And 2 tier sentencing?

And if so who is driving this?

And for what end goal?

There is two-tier policing, but not in the way Reformers claim there is.
Black people are policed far more harshly than white people. This is the two-tier policing that is actually backed by data and isn't new, and definitely not something Kier Starmer has initiated.

Surely the incidence of forceful of arrest is directly correlated to the amount of aggression shown by the individual, and the type of crime they are accused of? Eg violent crimes would surely be more likely to lead to forceful arrest?

And also the demographic of the individuals who are more likely to commit certain crimes would mean that they are more likely to be stopped/searched? Eg males more likely to commit violent crimes and knife crimes.

There is definitely preferential treatment for some groups - child rape gangs weren’t investigated for fear of appearing racist or disrupting community cohesion, Jewish people are moved on from the hate marches because being Jewish is a provocation but people chant for Hamas, hezbollah and the Houthis with impunity, it’s basically been decriminalised to have images of child sex abuse, trans rights and LGBT groups seem to have the police as their enforcers with a chilling effect on free speech.

the police seem to have their priorities all wrong

DCorMe · 05/07/2025 19:03

When the sentencing guidelines were amended for IIOC offences to not be punishable with a prison sentence and starting point rehabilitation, I knew we were in trouble as a nation.
The conservatives were in power and knew this had exploded as a crime type but didn’t resource it appropriately.

the likelihood of reoffending is high and escalation to further offending is higher.

we need consequence as well as rehabilitation in my view

There is an underlying feeling of unfairness of policing amongst different groups. It is part of the cause of much of the social unrest.

It should be possible to discuss this as adults without resorting to passive aggression.
.

Just spit it out and say what you mean. Go on, you’ll feel better.

Social unrest is only going to increase, in ten years time its going to look like Northen Ireland did, nationwide.

But we're not allowed to talk about it.

BlueJuniper94 · 05/07/2025 18:58

Now sort these responses by political tribe

OneTC · 05/07/2025 18:56

In the 2 tier keir sense? No. It is very obvious to me that the majority demographic of which I am part of is not widely or meaningfully discriminated against.

In the sense that the police are racist, lazy and prone to profiling then yes of course.

It's obvious what you're trying to get at, but the answer is no.

If you're genuinely interested in our justice system look at what has happened to it over the past 15 years and how it's got in this state. I don't know the Tories have the cheek to criticise Labour over law and order

I think you meant to ask ChatGPT a question. This is mumsnet, you need a point.

What’s wrong with the op’s question? It is no more or less than many others on here.

jaws33 · 05/07/2025 18:51

And if your rich you often get away with crime

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/07/2025 18:50

OK let’s look at this. I grew up in South London. Pretty much all my friends dabbled in various drugs. The young Black men, ganja. The young white men, anything from that to E. Driving around, stopped all the time with my Asian and Black friends. Never, not once, with my white friends. Now if they were searched, the crime statistics would have all the young Black men down as criminals. None of the white men, who were doing worse.

It’s a vicious circle for young Black men.

Of course there is.

Paedophiles downloading abuse material never receive custodial sentences. Why is that? Well I went down the rabbit hole on that one and our very own Kier Starmer advised the sentencing council that these sex offenders were not a danger to the public.

Post a meme on twitter though and you'll have about 15 coppers at your door.

In the UK we prosecute online offences (people postings crap on social media) thousands of times more than say in Russia. Look it up.

Any sources of evidence to all this that you'd like to share?

jaws33 · 05/07/2025 18:49

Not sure it's two tier but I can't understand why pedos often don't get jail time. And people who kill or injure people with cars often get very low sentences.

PandoraSocks · 05/07/2025 18:48

@Watermelonice as posters have given excellent examples of two tier policing, perhaps you would like to elaborate on what you meant by it and what you think the "end game" is?

Welliesandtweed · 05/07/2025 18:47

SpottyAardvark · 05/07/2025 18:35

Of course there is.

A young white woman of stereotypical middle class dress & appearance driving an expensive sports car is very unlikely to be stopped by the police. But a young black man driving the same car…

How many white, middle class women commit drug or violent crimes?

NeedForSpeed · 05/07/2025 18:45

No.

I think there are different perspectives though, which makes people feel they are being treated differently.

The reality is that if you're a complete tool to the police you can expect to be treated like a tool until you can show you can behave decently. If you behave decently you won't be treated like a tool.

People who act like tools get most upset about their behaviour not being tolerated.

How do I know? I was a police officer for a decade. Met many tools and many more decent people.

This. This two tier policing is ongoing.

taxguru · 05/07/2025 18:43

There's definitely "two tier" policing in the way that the Irish travelling communities really aren't "policed" at all unless it's a serious GBH or murder. The police are definitely scared of challenging them.

Welliesandtweed · 05/07/2025 18:43

JHound · 05/07/2025 18:33

There is and has been for a long time. But not the way people currently day there is. The data clearly shows the imbalance in things like stop and search rates, imprisonment rates, average sentencing etc. Even what mugshots the police choose to release to the media and what the media choose to share with the public.

But most prefer to see their emotions and feelings as facts instead of analysing the data.

It's not an imbalance, it's based on the demographic of who is more likely to commit the crime!

Exactly what @JohnnyLuLus said. This is the well documented two tier policing that has long existed in this country.

This all day long. And violence against women isn’t taken seriously at all. So policing is failing people of colour and women and working for the interests of white men. Is that the tiers you meant OP?

MidnightPatrol · 05/07/2025 18:38

I just think there is astonishingly little policing.

So many crimes seem to just be de-prioritised to the point there’s not even a disincentive to commit them now.

As for ‘two tier’ - no idea, seems like a bit of a meme to be honest.
