Lily Allen ‘can’t remember’ how many abortions she’s had

Article in the Fail today about this.
I am pro choice but it did make me a bit uncomfortable. After a while a string of abortions - too many to remember - would surely leave its mark physically and emotionally not mention the cost on the NHS.
Everyone should have a choice but is there not an element of personal responsibility to just take precautions after the first few times?!

“My body my choice” is right up there with “but it’s my right” as a simplistic catch all to shut people up. To infringe is to bully after all.

But, the whole rights thing of the social contract is actually
“Rights and responsibilities“

Reponsoble to society, responsible to the use of resources, responsible in our treatment of others

Im pro-choice, things happen, things go wrong, maybe you just don’t want a baby as Lily, I believe, said. And we should be free to make our choices.

But to not consider contraception at all, to just crack on, and abort when you inevitably get pregnant - that’s downright irresponsible.

I’d argue however she needed help, not the ability to abort removed, maybe some kind of sex education or counselling should kick in if you hit abortion number three - not to judge you but to address whatever issue you clearly have and help you.

As already stated, bitchfest.
What shallow and judgemental lives you must all lead.

So your counter argument is ... having no argument.

Gotcha. You do you culture has really served us well.

I'm pro-choice but I found the flippancy and giggling around the interview very unsettling. They each claimed to have had 4 or 5 abortions and found it trivial and funny. What message is that sending men about our bodies, or their own responsibilities, for god sake? Nobody has snooped into Lily Allen's private files, she chose to talk about it publicly. Personally I won't have the "thought police" dictating what I and can't talk about.

absolutely this

there are a lot of self appointed thought police on mn these days

People discuss things on here. It’s a forum. I can ask for it to be moved if you think it’s the wrong place.

You’re right, I’ve seen worse being discussed here. @Itchytoe is being a prick

I can tell her MH is fragile if she’s had 5 abortions. Exactly my point upthread about a woman would have to be in a really dark place to keep finding herself in this shit position. I wonder when abortion number 6 will happen.

It is well documented that she has mh conditions, she openly discussed her diagnosis.

Usernamenotavailable19 · 03/07/2025 11:39

She could have gone her whole life without anyone knowing about this, seems vulgar to throw it out there so casually years later.
to have ‘four or five abortions’ is odd unless she’s a ridiculously fertile woman that not even contraception and condoms stopped her from getting pregnant.
And for her friend to label it ‘romantic’ that a man paid for Lily’s abortions is so messed up.

funinthesun19 · 03/07/2025 11:37

EmeraldShamrock000 · 03/07/2025 11:36

She seemed very confident discussing this, I think she'll be knocked off her feet by the public reaction, her MH is fragile.

I always tell my children, only share things that you are happy for everyone else to hear, good and bad.

You think she had them on the NHS? I expect she said she couldn’t remember because it’s nobody else’s business.

So, pro coice then... unless it interferes with your own perceived value system? So, not really pro choice or pro women's autonomy etc etc at all then?

Should you get a stamp card? What if your friend hasn't used any of her stamps? Can you use hers? What if in your maximum of 3 abortions rule... abortion 1 was due to stupidity, abortion 2 was failed contraception (you vomited after taking your pill or the condom came off etc), abortion 3 was due to you being on meds that make pregnancy very dangerous (there are plenty!), abortion 4 was because of rape, abortion 5 was because no contraception is 100%, abortion 6 is because you were not in a place that you could look after yourself, let alone a baby, abortion 7 was because the baby had medical conditions, abortion 8 was because... there are soooo many different reasons to have an abortion. You cant pick a random number and say "yep, I approve of that number but no more".

I have no idea about Lily. I haven't read the articles. Just the headlines.

I think we are so lucky to have access to safe abortions and the freedom to access them.

As I have already said, I just hope she isnt trying to process any trauma publicly. Yes, I know some women dont give it a second thought but a lot of women do struggle with it. Even if it is the "right" decision and you dont regret it, it can still be deeply upsetting.

Being pro-choice doesn't mean you can't have a moral framework. Your list is frankly ridiculous. Most women get through life without having any abortions.

I agree OP.
Extremely irresponsible, selfish and unnecessary with many contraceptive methods available.
While I am very grateful that women have access to abortion service, it should be used as a form of contraception.
I never liked LA, she's an attention seeking fool.

Does she take sugar in her tea? Is she really as petite as she looks in her photos? What colour is her sofa?

You have no idea? Oh. You said you have never liked her so I assumed you actually knew her personally to form that opinion. Never mind then.

Abortion, by definition, is not a form of contraception.

I don't care. Her body, her business.🤷‍♀️

It is a bitchfest though, that's why I've repeatedly pointed it out.
I'd be happy if a young woman was accessing contraception, but also able to access abortion should she require it. I wouldn't judge her or tell her that some random folk on the internet matter more than her.

Well I haven’t made it into a bitchfest and it wasn’t my intention. I saw the article this morning across a few media platforms and thought it was worthy of a discussion. There’s no obligation to join in.

It’s also a shame that grown women can’t have an objective discussion about important things without being accused of judging, starting a ‘bitchfest’ or being told to mind their own business.

Reframe it without the LA aspect if you want. Would you be happy if your daughter got pregnant so many times and ended up losing count of how many abortions they’ve had?

Bumpitybumper · 03/07/2025 11:22

Needsleepneedcoffee · 03/07/2025 11:12

I feel that we should not be openly judging women asserting their rights to what needs to be viewed as healthcare.
These discussions open the doors to situations like in the US where women are being forced to remain pregnant when it is a danger to their health and will never produce a baby (molar pregnancy etc) or are being kept on life support to sustain a foetus for months.

I think as women, we need to choose to support women's reproductive choices or not, and accept that not is likely to set us back 40+ years in our productive rights.

And I can't bloody stand Lily Allen.

Hmmm it's totally possible to judge a woman for being reckless and irresponsible and to support her right to access an abortion. Asking people to suspend judgement is pretty much asking the impossible, however I think it's important to recognise that people (men and women) make terrible choices all the time but it's almost always not in society's or the child's interest for a baby to born in these circumstances. Abortion is probably still the best outcome for everyone involved even though it's not ideal.

funinthesun19 · 03/07/2025 11:22

vovov · 03/07/2025 11:13

It’s pretty obvious why people have opinions.

Lily Allen publicised it. I would hate for my 17yo dd to hear this and think that 5 abortions is a run of the mill thing that everyone does.

Her body, her choice - fine. And that would indeed have been the end of it is she had not chosen to publicise it ! But she did ! So it isn’t the end of it now.

I thought exactly the same thing about my DD. I wouldn’t like her to read something like this and for it to feel normalised to her.

It‘s not empowering to hear a woman has well and truly utilised her rights and had 5 abortions. She didn’t need to tell us all.

Talk to me about these “serious repercussions” Let’s have some facts and stats.

That is just ignoring the fact that Allen should have taken responsibility for her decisions.

How is it, when she did take responsibility (by having abortions when she didn't want to have the baby)?

What you are advocating is behaviour that she might not have been capable of at the time, actually, and which aligns with your image of how a woman ought to present. Newsflash: there is no one way to be a woman. Casual, unprotected sex happens. Need I also mention that the man involved also did not conform to your template? Or do you perhaps not have a template for male behaviour?
