This is it - climate change is really beginning to bite

We know the climate is changing and it is us. This particular heat wave feels like the next step up after a winter of devastating storms.

YABU - It's just too hot
YANBU - This is the taste of things to come.

It will take molten balls of lava falling from the sky for some to take notice.

yes a few days of hot weather is not indicative on its own of anything, but in context of what’s been happening across the world with extreme weather it clearly is a problem. The majority of experts are in agreement here. No one is saying you can’t enjoy the weather, personally, I hate it, but I get why others do like it. It is a problem overall though

and for those saying ‘oh well, humans should die out’, it’s not like humans are the only ones affected by climate change. If it’s bad enough to wipe us out, it could wipe out practically everything.

it may be too late, but governments should be doing more.

Enjoy the coolest summer of the rest of your life

TeenLifeMum · 11/07/2025 19:31

Climate change has always been a thing - ice age anyone? We’re speeding it up but things were never going to stay static on a ball of rock, metal and water spinning super fast around a ball of fire. Unrealistic expectations.

Recycle, put sun cream on and have a cocktail.

MyTidyMoose · 11/07/2025 19:30

You believe MSM? Come on this is what summer used to be like 60 years ago & yes I can still remember those school summer holidays. If the world is changing then all we can do is our bit without being over the top.

PistachioTiramisu · 11/07/2025 19:30

Try telling that to the inhabitants of this country about a million years ago! Why can't people understand that planets go through warming and cooling periods in perpetuity? It is normal. Why people are all jumping on the bandwagon with doom and gloom I struggle to understand. Anyone remember 30 years ago we were all going back to an ice age?

PistachioTiramisu · 11/07/2025 19:27

We have had grape vines in our garden for 20 years! Sorry you are wrong.

I was going to say we have had grapes for years and the dentist has had his for 30 year he was proudly showing off photos of his vines the other month from last year.

Pricelessadvice · 11/07/2025 19:29

We had lots of hot summers in the 70s, 80s and 90s. And hosepipe bans.
This is what summer used to be!

The dinosaurs were impacted.

We are SO fucking self absorbed to think this is about us.

What's the caused then?

Previous climate changes is all linked to CO2 due to extreme volcanic activity

We can't blame this on volcanos....

Onelifeonly · 11/07/2025 19:28

We didn't worry about unusual weather in 1976. Or maybe the adults did, I was too young to notice. Or in the 1960s when deep snow was common. Or in the 1980s when we had two major storms, which decimated many trees. The Thames frequently froze over the course of several hundred years. Global warming or not, the Earth's climate has been through many cycles. I don't think humans will destroy the earth, but we may need to adapt our life styles in future decades.

PistachioTiramisu · 11/07/2025 19:27

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 11/07/2025 16:33

The climate has totally changed in terms of what we can grow in our garden, which birds we see when, which fish visit the coast when etc.
We have actual grapes in our garden and typically it would be more of a blackcurrant or raspberry climate.

We have had grape vines in our garden for 20 years! Sorry you are wrong.

And down here in the north of New Zealand, middle of winter, I'm sitting here at 5.30 a.m. and it's 16 deg.c. Last week it was 20deg in the afternoon. There has been rain heavier than I've ever seen it, sweet potato crop rotting in the ground, citrus covered in mould. It's here alright, folks. I suppose the only good thing about it is that the next ice age had been delayed by a few thousand years. But that will come too.

Interestingly NZ came up as one of the safest countries to live in with regards to global warming/one of the least affected in the article I read.
Oh dear, there goes that theory then.

Gardenbumblebee · 11/07/2025 19:26

To quote George Carlin "The planet is fine, the people are fucked!"

Once we kill ourselves off, the planet will recalibrate and enter a new age. It's a shame as there is so much beauty in the world right now. After we leave it'll be just the roaches, crocodiles, and W H Smiths.

Wtfneighbour · 11/07/2025 19:26

We’ve had a week long spell of decent weather in the height of summer. Calm down.

Perhaps it doesn’t matter if humanity survives? We are after all just a blip in the expanse of the universe and time.

I think what matters is the potential for vast suffering in the next fifty years. I don’t think this will play out well in a spirit of universal humanity and compassion. Perhaps as a species we deserve what we get…

I agree.
Makes me so sad, sad for DD. I pray she doesn’t want children. It’s going to be a horrible world. Luckily I suppose I won’t be hear to see it.

The U.K. just thinks yay it’s hot.
Other countries will soon be uninhabitable, Greece is already burning every year. Where are all these people going to live.

If I could get to Canada I absolutely bloody would- but Canada doesn’t accept anyone Willy nilly like we do.

alexalisten · 11/07/2025 19:22

Its summer

TheFrendo · 11/07/2025 19:21

I don't see doomaggeddon. I see summer.

Back in 1976, when the climate sensationalist fear was the imminent arrival of the next ice age, there was a hot summer after a very dry autumn and winter

... 15 consecutive days from 23 June to 7 July temperatures reached 32.2 °C (90 °F) somewhere in England. Furthermore, five days saw temperatures exceed 35 °C (95 °F).

I am relieved that most people selected "you are not being unreasonable" option.

Today was disgusting. The UK should never be this warm. Even just imagine how revolting and unhygienic everyone is walking around covered in sweat.

I think walking around sweaty is the least of our problems . . .

Not if you are elderly, an infant, unwell, working especially physical labour.

or live in a top floor flat or in a tower block

its Hot in summer and people are loosing their minds… honestly get a grip

The pandemic changed everything for me in terms of Mother Nature deciding our fate in the end. We aren’t going to be able to control a large scale pandemic if it takes hold in the same way that we can’t reverse climate change.

You’re freaking out about the heat but I’m more worried about us becoming an extremely cold country due to the weakening of El Niño. Being freezing cold and having the have the heating on 10 months of the year sounds much more concerning than hot summers.

Same and agree with last para

Catwoman8 · 11/07/2025 19:17

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 19:05

Each one has only lasted a couple of days though, it isn't like we have had a constant period of extreme temperatures.

I replied to a post saying it was 3 days of extreme temperatures, my point was it has been more than 3 days. I never said they are consecutive.

I suppose that depends where you are , and what you class as extreme. Where I am though, the v.high temps are only forecast for today/tomorrow/Sunday and then it's forecast for storms next week with lower temps. I am just fed up of people moaning about it , it is the middle of summer and its not unusual.

@CoastalCalm how are you doing now? I hope it's beginning to cool down wherever you are.

This is fine to mention, but the thread title is referring to the heat over a couple of days.

I don’t think that is the most telling thing, or it as they put it.

I have adjusted some behaviour, but it’s a personal thing for my dc pretty much. I still do stuff though that contributes to climate change, so not everything. Plus I have dc which is a factor already.

The thread title in itself says climate change is really starting to bite. I think climate change is starting to bite; we have seen incredibly high temperatures all across Europe these last few weeks. It’s hot here now, and this summer in this country is already facing drought; crops will fail and my garden is already yellow.

Now how much you want to attribute that to “it’s just summer get over it” is up to you. Los Angeles disappeared in a fire storm just months ago, half of Canada and Europe was on fire last summer and this summer has only just begun. So it’s looking pretty clear where things are heading imo.

The sooner that Homo Sapiens has been wiped from the planet the better.

Lovely.
