I’m so tired of people with dangerous dogs ruining the park for everyone else.

Every time I take my children and our small cavapoo to the park, there’s always someone with an intimidating dog off the lead. Yesterday it was a man with a huge German Shepherd (and I mean huge), a bully breed on a lead, and an Akita off the lead just wandering around.

This is a busy, very suburban park, full of families and young children. And there I am, trying to scoop up my two toddlers, push the pram with the baby, grab the dog, and move away as fast as possible because I am not taking the risk of one of those dogs attacking. And let’s be honest, if something did happen, I’d have to sacrifice my dog to protect my children.

Even the two dogs that were technically on a lead, if they decided to go for another dog or child, there’s no way he could have held them back. They were enormous, powerful breeds.

And don’t get me started on the Akita. It was off-lead, trotting around freely as if that’s totally normal. Akitas were originally bred to guard property and hunt large game, including bears. They are strong, territorial, and known for being aggressive toward other dogs. They can be incredibly unpredictable and are not the type of breed you let wander freely in a public park full of children and pets.

Today it was a woman with a giant Rottweiler off-lead, paying absolutely no attention while she scrolled on her phone. Again, no control, no awareness. Rottweilers were originally bred to drive cattle and guard livestock, and they are incredibly strong, protective dogs. They have a natural guarding instinct, which can easily turn dangerous when not properly controlled. It’s no coincidence that they feature in so many fatal dog attacks, especially involving children. The number of child deaths caused by Rottweilers is horrifying and well-documented. It doesn’t matter how sweet you think your dog is at home but when a dog like that turns, it’s too late to stop it.

Far too many times my own dog, who is a total wimp and literally gets bullied by a chihuahua, has been attacked by dogs whose owners claim, “Oh, they never normally do that.” It’s always after the fact, once the damage is done.

And honestly, it’s the complete lack of awareness that really gets me. You might think your dog is friendly, but when you’re letting it freely wander up to children and other dogs, especially massive, powerful breeds, it’s terrifying. It might not scare you, but to everyone else, it’s incredibly intimidating.

I love dogs. I grew up with them. But this constant anxiety when I take my children out is exhausting. I shouldn’t have to be on high alert every time we go to the park because someone refuses to take basic responsibility for an animal that could cause serious harm.

And ... if she finds such dogs intimidating, then ipso facto they are intimidating. No? (Part of the meaning of "intimidating".)

So, it follows, owners of these dogs should take care to keep them away from other people to avoid such intimidation.

I say again. Watch out, you dog people -- take care: keep your intimidating animals way from me and my grandkids, otherwise you will be to blame for a dog that is no longer intimidating because it's dead.

No longer Liam Neeson vibes.
Now, Cruella de Ville vibes.

You're right @MuffinsAreJustCakesAtBreakfast
I forgot that cats all shit 24 hours a day in MN world 🙄 and carry lots of terrible diseases.

(disclaimer: I have cats as well as big dogs, I'm really living dangerously just being here...😏)

ForestFox44 · 18/07/2025 14:42

So people can't take their dogs out (even on a lead as you don't seem okay with that either) because you don't approve of their breed? 😆😆 get over yourself and go somewhere else if you don't like it.

MN is like a parallel universe sometimes.

I could suspect she's saying it tongue in cheek, she's clearly an intelligent person, but it's hard to be sure on MN. It is scary the level of hatred on here towards anyone who dares to have a dog larger than a doodle.

Or just any dog. 🤷🏼‍♀️😵‍💫

or cat.

I think goldfish are acceptable on MN. That's it. Maybe a pet basil plant.

Careful, nund said she would beat your dog to death with her walking stick, in full view of her grandchildren, if your dog is just barking.

Indeed. Who gets excited fantasising about the opportunity to beat a dog to death?

I think perhaps she should not be around dogs OR children! She sounds deranged, just one bad day away from being a headline 😵‍💫

Sorry, you lost me at Cavapoo.

Oh, no further posts.

Just to be 100% clear, if you ever encounter me you will be very lucky if you face criminal proceedings (attacking a service animal is a criminal offence), because I will take you stick off you and wrap it around your neck. Tightly.

You are no better than the irresponsible dog owners.

But they were keeping their dogs away from her. Two of them were on leads. This is the point we are making.

If I'm walking my girl, close to me, on a lead, under control, I would not expect abuse from someone just because they find her size intimidating. I would not expect to be told I have no right to walk her in the same park where I've walked for years. Nor would I expect my dog to be issued with death threats...

Big dogs have the ability to be twats or nice dogs.
Little dogs can also have the ability to be twats or nice dogs.
While we are at it, medium dogs too!

It's almost as if they are individual sentient beings.....

....oh, wait.

Again... The owners in the OP have kept them away from other people. 2 of them on lead and the other well trained, walking to heel by the description.

Untrained, off-lead dogs are dangerous no matter the breed, I hate untrained, off-lead dogs anywhere near my ddog, but the dogs the OP talks about are not that.

JJMama · 18/07/2025 13:52

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 15/07/2025 14:15

Yanbu. It's almost always the breed.
I could take on a medium to small dog. I could not take on an XL or angry rottie. German Shepherds in theory should be amazing dogs (see police dogs) but the poor dogs are often owned by unfit thickies who don't work them.

This. It’s not the breed; they’re all animals and as such, are unpredictable. Many of the little yappy ones bite more than bigger ones.

Either way, it’s the useless thick as shit owners who are the problem. Buying animals they have no idea how to treat and keep - selfish fuckwits who don’t understand they’re animals and not babies!

nund · 18/07/2025 13:47

CoubousAndTourmalet · 18/07/2025 13:01

Exactly.
As a person who clearly prefers small crossbreeds, she finds any dog bigger than a Labrador intimidating.

And if you wanna get really nit-picky, she also says the ‘dangerous’ dogs are ruining the park for ‘everyone else’

When she means just her. Because I will assume she didn’t ask every single other park go-er if they minded the dogs being there.

But she started the thread and ran, knowing full well that people will agree because this is MN, not the real world. The amount of dog hate on here is disproportionate to real life. I've had big dogs for almost 50 years and never come across this level of negativity on my daily walks.

ButterCrackers · 18/07/2025 13:39

Dogs should be on a lead. I’m a dog owner and would never have my dog off lead in a public area. I find that many dog owners are selfish and, even if their dog is well trained, can’t think of the worry a dog can give to others. Dangerous breeds off lead are a threat to dogs on the lead as well as people.

You’re ignoring the facts, or at least reducing the OP to suit your needs. I’ve just reread the OP, which is something I’d recommend to many posters on many threads!

She says every time they go to the park there’s someone with an intimidating dog off lead. So that’s a problem. Then she gives 2 examples, one from that day and one from the day before, an Akita and a Rottweiler, both off lead. That’s a problem. The fact there were two others on lead doesn’t really change things.

Her actual thread title describes the dogs as ‘dangerous’ not intimidating.
Then her actual OP doesn’t describe one dangerous dog.

If she had said that the Akita or Rottie had actually come over and starting snarling at her, she’d have had more sympathy. She doesn’t even mention that these dogs paid her, her children or her shit designer breed any notice - let alone that they came anywhere near her.

She’s getting huffy at them merely existing in the same place as her or not… including the ones on leads and she doesn’t think a lead is a suitable enough restraint.

Late to the convo, as usual.
OP, you're absolutely right. And it's insane the number of people on here who don't get the point.
Dogs in public places should always be supervised closely. No question.
Any dog can turn, in the right set of circumstances. Small dogs can be grumpy and nip or full-on bite. Large breeds bred to hunt, fight or protect can kill, due to bite strength and muscle mass. Once they turn, there's no going back.
And any dog running over to or jumping up at small kids can be pretty scary to said kid, regardless of how friendly the owner claims it to be.

But...none of the dogs 'ran over' to the OP. And the other two dogs she was on about WERE ON A LEAD. It's insane the number of people on here who are ignoring the facts in the post!
