To go swimming in the sea whilst the kids are in bed?

We live by the sea. It is fifteen metres through the garden from the door to the edge of the water. It is a safe place to swim and we are good swimmers.

Are we unreasonable to go for a fifteen minute swim once the kids (preschool) are asleep? They never wake. We would have a friend lined up who would come and babysit if they don't hear from us after half an hour (in case of shark attack or other unforeseen event)!

Basically the only risk is a house fire. We would not have any appliances running and the house would never be more than 30 metres away and in full view. Window open so we'd hear smoke alarm.

I feel like this should be acceptable as it's basically like having a swimming pool in your garden. But for some reason I feel it isn't okay, but I don't know why!

What would you do?

YABU you should be locked up for even thinking of it.
YANBU it's just like a swimming pool, it's fine.

I really really want to go and stay at OPs house it sounds amazing! I'm imagining a U-shaped house made of glass and built into a hill thay leads down to a lagoon 😍

Go ! My garden is much bigger than that and o don’t think I’m being negligent every time I feed the chicken or go to the garage to get something . Yes you can drown , fall down or similar but so can any parent when they are by themselves with a child . Go enjoy

But presumably if you were going to be in the garage doing something for a while, or gardening, you take the baby monitor with you, no? So you are alerted if a child wakes/ vomits/ falls out of bed?

I used to pop to the end of the garden out of earshot to put stuff in the compost, or pop out to the shed to get something, but if I was planning on sitting out of earshot at the end of the garden for a while then I took the monitor with me.

presumably that’s a main difference between swimming in a pool in your own back garden (where you’d have the monitor on the pool edge) and sea swimming where you can’t monitor your children. Funnily enough the OP hasnt responded to that point

Lizziespring · 13/07/2025 20:45

If the children woke and came into the water to find you, would that be ok?
#nope

Sidebeforeself · 13/07/2025 20:37

What the hell is a romantic swim?!

squooz · 13/07/2025 20:32

Sorry YABU - you lost me at ‘preschool’

Two words......Madeleine McCann

You are just plain stupid to think you can plan, foresee and prevent every event. If that was the case no one would ever be injured, fall ill, have an accident.

What if one of your kids fell ill and you werent there? If you arent prepared to look after them properly dont have them.

knor · 13/07/2025 20:19

I personally wouldn’t no. Does depend how safe your town is I suppose? But think don’t think it’s worth it for a 15 min swim.
id just get the babysitter

Well, apart from the fact that if you think the sea is the same as a swimming pool (!!😂) presumably if you had a pool in your back garden, you would swim up and down with the baby monitor on the side of the pool so you would see/ hear if one of the kids vomited/ fell out of bed/woke up scared? I assume you don’t take the baby monitor in the sea, though something tells me this is so batshit that who knows…..

Louoby · 13/07/2025 20:12

I personally wouldn’t as I would be thinking “madeleine McCann”. I don’t think it’s worth the risk. Just take it in turns?!

You speak as though there is more than one of you. Take turns.

This

Im a year-round outdoor swimmer and I sympathise, but they are too young.

Blablibladirladada · 13/07/2025 20:09

Surely it is a joke?

take it in turn. No. You can’t leave both your children asleep somewhere and you guys go somewhere else. Not at home. Not anywhere.

I work for the emergency services. I hear every shift how lives change in a moment.

one situation I heard was when a mum ran herself a bath, stepped out into the garden for a cigarette and came back to find her young child had fallen in and was drowning. Luckily she got there in time.

another mum left their children to go to the end of the street to the corner shop and came home to a house fire - the kids weren’t as lucky as the first example I gave.

your child could wake up ill and be scared when they can’t find you

your child could fall out of bed and be injured

thore are so many risks and a reason why it’s not ok to leave children that age unattended.

you’ve take precautions if something happens to you, but you have not mentioned any precautions you’ve taken to protect them.

Do better. ask yourself if that swim in the sea is worth your child’s life. Then take it in turns.

Flavourful · 13/07/2025 19:47

Rule of thumb I used with my kids. I can go as far as A, they can see me, B I can see them or C, I can hear them. They are now 30 with their own child and never have I ever left them, even abroad, I walked the edge of the pools when they went swimming, I put them to bed and had drinks on the balcony when it was their bedtime. All because I chose to have children which means putting your wants aside for the safety of those children.

Daftypants · 13/07/2025 19:46

FGS don’t do that !
take turns

Apricotjam23 · 13/07/2025 19:42

Don’t do this. You wouldn’t see or hear someone creep in a door or a window on the opposite side of the house, or if they were ill or had an accident - you couldn’t take a baby monitor in the sea.

Flavourful · 13/07/2025 19:41

So you’re going off for 15 minutes whether that is in the sea, to a neighbours or the shop. 15 minutes! it takes 1 minute for someone to break into your house, 5 minutes for house to engulfed in a fire. And you’re leaving your kids willingly for 15 minutes. This is wrong on all levels. You are not there, within sight and sound of the house, and your children, and a neighbour raising the alarm 30 mins after your non return is quite scary.

LucyMonth · 13/07/2025 19:40

& OP I have a preschooler who I would say “never wakes during the night”….unless he has chicken pox…or covid…or a vomiting big…or any other illness that makes him feel terrible then of course he wakes up needing meds and comfort. Your kids can’t possibly actually “never” wake up during the night.

legolegoeverywhereandnotadroptodrink · 13/07/2025 19:38

why ask if you already know what’s safe/acceptable ?

LucyMonth · 13/07/2025 19:37

Imagine the outrage if 2 preschoolers died because their parents left them alone in the house to go fuck in a lagoon.

gattocattivo · 13/07/2025 19:28

I’m concerned about your house being so close to the sea.

LouiseK93 · 13/07/2025 19:27

Top comment 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

GiveDogBone · 13/07/2025 19:23

It’s absolutely nothing like having a swimming pool in your back garden. What on earth would make you even think that’s a reasonable thing to say. Even when asleep, young children need an adult in the house.

Trishyb10 · 13/07/2025 19:23

Nutter

LouiseK93 · 13/07/2025 19:19

Gerry and Kate McCann joke? 😅
