To ask what jobs people secretly (or not so secretly) look down on and why?

We’re always told “all work is valuable” and I do agree in principle, but if we’re honest, most of us have a job or two we side-eye, even if we don’t say it out loud. Is it how people behave in the role? The pay vs attitude? The ethics of the job itself?

AIBU to think it’s okay to admit we have judgements - as long as we’re willing to examine them?

@PennywisePoundFoolish completely agree with your SEND related points. I mean, it must be grim to work for a council and be under threat of being sacked for agreeing to £££ provision but there is finesse and ways of being compliant with the law without selling people out. There is a whole industry of SEND chuggers out there.

Well you do see it on here sometimes, people who seem a bit perplexed and annoyed about what tradespeople charge and earn. A recent thread on this someone was moaning ‘well I shouldn’t have bothered working hard and going to uni’ in response to what they charge. I’ve also seen the odd thread where posters are bit dismayed that their friends child who has become a mechanic or plumber or whatever is out-earning their DC who has graduated. So maybe there is an element of snobbery there about degrees and jobs at desks. I don’t think it’s overly common anymore though?

I don’t think that’s snobbery I think it’s anger. People are told that if they/ their children work hard and get a degree they will earn very well as that used to be the case. Now you can get a degree and still end up on minimum wage.

Even 10 years ago people were told trades were for the non academic and uni would mean middle class money. But it hasn’t worked out that way.

My relative used to work picking a certain kind of vegetable, when I told people this, most would laugh 😳 and say, “OMG that’s such a random job.” Like excuse me ?

Not look down on as such but I'm mystified why bankers and the like earn so much money when their impact is minimal when other professions which are much worse paid, such as childcare, teachers, cleaners, have a tangible benefit but are paid less.

Edited

All jobs in the care sector are massively under valued and under paid. Others like bankers are massively overpaid. Sad but true. What people are paid does not reflect their value.

Any WFH jobs

Do you use any public or private service providers regularly? I mean, if you live on a self-sustaining smallholding, fair play. But if not, eeh, you’re going to have to do some mental gymnastics there.

My husband is a tradesman and I'm a shelf stacker in a supermarket, and I think generally a lot of people would look down on us. Though maybe I should also be mad at my husband, because I ought to be rolling around in wads of cash 🤔. DH finds customers tend to make assumptions about his political leanings, or rather they're comfortable expressing theirs and assume he'll join in. Awkward.

My DC all have SEND. I look down on the LA SEN team staff from the top to the caseworker. I get the decisions are made my the elusive panels, but the SEND legislation is very easily accessible and so many of the decisions are made in full knowledge it's unlawful, and you're part of the problem even if you're only the messenger.

I also have a lot of concerns about SEN Advocates. There are some good ones, but so many have sprung up now. Too many give poor advice and aren't exactly cheap. Most start from a place of good intentions, but it seems it gets to a point where they take on too much and ghost families, or expand into snake oil services.

Being a YouTube ‘influencer’
Being a z-list celebrity. Basically jobs that aren’t actually jobs and nothing positive to society.

I think YouTubers can actually add a lot of knowledge and joy to the world by creating amazing videos.

Zezet · 02/07/2025 22:21

I think there's rather a lot of judgement about people whose jobs seems fun or intrinsically very satisfying and who rely on state subsidies or funding to do them - part of the reason why funding for artists can be so controversial. Like the feeling they aren't doing their fair share of drudgery.

Bankers are a bit interesting - I see them as contributing somewhat by helping organisations earn money that other finance products invest in and thereby give some benefit to every day people.

The thing that really irks me is the pay packets for "entertainment" ie actors, musicians, sports people, compared to roles that benefit society ie health care, education, scientists. It says that, as a society, being entertained is more valuable than wellbeing and learning. That's pretty shameful in my opinion. Imagine the good that could be done investing the entertainment billions into health related research and affordable and timely healthcare for everyone.

"influencers", YouTubers, anyone involved in the trafficking of sex workers, Tory politicians.

I find it really sad and frankly immature and pathetic that people will dismiss as "immoral" all politicians whose party politics don't align with their own. Should we all have to vote the same way? Is this Russia?

I sometimes wonder about influencers who have given up their 'real' jobs to shill stuff/ make content. Most won't remain relevant for very long, do they just hope the gravy train will keep going? Or will they go back to a normal job? I suppose they have to make hay while the sun shines.

My friend’s DD gave up a regular job and became an influencer and has done amazingly well. She recently bought a 300k flat with cash and she’s only 24. I can’t see her going back to a regular job now.

I think people tend to confuse someone not liking or wanting to do a job with looking down on people doing the job. I remember a thread around Covid time with someone who’d had a well-paid office job having to take a supermarket job that got very heated.

There are loads of jobs I wouldn’t want to do, but I don’t think less of the people doing them.

^^ Very much.

There are lots of jobs i don't really want to do. But with most of them I am more likely to admire people who do them than look down on them (teachers for example).

Gattopardo · 02/07/2025 22:11

The argument that bankers are performing a civic good because they lend money for social housing does make me chuckle. I find it hard to see venture capitalists as morally upstanding, although maybe there are exceptions. Generally, contracts are drawn up to protect returns, and if profits are looking at alldubious it’s cut and run. There is a crisis looming as public sector PFI contracts come to an end.

RobertaFirmino · 02/07/2025 22:10

'Journalists' working for the s*n, gb news and the mail (none of these outlets deserve capital letters).

I wouldn't look down on anyone else for earning their own money though. Not even Only Fans. If people are stupid enough to pay for that sort of thing then I don't blame others for cashing in (as long as they know what they are doing and are taking good care of their mental health).

I think I have disdain for people who leach off creative industries, nothing specific but
middlemen types with all mouth, plenty of unwanted opinion and no talent

RawBloomers · 02/07/2025 22:05

A lot of advertising and sales. Not all of it, probably not the majority, but a lot of it is scummy. Influencers. Those involved in pushing plastic surgery, botox, lip fillers, etc. Those involved in the porn industry, strip clubs, OnlyFans typestuff. Commercial surrogacy. Many politicians.
