  • a library (we had to have the shelving built in)
  • A play area for my toddlers toys to be mostly out of sight when not in use
  • Guest bedroom
  • Study

We then have bedrooms for my husband and I, one bedroom for just me I used when pregnant and uncomfortable or when having a difficult night with the baby, and a nursery for our 1 year old.

Femalefootyfan · 16/07/2025 21:27

We have an extra room downstairs, it’s used as the grandkids toy room and it has a sofa bed and a tv in there with a huge built in wall cupboard with bookshelves so it’s multi purpose

PluckyChancer · 16/07/2025 20:42

We have a large sunroom (40ft x 15ft) attached to the kitchen/dining room and it’s my favourite room, second to my sewing room.

It has two sets of French doors and plenty of windows and a roof light in the centre. Because it’s got triple glazing and is well insulated inc. the roof, we use it all yr round. It doesn’t get too hot either, although I live in Ireland and we rarely get heat waves here. 😂

itbemay1 · 16/07/2025 20:36

Our previous house had 3 ‘reception rooms’ we used one for a lounge, one a dining room and one for a snug for the kids - sofa/TV books etc. I miss that house!

IcelandQuestion · 16/07/2025 20:36

We’re moving from a tiny house (2 rooms downstairs, 2 bedrooms and bathroom) to a pretty big one (praying all goes ahead smoothly due to exchange next week!)

We will have an ‘extra’ room downstairs which we plan to use as a playroom - or at least just to store all DC’s stuff. There’s a room to be DH’s office/ study too. 4 beds upstairs - one of which I will make into my office but would like to give it a bit of a library/ reading corner/ cosy type vibe too. Just my space - in fact I might continue to work from the kitchen table as I currently do and make the ‘office room’ just a bit of space for me!

Once we’re in and have hopefully started to build up savings again DH is planning to convert the garage into some kind of separate lounge/ man cave situation but I am reluctant to give up the storage having gone so long without any!

BejewelledCat · 16/07/2025 20:24

I have 2 spare bedrooms. One is now a gym and the other is a sewing room.

Overnight guests are not encouraged.

TattiePants · 16/07/2025 20:04

We have a large kitchen which also has a lounge and dining area plus 3 other downstairs rooms. One is the main lounge, one a study and the third was a playroom for many years but I’m slowly reclaiming it as a dining room. The third room is hardly ever used now so will eventually incorporate it into the kitchen.

Laura95167 · 16/07/2025 19:50

Absolutely a library room. If it was big enough id include a dinning table, to eat at or stack books on

Mt563 · 16/07/2025 19:03

Just put an offer in on a house with an open plan lounge/ kitchen/diner plus three other downstairs rooms and a good size garage. Thinking 1 room as library/ study/spare room (Murphy bed), 1 room as a grown up lounge/snug (with office setup that can hideaway), 1 room as playroom. Then use the garage as utility and gym as well as outside stuff storage.
So excited after our 2 up 2 down terrace with stuff everywhere.

notatinydancer · 16/07/2025 18:57

Same as you library , cinema and dressing room.

TaborlinTheGreat · 16/07/2025 18:56

Utility/laundry room
Craft room

Natsku · 16/07/2025 18:53

I want a study/library. I used to have one but now its DD's bedroom. But perhaps in a few years DS will no longer use the playroom (that is connected to the lounge but would have been a separate room once upon a time) and we can put the wall back and put a door in and then I'll have an extra room to turn into a study/library. And a summer bedroom, because it is way too hot upstairs in the summer.

WolfFoxHare · 16/07/2025 18:51

We have two extra rooms downstairs - one is the library/study, the other the playroom (actually toy storage because DS never actually plays in there, he prefers to play in the sitting room). Then upstairs we have a guest bedroom and an all purpose dumping room where we dry laundry, do ironing, have lots more bookshelves and a table where I work sometimes. Also if we have extra guests we put them up in there on a pullout bed.

purser25 · 16/07/2025 18:47

A craft sewing room to be able to leave my sewing machine out. A library I could have my fiction in alphabetical order and my information books in categories sad really.

WithManyTot · 16/07/2025 18:32

Downstairs we had 3:spare rooms so had, a cinema (never actually used) a play room and an office. Upstairs one spare room as a spare bedroom

Katemax82 · 16/07/2025 18:08

I've got 4 kids, one is 19 and autistic so probably won't move out anytime soon so id make a nice big bedroom for him so my younger ones could have their own rooms

Moederbuffly · 16/07/2025 16:45

My daughter was born with gross neurological damage and before sensory rooms were a thing. On the advice from Sense,I made her a sensory area out of an old tea chest and would put her in there as a tiny baby, it was the only time she felt comforted (and I got a break!) . Fast forward a good few years and I gave up my bedroom for a wonderful sensory room that we can both chill in, it's amazing.

GnomeDePlume · 16/07/2025 16:42

When DCs were all living at home I thought that when they started to leave home we would downsize.

Now only DS still living with us. Instead of downsizing we extended.

We now have

  • dressing room
  • office
  • sewing room/guest room
  • snug/airbrushing room

In my fantasy home I would have a warm but airy sewing room in the garden complete with small kitchen, toilet, changing room.

DH would have a workshop with separate areas for motorbike restoration and woodworking.
