To think sending postcards is a massive chore?

Whenever we go on holiday, family member says to my DC (in my hearing) "make sure to send me a postcard"
I have come to find that sending a postcard generally involves 4 steps, all of which are a chore

  1. find the postcard
  2. write it
  3. find a stamp - usually never sold by the postcard shop
  4. find the postbox

All of these tasks to be achieved whilst wrangling DC abroad in unfamiliar areas while they all want to do something different to each other and me. Family member is a single traveller for whom postcard sourcing is probably a nice way to spend an afternoon pottering. For me holidays are a combination of DC : complaining about the weather, wanting an ice cream, needing the toilet, wanting to buy X random cheap toy, being hungry, being thirsty, not wanting to visit whatever thing the country is famous for, wanting to go back to the pool etc

Throwing a postcard obstacle course into the mix is just a step too far

It's not a waste of time to write to someone!

Hear, hear.

HappydaysArehere · 20/07/2025 03:03

Used To send cards and then it got that I resented it. I felt it was something I just didn’t want to do and why should I have a chore while on holiday.
Luckily we don’t have to now as we don’t receive any these days. However, we receive what’s app photos and they are much more relevant.

MartinAynuss · 20/07/2025 01:41

And they say that the disabled have it bad

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/07/2025 01:28

I didn’t know anyone sent postcards any more! Maybe ex MIL sends them to the children but that’s about it.

I really don’t like sending postcards (didn’t when it was more commonly a thing) and I hate looking for souvenirs on holiday. I just would rather not be in the shops at all!

So much angst over a ridiculously small thing. Send it or don't send it but it's hardly onerous. You can describe everything as a massively difficult process- "oh god I had to make a cup of tea today. Drag a cup out of the cupboard, rummage out a tea bag, lug the kettle over to the sink, wrestle the tap on, wait while the kettle fills, then faff around while it boils. Heave the boiled kettle up to pour it into the mug. Pile over to the fridge to hunt for milk... all the whole wrangling children". But is all a bit ridiculous.

Oh, stop bloody whinging.

JeannieJo · 07/07/2025 10:04

I don’t send postcards often now but if I need to, I use one of the postcard apps e.g. Touchnote, and send a postcard with pictures of my DC or the family in the place I’m visiting and stand in front of a pretty or well-known tourist spot e.g. Eiffel Tower in Paris. They usually print and post them very quickly. Saves a ton of hassle and not very expensive!

Mushybut · 07/07/2025 09:22

Anyone “demand” anything of me, I ignore

Mushybut · 07/07/2025 09:22

“Massive chore”
”a lot of effort”

one postcard. One. But it when you’re buying an ice cream. Scribble it on plane home, give to your child to give to relative

or

just don’t bother

but it’s going to take most of us a lot of convincing to make us see this as a “lot of effort”

Oh come in it's a bit,but it's hardly like you have to trek up a mountain, solve a riddle to get the key to the entrance of the mystical maze, where the shopkeeper will let you through a hidden trap door if you say the right phrase and then you get your stamp, and then you're transported to the jungle and have to navigate to the post box.

It is surprisingly annoying. I don't blame OP for not wanting to do it and I think her relative is mildly cheeking for demanding it. I don't think OP should make a big drama and tell her relative she won't be doing it, she should just not do it and eventually they'll stop asking.

It is a lot of effort! Especially sending them from certain countries.

Because her reason was because it's too much effort, and it just isn't.

If she doesn't want to, nobody cares. But making out like it such an onerous task is a bit dramatic.

God we haven’t bothered sending postcards since the invention of whatssap! We used to receive a few too back in the day but there’s really no need now. They usually arrive at the recipients house long after you’re home anyway 😂
I also don’t bother writing any Christmas cards. Massive waste of resources imo and anyone I want to wish a happy Christmas to I will either do in person or pick up the phone and do it that way instead.

Onelifeonly · 05/07/2025 22:41

Feel like I've fallen into a time warp and gone back 15 to 20 years. Spent years loathing "having" to write postcards but no one I know has written one for a very long time. Apart from the hassle, they often didn't arrive till after you got back from holiday and they were so boring (to read, as well as write) anyway.

I just WhatsApp my photos with a message if I want to contact someone at home. And I'm no spring chicken!

Why are people giving the OP a hard time for not wanting to send postcards? She doesn't have to if she doesn't want to! People talking about her 'justifying herself', she shouldn't need to. Nobody is entitled to a postcard.

I live in Brighton. They’re everywhere

They're not everywhere in all seaside towns. It's great that Brighton has them 😊😊

Simonjt · 05/07/2025 19:07

I love a postcard, whenever we go away we also send one to our home to pop in a book so we can see where we went and when.

luckylavender · 05/07/2025 19:05

BusWankers · 05/07/2025 18:39

It's actually tricky to find postcards at the seaside, it's not guaranteed, and definitely fewer places selling them.

People say that about Christmas cards and yet you can find both everywhere.

They are pretty much obsolete nowadays - although they're prettier to look at than a text message!

Not exactly the same thing, but I remember a really old episode of Room 101, with Sanjeev Bhaskar as the guest.

He was complaining about when some of his elderly relatives gave him a pound note for a birthday present. He then had to pay for the bus fare into town, then buy a thank-you card and stamp, write it and post it, before paying for another bus fare to get home.

Aside from all of the time and effort, he calculated that thanking the relative for giving him a pound actually cost him more than £1!

Poonu · 05/07/2025 16:45

Don't send any then.

Morebroccoli · 05/07/2025 16:44

OP sounds like the type of SAHM who breaks down every chore she has into drawn out multistep processes and does everything far more than is necessary to prove that she's just as busy as people who work outside the home.

and gets incredibly angry and pissed off about it all

M777 · 05/07/2025 15:10

have to say I rarely send postcards now
use the apps only

however my DF and older relatives loved to send and receive cards

after he died I have several large full Victorian postcard albums, full, complete with their writing. Some written so small so include their whole trip itinerary.

and DF not only sent many, but bought multiple copies to keep. I’ve had so much fun looking through postcards of places we went together, and going back now and seeing how much they have changed. He had so many copies, a lot went to primary schools for kids letter writing practice to send him to parents , who I’m sure were surprised to receive postcards from
their kids from places and countries that no longer exist
