Lily Allen ‘can’t remember’ how many abortions she’s had

Article in the Fail today about this.
I am pro choice but it did make me a bit uncomfortable. After a while a string of abortions - too many to remember - would surely leave its mark physically and emotionally not mention the cost on the NHS.
Everyone should have a choice but is there not an element of personal responsibility to just take precautions after the first few times?!

The point where she said;

“I remember once getting pregnant and the man paying for my abortion and me thinking it was so romantic,”

Tells you all you need to know. Stupid woman.

She did laugh about that and reflect on how dysfunctional that was. But quotes plucked from podcasts avoid all of that pesky nuance don't they.

it's amazing how many women on this thread are pro choice but not THAT pro choice. Who knew there was so many caveats.

There is this desperate need from so many for there to be some kind of self flaggelation for women taking up an option that is available to them. The horror at a woman not feeling emotionally repentant about it.

I had a termination, it was easy peasy and I felt very little emotion about it.

LynetteScavo · 03/07/2025 22:03

@CultureAlienationBoredomandDespair Good point , but why judge? Why judge someone who accidentally got pregnant while married to a higher earner and on contraception? Or is it only poor people who are too old or too young to patent,
who are too dim witted to figure out contraception, and couldn’t provide for a child in the way the average MNeter would isn’t to be judged? Where is the line drawn for judging on this? To me it’s a bit like saying “ I have fiends who are black, but…”
I’m mixed race and will admit I can be racist at times. At least I can see my racism and own it.

“I’m pro-life, but there is this woman who…blah, blah, blah”

Itchybritches · 03/07/2025 21:47

She’s a privileged and intelligent woman. I’m absolutely pro-choice, but would never see multiple abortions as a method of contraception, even just from a women’s health point of view. It’s not really okay, is it? Or to make light of it, in a ‘I’ve lost count of how many’ way. I mean, accidents happen, but let’s be real.
I think she’s got the attention through controversy she was looking for. She’s desperate to be seen as achingly cool.

Why should there be a limit? Her abortions do not affect anyone else whatsoever.

I mean a mental limit, a decision in your own mind that I can only make this mistake so many times. At some point I should be taking responsibility and trying harder to avoid this. Regardless of your opinion of abortion it’s not a good thing to put your body through so many times when it could be avoided. Her abortions don’t affect me no but most people will judge you for it for the above reason. Be an adult and take responsibility.

Why would she put herself in this position? Why not just sort out contraception. She is someone who started out with every advantage in life.

Not every advantage. Wasn’t she quite famously a victim of middle class neglect?

pelargoniums · 03/07/2025 21:28

I want to know more about this Slag Assessment when you present for your 69th abortion: is there a trigger on the system to alert them you’ve had more than your fair share? Amazed the NHS would have the resources and private won’t care unless it’s a money-spinner.

OrangeSlices998 · 03/07/2025 20:59

Rosscameasdoody · 03/07/2025 19:46

Or how about women avail themselves of the contraceptive options available in a first world country so that abortion doesn’t become the norm if you can’t be arsed to be responsible ? Back street abortion is not an option for someone like Lily Allen so it’s irrelevant.

You have no idea what circumstances led to her pregnancies and what contraception she did or didn’t use. And it’s none of your business!

OrangeSlices998 · 03/07/2025 20:57

Rosscameasdoody · 03/07/2025 20:37

Never said it was about moral fibre. But women presenting for multiple abortions would be ‘assessed’ because red flags would be raised for several reasons - and quite rightly.

Assessed for what by whom? The midwives working there would ask questions but if she has capacity & satisfies the abortion act she can have as many abortions as she likes

Rosscameasdoody · 03/07/2025 20:40

It’s called debate. Posters are entitled to their opinions. I’m pro choice, but what I’m not ‘pro’ is women having multiple abortions because they can’t be arsed taking proper precautions if they don’t want to be pregnant as a result of sex - or can’t be arsed making sure their partners are taking precautions. Why should the bloke be excuses here ?

I'm pretty sure you can debate without calling women whores and talking about them opening their legs and generally making derogatory, misogynistic comments.

There's lots of examples of other people doing so in this thread.

mrlistersgelfbride · 03/07/2025 20:50

Well I’ve never heard anyone talk about abortions this way.
To be honest, it makes me feel slightly better. I’ve had 2 and I think that’s too many.
But it’s no one else’s business really.

Read a better paper.

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/07/2025 20:49

Rosscameasdoody · 03/07/2025 20:30

Nope. Not misogyny to expect women to take responsibility for contraception if they don’t want to be pregnant. Have you seen what’s happening in the USA ? MN is making a case for it to happen here.

Most people don’t open their legs and rely on abortion if they get pregnant.

Women who have unwanted pregnancies rely on abortion. Do you think such feckless people🙄 should have a baby instead of an abortion?

pelargoniums · 03/07/2025 20:42

Some posters seem to think adding “I’m pro choice” to their vile rhetoric is a Get Out of Misogyny Free card.

KateMiskin · 03/07/2025 20:37

Things MN has allowed on this thread:

Lily Allen being called a whore
Other posters called whores
Women being told not to open their legs.
( I reported but have not got an acknowledgement so I assume all this is ok).

'Open your legs'?

Have I fallen through a rabbithole into Andrew Tate's blog?

Totally 😷

DontTouchRoach · 03/07/2025 20:37

If you think there should be a cap on the number of abortions women can have, you’re not really pro-choice.

I also very much doubt Lily Allen had her abortions on the NHS.

Rosscameasdoody · 03/07/2025 20:37

TwinsTrollsAndHunz · 03/07/2025 20:02

No, they wouldn't be "investigated". They would be assessed, just like any other patient or service user attended for abortion care. The assessment is not intended to cross examine the woman's moral fibre, it is to determine whether she has any safeguarding needs, as well as a medical assessment to satisfy the Abortion Act criteria.

Never said it was about moral fibre. But women presenting for multiple abortions would be ‘assessed’ because red flags would be raised for several reasons - and quite rightly.

Jennps · 03/07/2025 20:37

ClearFruit · 03/07/2025 09:45

Fucking appalling, but she doesn't have a history of particularly brilliant decision making does she? She was a cocaine user who hired female escorts for sex whilst on tour, when her Husband and children were at home.

Hang on, she was on tour?

Where was she touring?

And who turns up and pays good money to listen to her ‘singing’. Thats more shocking than the abortions.

Sorry if any real singers reading this are offended by this woman being accused of being a singer.

But not liking the choice doesn’t mean that they don’t think she should have that choice. I think most people think that she should have been able to make that decision but still judge her for putting herself in the position where that a decision she’s had to make.

This.

Pro choicer here. A big one.

Lily Allen is a has-been and is trying her hardest to stay relevant. There’s been a theme lately, with Kate Nash screaming about everyone from Rod Stewart to JK Rowling, while singing songs from her heyday in the late noughties. Her “natter” with fellow forgotten celeb Miquita Oliver was a perfect opportunity to say “hi, I’m here!” She really doesn’t care how she courts the press, but does.

What saddens me about this is the fact that she was rich and famous and had access to healthcare (as rightly she should), and yet the pregnancies kept coming. For a woman who is pro-choice she has played a blinder for the anti-choice brigade, by reminding everyone that us silly women cannot be trusted with our own bodies and decisions.

Yes, women will have multiple abortions for multiple reasons, good reasons. You only need to remember the abandoned babies in London that are believed to be from the same mother. We don’t know what horrendous trauma this woman has went through/is going through. For some woman, multiple abortions and associated trauma are their reality and they are light years away from Ms Allen’s lived experience. They deserve nothing but love and kindness, however her recent revelation just makes things worse for those who don’t have her privilege. She is pathetic.

This. Sums it up perfectly.

Nope. If you find the language unacceptable scroll past. Women are responsible for their own bodies and have choice. I’m pro choice. But I recognise when choice becomes a feckless reliance on abortion as a form of contraception.
