To go swimming in the sea whilst the kids are in bed?

We live by the sea. It is fifteen metres through the garden from the door to the edge of the water. It is a safe place to swim and we are good swimmers.

Are we unreasonable to go for a fifteen minute swim once the kids (preschool) are asleep? They never wake. We would have a friend lined up who would come and babysit if they don't hear from us after half an hour (in case of shark attack or other unforeseen event)!

Basically the only risk is a house fire. We would not have any appliances running and the house would never be more than 30 metres away and in full view. Window open so we'd hear smoke alarm.

I feel like this should be acceptable as it's basically like having a swimming pool in your garden. But for some reason I feel it isn't okay, but I don't know why!

What would you do?

YABU you should be locked up for even thinking of it.
YANBU it's just like a swimming pool, it's fine.

I need to see this listing - can you give a link?!

Sorry it was about 15 years ago. Probably been condemned by now.

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 17/07/2025 19:18

Unfortunately not everyone knows it.

All the neglected kids start off with one little thing at a time.

Not saying OP is, but it's sad that being a parent doesn't come with automatic knowledge on caring for them.

LifeJuggler13 · 17/07/2025 09:36

Are you okay…? Of course this is unreasonable. Come on, you know this!

ThisBrickBee · 16/07/2025 17:45

.... Don't do it. I once left the kids in a Greek hotel room to go down for evening dinner but nipped back almost straight away for something. (Years and years ago, well before the Madeline incident and when people left prams outside shops). A massive strange bug was flying around the room absolutely terrorising them! They were screaming until I opened the window for it to fly out. And of course they've only got to wake up having a nightmare or night terrors... Can you imagine if you aren't there? It will happen one day.....

Are you for real ?

Really? A house with no doors or windows at the back. The sea only 15 metres from your property… probably not a great bet from an insurance point of view

I don't care. It sounds great to me.

whoopdiedoo · 15/07/2025 20:42

I’m a social worker and I’d be concerned about this. Nobody ever expects things to happen, yet on occasion they do. The role of a parent is to identify risks as well as possible and then try to avoid them.

You say a friend will come if they have had no contact in 30 minutes. Imagine if a freak accident happened as soon as you both entered the water. The friend would wait for 30 minutes and not hear anything, probably dither for another 10-15 minutes whilst they ensure they’re not overreacting and you don’t suddenly answer them, then start the journey over to your home which would take even more time. By this point your children would have been alone for over 45 minutes.

There’s the risk of fire, children choking on vomit, suffocation, all manner of things which would be reduced if there was a parent already in the home.

I'm also very amused by all the guesses as to what my house might look like 🤣

I once sat in my husbands new car to check it out on the drive of the house for less than 10 mins with the front door slightly ajar. I closed the car door & seriously after a few mins I could hear something & my preschooler had got out of bed & was crying at the top of the stairs. No idea how long he had been there crying before I realised- I really thought it would be fine because he had been asleep a while & I was only popping out less than a 3 steps from the front door. I was wracked with guilt because I wasn’t there when he was upset & trying to find me 30 seconds is a long time when you’re frightened & crying. I don’t think I’d feel right about going in the sea because of all the potential dangers & even if you were able to hear a cry or the smoke alarm through a window, how long would it realistically take you to get back & would those crucial
seconds make a difference if anything happens… you’d never forgive yourself if something happened & if there’s another adult around it seems silly not to take turns. I’m not one to catastrophise but this feels too risky.

YABVU. First it's a dip in the sea, then pop down the local corner shop, then going out for a meal on restaurant down the road 😬

You have a monitor for an 8 year old?

Yes. She likes to talk to me on it - night mummy. Morning mummy

plus as I’m semi deaf I wouldn’t hear her if she woke while watching tv downstairs or out side in the garden in spa

she wants it rather then me

islanddreamer1 · 14/07/2025 15:49

I don't think you would be asking for opinions if you thought leaving children in the house acceptable . It's not and there's no reason that both of you need to swim at the same time. ..Is this a real post ?

Mama981 · 14/07/2025 14:35

My concern wouldn't be about you drowning. My concern is imagine of the bloke who took madeleine lived near you (or similar sick person) and cottoned on to what you were doing. They could be in and out your house in 5 minutes and by the time you got back/someone realised you'd been broken into they would be long gone. The mcanns did almost exactly the same, you don't know who is about, I won't walk my dog out of the house if it's just me at home when baby is alseep for this reason, I will if grandparent or dad is asleep in house and I get up first.

Open water seems Diff to a pool in the garden

tho I go in the spa when dd 8 is asleep but I also have a monitor

tho she is like your dc and never wakes ans always slept well since a baby

prob count on one hand the times she has woken in 8yrs - teething as baby. Ear ache as older

You have a monitor for an 8 year old?

LBFseBrom · 14/07/2025 12:59

I think it is ridiculous to even contemplate it. Many have been lulled into a false sense of security but you just do not leave small children alone in a house.

As for wanting a romantic swim together, grow up. Or get a babysitter.

FancyOliveHiker · 14/07/2025 11:35

Bloozie · 14/07/2025 08:26

You could get into trouble in the water, they could get out of bed and get into a pickle, and Madeleine McCann looms large over it all. It's not the same as a swimming pool in the garden. You could set a monitor up next to the pool and hear them.

Plus the two sets of twins aged 3 and 4 that died because they were left alone whilst their mother went to Sainsbury's to do some shopping and the house caught fire and they couldn't escaped the locked house. The mother receives a ten years prison sentence for manslaughter.

bgeebees · 14/07/2025 09:25

Didn’t waste my time reading more than a couple of pages of this thread. Always amazes me why people go to the bother of writing long, descriptive posts asking for advice and then go on the defensive when the majority turn against them…either an attention seeker or totally made up!

All doors and windows on just one side of the house…… of course

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 14/07/2025 06:58

Maezzle · 12/07/2025 19:02

Because they are both on the same side of the house. There are no windows on the back of the house either.

Now this sounds like a riddle...

As everyone has said, take turns. One can swim, one can be in the back garden talking to the swimmer, but also monitoring the house. The sea can be unpredictable.

Answering your later question though, if I had a pool in my garden, yes I'd go in it once the children were in bed. Is it a lido or something?

Lorrainedrops · 14/07/2025 02:01

YABU.

Are you insane?!
Anything could happen in that time. Don't take the risk.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 14/07/2025 01:28

Hire an early babysitter or if you have a cleaner ask them to come early to sit in the house with kids

ItsameLuigi · 14/07/2025 00:20

WolfFoxHare · 13/07/2025 21:13

I’m not saying Social Services would take the kids away from OP if she went for her romantic swim, leaving her preschoolers asleep in an empty house. Just that they’d probably explain why her actions were stupid and negligent, and maybe send her and her husband in a parent course, perhaps keeping an eye on children by opening a file on the faint and putting them on some sort of plan. Though SS are so overstretched they might just have a quiet word about risk assessment.

Agreed, mine are 6&7 now and I wouldn't feel comfortable even taking my bins out late at night when they're asleep (I have to go behind the house down a short ally to do it)

eastegg · 13/07/2025 23:28

Another one here who doesn’t believe the 15m claim. It can’t always be 15m can it, even if it is sometimes? There are tides….
