To want to nip this in the bud ( LGBTQ views , child )

I’m after some advice really on how to approach this.

I have always been the type of person to support anyone to be who they are. I’ve never shied away or shielded my children from the world - very much a ‘love is love’ person and always encouraged my children to support those who need it and be inclusive ( in terms of people being bullied , disabilities etc too ) .

My youngest is going into high school ( 11 ) . Over the past few months I’ve noticed a few comments such as “ there are 2 genders “ , “ I don’t support LGBTQ “ . I’ve addressed this in the moment . But recently he found out his new school has an LGBTQ assembly on a monthly basis and he has started saying he doesn’t want to go because “ he doesn’t support it” . I sat down and had a chat with him , I explained to him that it isn’t really his place to choose to not agree with it - it’s not a choice , i explained it as he could say he doesn’t agree with people eating meat as that is a choice he would be making , but someone’s sexuality is their feelings and not a choice.

I am sure comments will allow me to explain more how the conversation went from my side so I won’t drag this post on with that but his comments were unnerving :

  • he believes someone chooses to be gay , they can control it but they choose it
  • we can choose who we fall in love with
  • if a friend of his told him he was gay he would still be friends with them but not as good because they chose to be gay and he doesn’t support it.

I know he is very young and he doesn’t understand and has things to learn. He is the sweetest boy and the way he said these things sounded scripted as though he has heard others say this . I know he is a child and it’s my job that guide him and that’s the advice I’m asking for , how do I address this? I’m not saying I need him to go around advocating I just don’t want these views becoming ingrained and he becomes the reason another student who is struggling, struggles more. I know I may be overreacting but this age and as the years go on is a time that he can be heavily influenced . He’s a quiet, sweet boy and I do believe he could be heavily influenced.

Another concerning thing is that when I asked him where he had heard all this and where it comes from he said his Dad .

She's wrong.

And most transgender people don't agree with her.

But of course as a TERF you'll trawl the internet looking for examples of transgender people taking these sorts of positions and share them repeatedly, because you're very committed to making transgender people look as bad as possible. You're no different from Reform voters who obsessively share and repeat stories about migrant crime.

You don't need to trawl the Internet to know about Dr Upton. The tribunal has been widely reported on in the media.

A doctor stating he will violate the consent of a female patient is making himself look bad with no help required from me.

He's not the only one to say he's a biological female it's just a bimirire worrying when a doctor thinks this rather someone like India Willoughby

There's a lot of playing the player, not the ball going on @Sabire9

How about you debate the points instead of trying to smear everyone?

spannasaurus · 10/07/2025 21:07

In the Sandie Peggie tribunal Dr Upton who is a man who identifies as a woman stated under oath that he was a biological female.

He also said that if a female patient specifically requested a female doctor he would still treat her.

"I'm not sure how many assemblies there were, but she very influenced by an activist teacher at school and transitioned"

You absolutely CAN believe this deranged story by a poster who has posted obsessively on this topic on mumsnet - thousands and thousands words trashing transgender people and anyone and everyone who supports their right to exist. 😂

One day if I've got a few hours to waste, I'll go through their mumsnet posts and make a list of all their stories about transgender 'wrongdoings' they've apparently personally witnessed/experienced/heard about. They're legion.

And I've spoken about my cousins child often.

You can check that out too while you're at it.

Look, I know some of you are being desperate to make out none of this is happening, but it happened to our family.

Is her story and lived experience not valid or something?

Mischance · 10/07/2025 21:13

Your child will inevitably be influenced by both of you and it does no harm for a child to learn that two people can live happily together with different views. But when it is something factually inaccurate rather than an opinion then it becomes more problematical.

You cannot stop your OH influencing your child with his views any more than he can stop you with yours. You two need to hold a conversation about this.

On another note I absolutely disagree with the assembly that his school holds. It is ridiculous. I would demand a heterosexual assembly ... but how silly that would be. An assembly about kindness to all ... now that would make sense.

@Ereshkigalangcleg

"Being “T” or “Q” involves a disputed claim about reality"

No it doesn't.

Transgender people know what their biological sex is. They just feel their gender identity isn't congruent with their biological sex. As gender identity is a psychological and social construct this is not a denial of 'reality'.

Exactly, but just goes to show how me-centric people are these days!

And this is the 'be kind' brigade that come out with things like this. I have no words.

No kids don’t transition after lgbtq assemblies. There is far more to it as you well know.

Honestly, I might be going against the grain but I'd come down hard on him

If he was being racist, or saying that women deserve to be raped, it would be disgusting. This is also.

What hes saying is unacceptable - I'd be checking his internet history and watching social media as Andrew tate is bound to have slipped in there.

I'm not saying your child is bigoted at all, op, I want to be clear. But what hes saying is bigoted and needs punishment. And to be told he will be in that assembly and be polite and respectful to those who are different from him. Nip this in the bud, before it gets worse x

This! 👏

No idea if this will truly help but there are certain films/tv programmes you could watch with him (on top of talking to his dad and trying to address it in other ways!)
Off the top of my head, pride is a very emotional film, it's a sin, the imitation game..

An LGBT assembly once a month seems like a lot? Maybe there's a reason his school are doing this, like lots of pupils with this same attitude?

It's a Sin (brilliant though it is) is absolutely not suitable for an 11-year old! Would you want your 11-year old watching extremely graphic representations of intercourse, whether heterosexual or homosexual?

So tedious. Nobody attending an LGBTQ assembly is going to suddenly decide to do either so stop scaremongering. This is not what this thread is about, start your own.

My cousin's child did.

I'm not sure how many assemblies there were, but she very influenced by an activist teacher at school and transitioned. She took testosterone a while, but thankfully didn't have any surgery.

A few years later she detransitioned - she realised that her problems were not about being 'trans'. Unfortunately been left with significant health problems because of her time taking T.

So yes. Tragically it does happen.

DonnaBanana · 10/07/2025 20:51

This sort of assembly will only backfire like the nonstop Christian assemblies in the 80s totally put me off religion entirely. If you keep ramming propaganda down the throats of non believers it won’t convert them. The best thing is to have good LGBTQ teachers and role models who are present in school life but not preaching it as a cause.

Bikergran · 10/07/2025 20:49

It's taken you this long to realise you're married to a homophobe? HE'S the one you need to talk to!!

Do I need to remind you that you didn't start this thread, you highjacked it.

@Slightyamusedandsilly “Not to mention being force fed heteronormativity all the time. I mean, it's mainstream, I get it”

What does this mean? That’s there’s something strange about heterosexuality?

The difference is nobody who believes in Christmas ends up having their breasts removed or taking cancer drugs that cause humungous bodily changes ending in sterilisation and early menopause.

So take your kids off to the private sector or Trump’s USA, many parents welcome inclusive, informative and supportive assemblies for all kids which are used for all sorts of things. My kids had to suck up Christian nonsense none of us believe in on a loop for 7 years in the only state school available to us. They survived.

Definitely. Not to mention being force fed heteronormativity all the time. I mean, it's mainstream, I get it. But if it was so natural, why do they need to do the brainwashing? So 1/30th of the time they counteract it with LGBTQ. Big deal.
