My OH will not drink tap water and it drives me insane. He just drove 20 minutes home at 10pm because he left half a bottle of water on the side at home and no shops are open and in his words ‘I take my water seriously’

I think the reason it drives me insane is because the reason he won’t drink it is because of the hormones etc in it but yet he has spent his whole life being obese. He goes through intense phases of working out and eating really well and loses weight but ultimately he is still obese and thinks that the one time he got to 17st is some sort of achievement that he needs to tell me about allllllll the time. He drives without a seatbelt on, he took pretty hard drugs as a young man and has always drunk alcohol (although he barely does these things now) I think another reason is that he constantly watches strong men / sports personalities talking about their workouts and nutrition and he insists on telling me about things that I have no interest in and have told him as much - after many years of politely saying ‘ooh interesting’ whilst secretly thinking ‘I bet you weren’t thinking about the processed meats giving you cancer when you ate your McDonalds wrap for breakfast 😡’ or ‘I’m 9 years older than you and manage to get more done in any given day than you do despite the fact that I’m not interested in an ice bath’ I know there’s no link to obesity from tap water but Jesus Christ something has to kill you! I doubt it will be the rusty pipes or hormones in the water! He had the audacity to ask me if I felt comfortable eating a sweetie the other day (not fat shaming me, I’m not fat, more that he wanted to make the point that there were no ingredients on the wrapper, pretty sure there were no ingredients on the sweet and sour chicken from the Chinese that he ate last night either 🤪)

I also know lots of you are going to tell me to get a grip and let him live as he pleases but if you had to listen to him go on and on about it whilst he’s sat there sweating and needing 400 bowel movements a day you would find it a hard pill to swallow.

Do you drink tap water? AIBU to think that in an emergency a bit of tap water isn’t going to kill you!

Oh that’s another ballgame altogether. We drink lactose free milk because he ‘might’ be lactose intolerant. He hasn’t had any tests and he still needs the toilet 5-6 times a day despite cutting out lactose almost entirely. He hasn’t seen a doctor about this but just in case we drink milk that’s twice the price of cows milk 😂

He needs to get himself checked out if this is a recent change in bowel habit OP. And in the meantime tell him the plastic he’s using with all these water bottles will do far more harm than him drinking tap water, and buy him a Brita filter jug and reusable bottle. And some earplugs for yourself !!

Natsku · 14/07/2025 08:07

He's stupid saying its because of hormones in the water but I can't drink the hard tap water where my parents live because it tastes so foul it makes me feel sick now that I'm used to soft water.

He sounds like my ex's double! You have my full sympathy. He was a great man but became very draining. 18 stone+ overweight body builder, refused to wear seat belt, all for the protein, supplements etc but would then eat a full pack of cakes, sweets, chocolates... always preaching and trained 7 days a week!!! Talked about nothing else. I do understand what it's like. Mental health played a big part which I fully supported and educated myself about. Perhaps there's some underlying issue? He also would not drink direct tap water, only filtered.

Hormones in tap water?!?! Really? Your DH is insane. Our tap water is perfectly fine. It's pretty much all I ever drink.

Insane to think there are hormones in tap water? Definitely not. To think it’s more ‘dangerous’ than his other food choices. Maybe.

Globules · 14/07/2025 08:02

He's a twat

This is a free online meaure of Cattell's 16 personality factors.

Introduction
In his explorations of personality, British psychologist Raymond Cattell found that variations in human personality could be best explained by a model that has sixteen variables (personality traits), using a statisical procedure known as factor analysis. Following this discovery he went on to create and promote the 16PF Questionnaire. This test uses a public domain scales from the Internation Personality Item Pool to measure the same traits.

Procedure
This personality test consists of 164 statements about yourself, for each indicate how accurate it is on the scale of (1) disagree (2) slightly disagree (3) niether agree nor disagree (4) slightly agree (5) agree. It will take most people around ten minutes to complete.

Informed consent
This test should be taken for educational purposes only. It is not a substitute for any type of professional service, medical or otherwise. You answers on this test will be stored and used for research, and possibly shared in a way that preserves your anonymity.

He should be drinking filtered tap water from a glass, not plastic bottled water - it’s even worse for you. He needs to do do his research.

ShoeeMcfee · 14/07/2025 08:01

I don't know why you're laughing about him and calling your anger 'irrational'. You are streets ahead of him emotionally and intellectually. You could do a lot better @Drowninginconfusion

Fridaynightfish · 14/07/2025 08:01

I live in Scotland and our water is delicious - so yes we drink it.

@Drowninginconfusion the water seems the least of your worries tbh?

If your husband irritates you so much maybe it’s time to call it a day.

KassandraOfSparta · 14/07/2025 08:01

We have excellent tap water in Scotland. I think though that people do get used to whatever the water is like where they grew up - I personally don't like very hard water which furs up the kettle and iron because it's not what I'm used to. Others who are used to very hard water probably think my much softer water is awful.

The refusing to drink anything but mineral water is ridiculous though and appears to be the tip of an iceberg with the rest of the silly behaviours.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 14/07/2025 07:56

He sounds a real prize - not.

Luckily you are not married to him, sadly it seems he is the father to two of your children.

there is far more to this than just a half bottle of water left at home.

DurinsBane · 14/07/2025 07:55

ilovesooty · 13/07/2025 22:34

Of course I drink tap water. I keep a filter jug in the fridge.

So not straight out of a tap into a glass then?

Barney16 · 14/07/2025 07:53

He sounds intensely irritating. So he has particular ideas about water, food, exercise but he's very overweight and doesn't actually consistently address that sensibly?Just bores the arse off you with half baked ideas? Seat belt thing is dangerous, change in bowel habits he needs to go to GP pronto.

FigTreeInEurope · 14/07/2025 07:52

Tap water is subjected to much more stringent testing than bottled water.

ConcernedOfClapham · 14/07/2025 07:51

Good Lord this guy sounds awful, like he’s parroting nonsense he read on the Internet or heard from ‘Dave at work’.

But, really, OP, as somebody else pointed out - this smacks of deeper problems in your relationship. You don’t sound like you like him all that much; do you love him? Is he your soulmate? Do you really want to grow old with him?

Because if the answer is ‘no’ to these questions, take steps to change things. Life really is too short to just settle for this sort of BS.

If he refuses to wear a seatbelt he's increasing his risk of dying by 50% & it's not only his life he is putting at risk but also anyone else in the car.

In an accident you'll potentially have a plus 17 stone projectile likely to crush you and/or other occupants.

Your own life is worth refusing not to get in a car with him unless he is wearing it.

100% agree. My ex was 18 stone + body builder and over weight. Refused to wear seat belt. So I insisted on driving my car whenever we went anywhere and refused to drive unless he was wearing it. My ship, my rules. He could do what he wanted when he was alone in his car. I just don't understand the logic of not wearing it. Pure ignorance.

Alondra · 14/07/2025 07:49

I'm 64 and have drunk tap water all my life. I don't even notice the difference with bottled water unless I buy sparking mineral. Then I notice the difference.

I also come from Madrid and Madrid has good tap water compared to Barcelona which is horrible.

So it really depends. 😀

Branleuse · 14/07/2025 07:42

He sounds like a fckn nightmare,

I think id leave with just the clothes on my back and starting a new life somewhere.
Either that or go completely ballistic frenzied goblin-mode, and force him out.

Life doesnt have to be shit.
I know its a lot for you, but you really do need to start untangling yourself from him, whether he likes it or not.

user1476613140 · 14/07/2025 07:38

Hate water out the tap anywhere in England. Has to be Scottish water out of the tap!

ultraviolet4753 · 14/07/2025 07:38

We have the Virgin Pure plumbed in water filter because I hate tap water. It removes a lot of stuff (including hormones). It's changed names to Tapp or something.

Mostly got it for the hot water and ice cold water feature, as I can't lift a kettle.

Brownieshonour · 14/07/2025 07:37

He does seem to have some kind of mental disorder.

“He drives without a seatbelt on”

Well I hope he gets caught and fined. This is downright irresponsible - if he doesn’t care for himself, he should for his wife and children. Reading all your posts, though, OP, it seems he doesn’t care about much other than his own health fads. As you are not married and it’s your house, I would think very carefully about what you want for you and your DC - if you get a separation order, you can oblige him to leave. As for tap water - nothing whatsoever wrong with it. Drinking bottled water is a fad. When I was young, only foreigners drunk bottled water.

LurkyMcLurkinson · 14/07/2025 07:32

He sounds like a lot of hard work. You don’t have to live a life of sufferance just because he doesn’t want to leave and is frightening. I know you’re not ready to take on the fight of getting him out but what would help you get there? Some work on your self esteem? Some work with a domestic abuse charity if you feel there’s been abuse? Counselling? Speaking with friends candidly about how bad it’s got?

Lactose free milk has had the lactose (a sugar) removed and/or broken down into simple sugars by lactase (an enzyme). It will still contain normal levels of oestrogen and progesterone as the cow is still lactating to produce milk for its calf and unless it’s organic milk, then it may also contain antibiotics too!
Maybe skip the organic info if you want to go back to normal
priced milk 😂
