😁

I agree. It can come across as smug and superior even if not intentional.

"Wow , Just ,Wow"
"Well you should nice"
"You sound like hard work"
"What did the Police say when you phoned them" (knowing fine well the OP hasn't phoned them"
"What did your DH say" (to MIL 'cos y'know you cannot have an adult conversation with a member of your extended family)
"I couldn't bring myself to get worked up about this"

A selection of GTF MN sayings
And yes "Use your words" is up there

Sunshineismyfavourite · 07/07/2025 17:44

I agree so much! The phrase use your words was for young children who would point and grunt or simply whinge when they wanted something and you know that they are capable of speech. That makes sense to say 'use your words.'

For an adult it is patronising crap. And I have seen plenty threads with this phrase used on here. Annoying!

smallglassbottle · 07/07/2025 17:42

I always imagine the person saying this is a Penelope Perfect primary school teacher who's never been drunk and who always manages to catch the TA having a crafty fag outside the storage hut.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/07/2025 17:41

It's used in an ableist way at neurodiverse adults (and by extension, is an ableist insult to direct at a neurotypical person). So they can fuck right off.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/07/2025 17:38

I prefer the Scottish version, OP - ‘Get tae fuck!’ Has a slightly spicier ring to it, I feel.

Haha you’ve used yours quite effectively!

But there are a series of posts by totally wet lettuces who refuse to say a word at the time yet come and foam at the mouth on MN about a situation that would have been swiftly resolved at the time if they’d bothered to speak up. I’ve never used the term ‘use your words’ but it does seem appropriate sometimes given it’s what you’d say to a toddler who’s struggling to say what they want!

I tell my husband to use his big boy words when he's being annoying and toddler like 🤣🤣

Funnywonder · 07/07/2025 17:34

It’s not an expression we use in NI, but I see it on here all the time and I HATE it. HATE it. However ‘get tae fuck’ is an expression I can definitely get on board with🤣🤣

So many people just will not communicate properly like adults. They deserve a 'use your words'.

Nope they deserve to be told in an adult way

Swearing is words. I use my sweary words. I will not fucking stop even if it makes someone on a thread faint clean away and need the smelling salts.

MyQuirkyTraybake · 07/07/2025 17:29

I think it's an ironic thing to say when women are ignored and spoken over so much. You get tired of using your words and no one bloody listening.

tipsyraven · 07/07/2025 17:25

I loathe it and it is up there with ‘You do you’ as far as I am concerned.

Owt · 07/07/2025 17:24

I hate this too, it simply makes the poster feel big and clever at the expense of the OP. It’s patronising and a bit cringy. They’d never say it in real life to someone.

partyetiquette · 07/07/2025 17:24

Hankunamatata · 07/07/2025 17:10

And sweary posts make people look like ignorant twats...........

🤣🤣🤣🤣 swearing and ignorance is not connected

I can’t recall any posts that have included that phrase. Are you having a bad day op?

Put it into search. There's millions!

HelpMeGetThrough · 07/07/2025 17:20

I’m with you OP, only patronising wankers say it. They deserve a fat lip.

Lioncub2020 · 07/07/2025 17:19

It's a phrase that is deliberately patronising.

HeddaGarbled · 07/07/2025 17:18

But so many women don’t.

My husband did blah blah, I told him that was fine, AIBU to be upset?

Yes, yes, you are - use your words!

SerafinasGoose · 07/07/2025 17:17

I love this post with this particular screen handle. Brilliant! (and if it isn't party etiquette it bloody well should be).

I agree that it's an infuriating phrase: not only infantile but also nonsensical. Words are not 'ours'. Language exists independently of us. By these criteria, anyone using these particular words comes across as none-too switched on, so the attempt to patronise is at least amusingly ironic.

See also:

'What did he say when you told him to stop doing that?/pack his bags?/leave the key on the table?/report him to the police?' - delete as appropriate.

Or the perennial metaphysical question 'why did you have a baby with this twat?'

The baby exists. The ship has fucking sailed.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 07/07/2025 17:17

It’s in the same lines as saying indoor voices and gentle hands to kids.

Just say what you mean - be quiet and stop hitting usually for the above!

WonderingWanda · 07/07/2025 17:15

Well I do agree that "Use your words" is a bollocms phrase whether used at adults or children....it's so condescending. I always told my kids to "Speak properly" or "Speak up for yourself".

However, I have to confess I hate the expression "Get to fuck" I love a good swear but this makes no fucking sense whatsoever. Where is fuck and why do I need to get there?

selkieselkie · 07/07/2025 17:13

partyetiquette · 07/07/2025 16:58

It's the phrase "use your words" it's designed for children , you could say to another adult
"Why don't you have a conversation"
Or
"Listen mate, just fucking tell him"

Use your words is infantilising

I don't think I've ever used the phrase but, if I'm ever tempted, I will inwardly chastise myself and say "listen mate, just fucking tell him" instead. Thanks OP!
