... to think that Nigel Farage will be our next PM?

Or, more accurately: AIBU to be afraid that truly nasty piece of work Nigel Farage who has, by all accounts, always been utterly useless at (or at least completely uninterested in) the actual business end of governing will be our next PM because everyone is so fed up with all the other parties being, variously or all at once, so corrupt, incompetent and useless that we've collectively abandoned all hope? I will never vote for Farage, who is a horrible man, or any of his party which keeps having to fire people for being just a teensy bit too overtly racist - but it seems from the polls that for many people the choice against the status quo outweighs what we may be choosing. (For an example, I can't believe that Farage's stated position that DOGE in the US didn't go far enough with its swinging cuts to the social safety net would be popular with UK voters who recently elected a government on the basis that it would reverse years of Tory austerity... not that that's worked out so well...)

I would love Nigel Farage to be the next Prime Minister. I think he would sort immigration, cut welfare and lower taxes

Of course he would. Keep telling yourself that.

I'm very concerned this could happen. Could the new party take some reform voters? I'm not so sure but we could hope, I guess! It could be a sleepwalk situation where people think it won't happen then it does (a bit like Brexit imo)

What is it that concerns you?

Untrue then?

Wishful thinking probably.

So you’re a Farage fan? I probably wouldn’t vote for either of them unless I really like their manifesto. but I’m curious why people think Farage has better chance then corbyn?

To keep Farage out of number 10, Labour have to get a grip on immigration, I think a lot of Reform popularity is really a protest vote on this issue alone.

But Starter could personally stand on the cliffs of Dover with a howitzer, laughing manically as he shoots and sinks approaching dinghies with terrifying precision and many of the posters on here would complain he was soft on immigration. I agree they need to get a grip, but that means sorting out the chaos of the home office so claims get processed faster (and rejected claimants get sent back!), working with the French to curb the illegal boats. And directing police resources into disrupting the gangs involved in people snuggling and the illegal employment of people working in the UK. All of which is boring when you want an Australia style.solution or Alligator Alcatraz. And in the short term it generates headlines which make people think things have gotten worse (more raids on shops illegally employing people or laundering money/ more arrests of people smugglers means more stories about those things and worse crime stats)
There HAVE been noticeably more arrests and police disruption of criminal gangs. It needs doing so good. But it would never be seen by people already angry at Labour as a reason not to vote reform. So it's.sensible.from a governing perspective. But not politically much help. The flashy stuff (that video they did) looks tasteless to people like me and won't convince anti-inmigration types even though it's exactly what they say they want

No chance of that, already there is talk of a govt rebellion against Starmer’s proposed “one in, one out” policy

If they had reformed PIP that might have seen off Nigel Farage. They caved in to the lefties. Waste of time.

AnotherGreyMorning · 06/07/2025 13:52

Farage definitely will be the next PM.

Suckers.

Well most of the young people i know love Reform…apart from a few militant lefties!

Do they come up to you and talk about how much they love reform? Or is it that when you start talking about it they either agree or don't say anything? I am sure the young people in your life that voice disagreement love being called militant lefties. But yup, it's the left exclusively that is full of hatred/bile and insults people who disagree with them.

Like all politicians then?

This gets said a lot.

There is a spectrum though, isn't there? Yes, politicians of all stripes have been known to say one thing and do another, to a greater or lesser degree. Does this mean that we might as well just throw the baby out with the bath water and vote for the guy with the least integrity because "oh well, they're all at it"? NF has been shown to outright lie, lie by omission, mislead the electorate and shirk his political responsibilities in favour of his own financial interests repeatedly.

The UK isn't fucked. I have lived in lots of places and I still think the UK is.overall one of the safest, friendliest places I have lived in. I walked down the street early in the morning and everyone I passed (mostly dog walkers) smiled and said good morning. No one tried to rob me. People still say (usually) thank you to bus drivers (and the area I live in isn't particularly rich, it's mixed income quite diverse).
Our economy has struggled since Brexit but there are still emerging businesses in important industries and intelligent university students working on things which will come to fruition in 10 years time. We are still a top 10 economy. When a relative broke their leg really badly in the garden they shouted for help.and a neighbour heard them, called an ambulance who arrived and took them to hospital where they received world class treatment. It wouldn't even occur to him or me to be grateful for that.

There are loads of issues -we have poor productivity, since Brexit private equity has been buying up businesses and land, the NHS is strand often provides substandard care, we have too many people out of work through I'll health, house prices are too high and being driven higher by banks and foreign investors etc etc. But we are not fucked. It needs to get better but could be a lot worse basically.

The stars are aligning. He will seize his chance. He’s all talk. He’s a grifter. He won’t be able to do anything he’s claiming he will. He spouts populist views repeating what the man on the street wants to hear. Dangerous times ahead.

Like all politicians then?

The issue remains that Reform UK won’t be able to reform the UK. It’s fucked, and Nigel Farage isn’t the solution to our problems. He’s a Grifter, as is Keir Starmer.

I also suggest Mary Beard for the next PM!

I agree. Besides, he was fab on I'm a celebrity.

And completely shit as an MP, but as long as he was good on I’m a celebrity, that’s all that matters.

Out of touch one moment - dangerous populist saying what people want to hear the next... which is it?

Both. Completely out of touch with reality because Eliot was right - humankind cannot bear too much reality. They’re selling gullible people an unattainable fantasy, much like Johnson’s sunlit uplands.
