Michael Jackson was a paedophile. Why does the local school choose one of his songs for the kids to perform to?

I also have a friend whose little boy has learnt all his moves and she puts MJ on for him to dance to.

I don’t understand, hearing his music makes me feel sick.

Chris Brown was convicted of beating Rihana. People were queueing to see him the other day

Woody Allen films are still held in high regard

Lovecraft held some vile views but we still enjoy Cthulu stories
.

I was going to mention Chris Brown. I couldn't believe the amount of women who were posting online about being at his concert but it's fine to overlook the fact his is a convicted DV abuser because of his "artistry" apparently. No doubt they'll also be in the crowd for Diddys 2047 comeback tour 🙄.

I'd also bung Roman Polanski in with Woody Allen. I do sympathise to some degree that he suffered an appallingly tragic loss. But sadly so do many, many other people and it does not give anyone carte blanche to abuse a child.

How would your partner know ?

His friends went as part of bands. They told him

SquirrelMadness · 05/07/2025 10:10

I haven't read the full thread yet and I'm not sure I want to, I find it very upsetting when people are determined not to believe he was a paedophile.

I totally agree with you OP, it's incredibly inappropriate. I don't like hearing his music at all as it makes me think of all the little boys he damaged irreparably. I'd find it really disturbing to see children dancing to his music. There are so many other artists they could choose. I think I would complain.

If people want to listen to his music in private, fine. But not everyone can separate the music from the paedophile that produced it. Don't force other people to listen to it in public.

Hanovercrosse · 05/07/2025 10:08

You’re being ridiculous
We did Thriller at mine because the dance routine is incredible

So you want teachers to check the backgrounds of everry single artist, musician, sports person, celebrity of any description to check the trial by media of what is acceptable or not, and he was not charged was he?

Whose criteria would make them acceptable, would it be by committee, smoke signals, drawing straws?

MJ wssent just any musician was he ?
He was a superstar known across the world not only for music but for his contentious and Frankly weird behaviour.

I don’t think a lot of checks need to be made for this one. Everyone knows

Did Elvis 'groom' Priscilla? Was he dodgy, should we not listen to his music?
David Bowie had sex with underage girls.
The Rolling Stones records have Bill Wyman on them.
Unfortunately predatory and exploitative male behaviour has only recently been called out, the history of music and most other fields is littered with examples of it.

I don't believe all this stuff. And actually my then partner knew kids who had been to Neverland as part of bands. They said there was nothing untoward going on, only that he had a deeper voice than youd expect. And as others say, people like Bowie or even Bill Wyman and the stones have obvious relationships with under age but they are revered.

How would your partner know ?

It used to be common to marry at 12 ...

Not on the 1990s it didn't.

Because the timeline was all over the place and non sensical. It was easily proven that the place where they said they were abused didn't exist at the time, MJ was not even in the country at the time of alleged incident of abuse, and the many other people who were implicated as victims or witnesses haven't supported this version of events. Dates of alleged incidents vs ages of alleged victims don't align. Multiple financial motives and dodgy connections. Its actually quite interesting.

Interesting, but a bit vague. A few discrepancies of time and date wouldn't seem that important to me, especially given how young the alleged victims were at the time. Neither would the fact that some "people who were implicated as victims or witnesses" didn't go along with it. I have an open mind about it all but at this stage it's probably unlikely we'll ever know the truth.

So all the fathers who let their children into their beds are doing something wrong?

Oh I forgot, it's only men who are the bad people.

Are you for real?
there's a massive difference between a parent sharing a bed with their child, and a millionaire man completely emotionally abusing kids and parents, grooming a child he has zero ties too, sleeping in bed with them, abusing them and tossing them aside as soon as they hit puberty. MULTIPLE TIMES. MULTIPLE KIDS. The man was absolutely vile.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 05/07/2025 10:01

I think it's a valid discussion - is there a statute of limitations on things like this? And where do we draw the line; people actually prosecuted of doing dreadful things? People accused of doing dreadful things without prosecution? People randomly accused of something with no proof (on the 'no smoke without fire' principle?) People who are still alive? People with victims who are still alive? People with victims whose children/grandchildren/people who knew them are still alive?

PassTheLemonDrizzle · 05/07/2025 10:00

I think the level of fame is relevant. Savile, Lost Prophets, Rolf Harris and Gary Glitter etc. did not have the international or cultural reach of MJ. Not even close! I was a kid in the 80s and at one point MJ was one of the most famous people in the world. For example, our neighbours hosted a Thriller party when the video was released on TV so everyone could watch it together. It’s hard to explain to anyone that wasn’t there just how ubiquitous he and his music were at the height of his fame. There was no other musician really comparable apart from maybe Elvis. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong but just to give some wider context.

Surely you csn see it's very different a father sleeping in the same bed with his young child
Than some oddball thst isn't related to them,?
Would tou allow your small child to go for sleepovers with a random neighbour becsuse he seemed childlike.?

YANBU

I feel the same about Jerry Lee Lewis - married his 13 year old cousin. Sick.

Hiding in plain sight

Elvis did the same, grooming a 14 year old

People saying the Leaving Neverland allegations were 'debunked' can I ask what they mean by this? Not being goady, I'm genuinely curious. I know they didn't win their case in court, but proving allegations of this nature legally is very difficult. To me the men's stories seemed very compelling but I'm open to evidence to the contrary.

The prophet of a major world religion was very much a paedophile according to current western thinking.

That doesn't stop over a billion people worshipping in his name every day.

Human mores and behaviour evolve over time and across cultures. What was acceptable 1400 or even 40-50 years ago is now seen in a very different light. Some brilliant individuals were often warped or damaged in other ways - especially MJ.

Right but MJ wasent born thousands of years ago was he so i dont.think
we can compare him to people thst were.

I think you have to separate the artist from the behaviour. As realistically, if you don’t, how far do you take it?

You can avoid MJ - fair enough. But what about a band where the eg bassist, or the writer or producer, was convicted of a serious crime? Music produced by Phil Spector is still pretty widespread.

Though having said that, I think LostProphets are probably beyond rehabilitation.

A lot of artists are absolute shits in their personal life.

he’s dead. Nothing you do now will have any impact on him.

Yes but it may have an impact on his victims. They should get some respect
