why is called the SCs home when it isn't?

I keep seeing this scenario.

Woman with her own house. She is paying for the bills. Her DP moves in. His kids come EOW. Why do so many people say it is the SC's home?

Who owns the property?

FairyCakesAndSprinklez · 04/07/2025 14:32

If this is all you’ve got to worry about then you must have a fairly easy life 🙄

WideawakeinSanDiego · 04/07/2025 14:31

It is his home but he doesn't own it unless the owner puts his name on the deeds.

HelloGreen · 04/07/2025 14:30

You’re just goading now OP.

Coffeeishot · 04/07/2025 14:30

I just wanted to say it is her house but their home.

Lots of people are cohabitating - it is no big surprise.

No mate. It’s not casual cohabiting when children are involved. No adult with an ounce of common sense or emotional intelligence would treat it as such. Moving in with someone with kids is a significant decision to be very carefully weighed.

If perchance you’ve massively fucked up some children’s lives with bad decision-making, own it instead of desperately arguing semantics around home ‘ownership’

cardycard · 04/07/2025 14:25

Only temporarily. She can ask him and his children to leave any time she wants

Yes, she can. And he would have to move out and into his own place. He has no rights if he has no ownership or is a lessee of a property. His children also have zero rights to the property.

Why do you keep asking? Do you need help in this regard?

WideawakeinSanDiego · 04/07/2025 14:28

Whoever owns the home has the final say on who lives there. That has always been the case.

Children don't own homes,, their home is wherever their parent or guardian resides.

cardycard · 04/07/2025 13:28

So because he moves in with someone into a house that he did not pay for, then suddenly it becomes his childrens home too?

Yes.

Coffeeishot · 04/07/2025 14:27

Truetoself · 04/07/2025 14:26

If you are the woman in question, please do not enter into a relationship with a man who has children

Yes this.

You have said this. What is your actual point because you are just saying stuff now.

The woman is not related to the kids and the father's does not own the property.

But he lives there, so it is their home. Wherever he lives is their home. Just like wherever the mother lives is their home. He is legally responsible for them.

No-one is making you invite a man to live with you but if you do, your home becomes his kids' home.

Kbroughton · 04/07/2025 14:26

This is a very strange thread. It may be easier OP if actually describe the issue that is worrying you.

Miyagi99 · 04/07/2025 14:25

cardycard · 04/07/2025 14:19

It is different if you are the homeowner and your name is on the deeds then you do own the home. If you rent or live with someone with your kids sometimes, it is not your home or it is a temporary home.

Edited

If you rent it is your home. I’ve rented for nearly 30 years, I’ve never been homeless. I’ve lived in my home, I just don’t own it. If I moved in with a partner, that would be my home and my children’s home although I don’t own it. If someone moved in with me we would share a home.

Nobody is saying the SC should be made to feel unwelcome. But calling it a home is likely to be more devastating if the relationship ends then they have lost their 'home'.

No, I think the kids are going to be pretty well messed up by this situation however pedantic you want to be with words. I don’t think it matters whether it’s called their home, Dad’s home, Dad’s temporary home, Dad’s Girlfriend’s home or Alcatraz, the kids are going to be far more messed up by the bizarre attitude of what I presume is their Dad’s girlfriend.

If the father lives there, it is their home.

If the woman who owns the house doesn't like that, then they shouldn't have asked a man with children to move in.

But that doesn’t mean she should be expected to pay for them does it ?

By definition, a parent's home is their child's home. Children can't buy property themselves.

The woman is not related to the kids and the father's does not own the property.

All home for children are temporary because most children move out when they grow up.

And if that relationship isn’t deemed permanent (as permanent as relationships ever are) then why on earth are kids involved and staying over in the first place?

Who on earth moves their boyfriend and his kids in thinking it’s just temporary?

Lots of people are cohabitating - it is no big surprise.

MrsSunshine2b · 04/07/2025 14:22

Because a parent and their children come as a package.

If you invite a parent to live in your home, then by extension, you have invited their children.

There is a very simple fix for anyone who does not want children to live in their home and that is to not date a parent.

Agix · 04/07/2025 14:22

So you’d begrudge your partner saying to his kids, come on, time to go home, meaning your house to his kids?
