To ask what jobs people secretly (or not so secretly) look down on and why?

We’re always told “all work is valuable” and I do agree in principle, but if we’re honest, most of us have a job or two we side-eye, even if we don’t say it out loud. Is it how people behave in the role? The pay vs attitude? The ethics of the job itself?

AIBU to think it’s okay to admit we have judgements - as long as we’re willing to examine them?

Look. You don't like me. Ok. That's fine. But don't start the petty "gang up". It's just silly.

I cannot see how a private company would create a job just to keep somebody employed if there wasn't an actual use even if it was reputational, regulatory or paperwork created by the government. This company would go bust quite soon.

I cannot speak for the public / civil service.

How many people have been hired to manage DEI stuff for private companies?

RightOnTheEdge · 02/07/2025 23:46

I work in a Wetherspoons and a lot of posters on MN look down on my job.

I've seen some vile posts on here about Spoons staff before, some that made me feel like shit.

No. But I think we have to be careful about using race as a negative descriptor. There's no need for "white" to enter the equation. As I say, most of the richest men aren't actually white. If race (whether it be : black, Asian, white) is used as a slur, none are acceptable. It should be a level playing field. But I'll park it there.

I say this as a lawyer (not in criminal sector) but criminal defence lawyers. How can one defend a murderer/paedofile etc

Did you skip the entirety of your law degree?

It is quite worrying that your understanding of your legal training is so poor that you don't understand how this works or what the principles are.

Yup, law school 101

Traffic wardens, it’s not an honest living, it’s just enabling another incredibly high tax often over a few minutes parking, if no one took the job the world would be a better place. And the poor employees get so much disgusting abuse for it

They are needed because some people park like cunts.
Where I live, a young female traffic warden had plaster poured on her head because a builder was parking like a knob, and she was doing her job. He went to court for the charge of assault by beating.

Exactly.

So the jobs I looked down on when I did OLD and men told me what they did were life coaches. Some life coaches are genuine and good but many are just grifters and I got the impression the men I spoke to fell into the latter. And indeed struck me as potential cocklodgers so that’s made me wary of life coaches 😂 same with anything that’s too MLM.

I have respect for the work tradies do but probably wouldn’t want to settle down with one as the ones I know seem to do very little at home due to wear and tear on their body. Understandable but not necessarily fair on their partners. It depends though!

I’m absolutely not impressed with Only fans / escorting etc either

Bankers get paid so much because they directly make money. Public workers get paid less because they don’t directly make money, only the potential for other people to make money in future. Most people, with very little training, can be cleaners - most of us do it at home. Very few people could make millions in a day, even with years of training and experience. People who make lots of money get paid lots of money, generally.

I agree with this.

Part of the reason, apart from the fact that you probably have to be quite bright and skillful, have high resilience and exceptional work ethic to be a successful banker, is that bankers are being paid danger money. They could be let go in an instant and it is pretty stressful.

No I am not bringing out the violins for them.

Tell me a divorce lawyer has never played off a divorcing couple against each other to create more (paid for ) contesting paperwork...? Never wind up an aggrieved spouse ? Play on the heart strings of a father that wants more access to his kids ? A mother that's been cheated on? Tell me that isn't so ?

If you have experienced that report it. We're a highly regulated profession with strict rules around conduct and ethics.

Solicitors are not allowed to run cases for their own benefit. They have a duty to advise their client in their best interests and to act upon the instructions of the client.

These sort of allegations are generally misunderstanding the context.

Also divorce lawyers are a tiny part of the profession.

‘Fluffy’ jobs that wouldn’t exist is a saner world.

RefreshingMist · 02/07/2025 23:38

@okydokethen I totally disagree re traffic wardens. People park in all kinds of dangerous and obnoxious places.
And parking is a scarce resource in cities so charging is the best way to manage it.

Accusations of "thread derailment" (aka a different opinion) and then telling me to get off the thread is very much a 'personal attack ' (against Mumsnet talk guidelines)

I would not want my children to do any form of sex work or work in a church/religious setting.

I worry about the quality of care provided by ‘some’ care and nursery workers - mostly because of my job working with parents where there are child protection concerns for their children but are able to get a job working with vulnerable people, I see it a lot (and report it)

Well thats very off. Perhaps you can take a look through my posting on this thread and work out for yourself where I have "de-railed". Blimey. Odd. Very odd.

Not look down on as such but I'm mystified why bankers and the like earn so much money when their impact is minimal when other professions which are much worse paid, such as childcare, teachers, cleaners, have a tangible benefit but are paid less.

Edited

You seem very personally aggrieved by my opinion offered on a thread asking for opinions?

"Hate"? There is no "hate" .

Solicitors exploit people and maximise profit. £40 to type a letter out is reasonable and justifiable is it ? Come on... You know it, I know it. It's profiteering. A charge for even opening an email ? Come on.... That's not profiteering? I'm not actually really judging. It's a slick business idea. Just wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of it.

I'm quite sure that solicitors work hard. I'm quite sure the job is extremely stressful and impacts their whole life. I know it requires skill and dedication. I won't refute that for even a fraction of a second. But come on, let's not play silly buggers here, nobody is doing anything through compassion and what's best for other humans ? It's a money making business and profiteering happens on the back of long winded drawn out proceedings. It's just reality.

Sigh, you have just shown even more of your ignorance and blinkered thinking. Anyone who resorts to saying 'come on... you know it' isn't quite in possession of the strength of their argument as they think.

I shall leave you to your sweeping statements and unsubstantiated views.

Can I ask why?

If I didn't have the ability to WFH then I wouldn't be able to work and contribute to society at all.

I'd end up stuck at home claiming disability benefits and labelled a scrounger instead.

Same for my DP. He is autistic and WFH is perfect for him.
