... to think that Nigel Farage will be our next PM?

Or, more accurately: AIBU to be afraid that truly nasty piece of work Nigel Farage who has, by all accounts, always been utterly useless at (or at least completely uninterested in) the actual business end of governing will be our next PM because everyone is so fed up with all the other parties being, variously or all at once, so corrupt, incompetent and useless that we've collectively abandoned all hope? I will never vote for Farage, who is a horrible man, or any of his party which keeps having to fire people for being just a teensy bit too overtly racist - but it seems from the polls that for many people the choice against the status quo outweighs what we may be choosing. (For an example, I can't believe that Farage's stated position that DOGE in the US didn't go far enough with its swinging cuts to the social safety net would be popular with UK voters who recently elected a government on the basis that it would reverse years of Tory austerity... not that that's worked out so well...)

It is on Sky News this evening that Farage has confirmed he would deport female asylum seekers to Afghanistan.

On children beung deported to Afghanistan he said he'd "have to think about that."

The man is utterly reprehensible.

This would be in contravention of international law. You can't deport people to a country if it means certain death. Deporting Afghan women back to the Taliban means certain death. The man is a psychopath and so is anyone who hears this and continues to support him.

I would love Nigel Farage to be the next Prime Minister. I think he would sort immigration, cut welfare and lower taxes

If he does a quarter of what he has said he would in terms of economic policy, the bond markets would have hysterics and the country would either go bankrupt or he'd be replaced within days. It would be exactly like Truss on steroids.

Farage is all we've got at the moment because he hasn't yet succeeded or failed. Labour and the Conservatives have both failed. And that's the essential and desperate problem we all face. Because of their incompetence, cowardice, ideological madness (Ed Milliband I'm looking as you), venal and dishonest behaviour and greed. On both sides. We have low grade politicians who give into temptation to benefit themselves like Angela Raynar who has thrown away the chance to be PM for the deposit on flat. And we sit there slagging them all off in accordance with our own prejudices in our own little echo chambers so no one normal would ever want to put themselves on the line as a politician because its not worth the abuse.

No idea what the solution is though.

Farage really isn't all we've got because he can't be an option any more than collective suicide is an option.

Well, he didn't leave politics did he? he stayed drawing a 100k per year from his hated EU, whilst getting done for fiddling EU expenses.

He is a snake, lied and said "I bought a house in Clacton...." No, his partner did, avoiding 2nd home SLDT but of course lives there.

Lied saying he'll stop ALL boats inside 2weeks, now its 2 weeks after legislation passed..... so years then....

Will return women back to Afghanistan, send money to the Taliban, who killed 457 British soldiers...

He is a grade A xxxx

Well tell that to the poster I was replying to who was complaining that he quit politics straight after the Brexit vote.

Of course they do, because they're all run by people with lots of money who will pay a lot less tax under Reform.

Farage is good at stirring and talking things down, but when he's asked for a solution he runs away. Also - Brexit wasn't mismanaged; it was just that when May, Johnson etc realised what Brexit actually meant to firms and the economy they tried to minimise the damage and avoid a hard Brexit. Turns out you can't eat or pay the bills with sovereignty.

Brexit absolutely wasn't mismanaged. It just so happens that you can't polish a turd. The most honest thing Johnson ever said as PM was 'Fuck business', because indeed, Brexit was a giant 'fuck you' to British businesses.

Beth Rigby did today, he collapsed like a pack of cards, quite funny.

That's great to hear but it should be relentless. Everyday. From every journalist with a conscience.

Farage knows that you can galvanise a disaffected public by giving them a common enemy to get exercised about. It's a blatantly cynical tactic. It's exactly how Hitler rose to power.

Totally agree with the pp who says that the media rarely challenge him because, like Trump, he is continual clickbait. Farage is extremely media-savvy, but behind the clickbait statements, there is nothing. Well nothing more than small-mindedness, malice, greed and entitlement.

Populist parties have an agenda to not only destroy the EU but actually Europe itself. It's not just Reform. It's all of its European avatars who are bankrolled by Russia. The RN in France got into hot water because Russian banks bailed them out some years ago. Brexit was welcomed by the Kremlin ffs. They cracked open the bubbly when it happened. And twice when Trump won. Doesn't that tell voters something?

I work in a now Reform council and they have no idea what they are doing. We have a committee process that they seem to think is a joke, don't want us working on anything to do with climate change or people's basic rights and try and constantly overturn decisions without any legal basis. It's causing us additional work to spell out the basics to them. I don't think they will get in as they will make a mess of their current power and people will move on.

I suspected that was the case. It’s useful to hear it from the horse’s mouth.

I agree he will be the next PM. The mainstream parties continue to ignore and dismiss the concerns of the working classes and their lives get poorer and more hopeless. Labour treat the poor as a problem to solve. Farage - whatever you think of him, snake oil salesman or not - is speaking to them directly. That’s very powerful politically. It’s what Trump did when everyone laughed at the mere idea he’d ever be president. It’ll happen here.

I agree with this. We watched his conference speech yesterday and my DH said that he is not only saying what people want to hear, but that what people are saying in the street. People have legitimate concerns about the way this country is being run and he is definitely tapping into that.

Brexit was hashed out badly in the government and the H of C. He wasnt an MP and he did a deal with Boris to keep Jeremy Corbyn out. He stupidly thought that the British government and the British MPs could be relied on to act in Britain's interests. As this turned out to be wrong he's had to set up Reform. Do you feel he has to be in charge of everyone and that's the only way the job is going to get done properly? Because it sounds like you think someone who at the time was unelected should have been running the Brexit negotiations!!

There is a part of me that is glad there are now Reform Councils. Let's see whether they deliver on their promises. I suspect they won't (and can't).

The worrying thing about this for me is that it's as though the media want Farage in No.10 because he's the visual equivalent of clickbait. Hence the endless QT appearances. Ir was the same with Johnson and also Trump. They're entertainment rather than boring politicians so they're endlessly promoted and rarely challenged.

Of course they do, because they're all run by people with lots of money who will pay a lot less tax under Reform.

Gowlett · 06/09/2025 14:26

Farage could most definitely be the next PM. Look at Trump.

hotelinfo · 06/09/2025 14:24

I'm not arguing he needed to be PM. But, let's be honest, the referendum would never have happened at all were in not for Farage. When UKIP got the result Farage has campaigned for - through his whole adult life - you would think, he would seize on that momentum. You would think he'd be there, campaigning for 'the people' who he manipulated. Not resign the next day!

Quirkswork · 06/09/2025 11:29

hotelinfo · 06/09/2025 10:49

He was leader of UKIP. If you want to influence policy, you stay in politics. You don't resign at a critical moment. Brexit was Farage's life ambition! You would think, having achieved that, he'd be more galvanised than ever to stay in politics. But no.

Because he knew the whole thing would be the utter shit show it has been and he didn't want to be associated with the messy practicalities.

The man is a snake.

The day after Brexit, Farage resigned from UKIP and resigned from political life.

Si no good him whinging that they didn't do Brexit right. He ran away.

Instead he preferred to pontificate and snipe on LBC and GB News.

He to be dragged to run as MP for Clacton. How much time has he actually spent in his constituency?

He would run for the hills if people are stupid enough to vote for him as PM. Or rather, run for a more lucrative job in US media, where he can snipe from the sidelines and stir up hatred, while not actually being held accountable for anything of substance. He is a businessman and media grifter.

Funny. I think you give him more power than the power he actually had at the time (which was none).

I think sadly, it may come to pass that Reform are voted in, but I think If this happens, Farage will quickly resign. He is nothing but a media grifter, he won't want to be actually held to account for anything in actual government. He's only interested in stirring up hatred and division. He knows that 'talking the talk' is not the same thing as 'walking the walk.' He'll be off to a media career in the US in a flash.

Just like the day after the Brexit vote. Imagine, this man achieved his lifelong dream of Brexit. So come on Nigel, 'Take back control' then. Now is your moment - show us all the wonders of this great new Brexit dawn you've persuaded people to vote for.... No. What does he promptly do? He resigns the next day! You couldn't make it up.

Resigns from what though? He wasn't in government or an MP so had no power to do anything and instead it was left to the imbeciles in the H of C who made our position so weak that we just had to roll over. Did you think they would allow Nigel Farage to sort the deal out? Or have any say in the matter at all?

They want to give money to the Taliban! The Taliban!
After the recent earthquake in Afghanistan, women aren't being dug out of the rubble because the men won't touch them and Farage wants to give these evil swine money.
