AIBU we leave on holiday tomorrow morning and …

We leave on holiday tomorrow morning, and I’m the only one packed. DH and two older teens have done nothing. They barely seem to have registered that we are going tomorrow.

AIBU to just leave them to it, and if that means they have nothing but what they are standing up in then maybe they will learn for next time?

(so as not to drip feed, it’s a U.K. self catering holiday but we have to leave at 8am tomorrow, and the location is remote. There will be a small supermarket but no clothes shops.)

They’ve already had several reminders. I’m not giving any more. I also feel I have a duty not to baby two boys (17 and 28) otherwise they won’t learn and future DIL/SIL will be dealing with it.

I already sorted the self catering stuff, but am leaving them to figure out e.g. phone chargers, toiletries etc.

Older DS has just put a load of washing in, that he needs for packing (so at least some forethought 😄. But he put it on a 4 hour wash cycle 🙄

Despite it being a U.K. holiday, we do have to check in for a ferry, so definitely a 9am start.

Do you usually pack for everyone? As in, are they expecting you to do it?

If not, just leave them to it. My husband is like this, he is a last minute person but in fairness he manages to get all packed in record time solo so it doesn’t make any difference to me.

Parky04 · 01/07/2025 20:43

It takes my DH 5 minutes to pack a bag! He would start packing at 7.45 and finish way before 8.00!

AbzMoz · 01/07/2025 20:39

In my house we do a ‘right, everyone needs to just focus on getting this done now’ and then everyone has to spend 30 mins sorting whatever needs sorting. Other uses include the ‘blitz tidy.’

The expectation is it’s good enough after 30 mins and everyone can stop what they’re doing for that amount of time (or are incentivized to do it quicker). If stuff gets forgotten then tough.

We also make it clear who’s on the shared stuff duty - I have packed the suncream, towels and cards. I have not touched your specific toothpaste or vitamins.

Just get it sorted now or tomorrow will start with drama.

This. And it will mean you won’t leavd at 8am - but much, much later

NuffSaidSam · 01/07/2025 20:35

They've still got ages! If no-one is packed when you go to bed give them a friendly reminder that you're leaving at 8am tomorrow.

helpfulperson · 01/07/2025 20:30

How does it take you so long to pack? If i was leaving at 8 tomorrow I'd start packing at 7.30. Especially for a UK holiday.

HeddaGarbled · 01/07/2025 20:24

Teenagers are genetically programmed to pack at midnight.

Agreed. The only person getting stressed now is you. The holiday will be spoiled for everyone if they don't have their stuff. You will never get away at 8am.
I wouldn't do it for them but I would yell at everyone to get packed tonight.

annzen · 01/07/2025 20:15

If they're not ready at 8, get in the car, tell them you are off, and drive to the nearest coffee shop. See what happens.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/07/2025 20:09

I can tell you now that you will not be leaving at 8am tomorrow morning. And you will be stressed to the eyeballs when you do eventually leave. I feel itchy just thinking about it.

K0OLA1D · 01/07/2025 20:08

I normally pack just before I go to bed or the morning before.

As long as you're packed I'd leave them to it

BMW6 · 01/07/2025 20:07

If you're the driver just leave at the appointed time whether they're packed and in the car or not.

Just go and they can make their own way or stay home.

I wish someone would do this. I've done it to late DH (no kids) because he was being an absolute ARSE the night before so I went by train without him. Had a lovely time.

LightCameraBitchSmile · 01/07/2025 20:07

How are you going to enforce the 8am leave time though? Surely they’ll just make you late

gmgnts · 01/07/2025 20:05

Brace yourself for the fact that they will not be ready at 8am tomorrow. Will you drive off without them? Or have a god almighty row while you wait for them to pack and then leave at 9.30? This would piss me off no end. I think I'd be going on my own.

bellamorgan · 01/07/2025 20:04

Boy Teen and dh are like this. I do one reminder around 8pm the night before and well if they forget stuff then though shit.

G5000 · 01/07/2025 20:02

DH and older teens, just leave them to it. They are not toddlers.

I agree with this. You don't necessarily have to do it for them but do sternly remind everyone what time your need to leave tomorrow and ensure everyone gets up and stays sorting themselves out right now.

As tempting as it is to just leave them the reality won't be as fun. You'll start the day with everyone stressed and upset and if they go away with less too few clothes/lack of toiletries/the wrong charger cables etc it will only kill the holiday fun because you'll still have an upset and stressed family and waste time trying to solve the problems.

It's just not a hill I would want to die on.

GardenGaff · 01/07/2025 19:59

I suspect you’re driving and they know that you don’t have to leave at 8am. Obviously if you were flying it’d be different, because a plane ain’t waiting for you if you’re late!

Prepare to be still sitting around at 8.20am tomorrow waiting for them to get sorted.

Hatty65 · 01/07/2025 19:59

This is my family and they do my head in! I'm always packed the day before. DH and DS say casually, 'Oh yeah, I'll do it when I get up. It'll only take 5 minutes' and then they always fanny about the next day, whilst I'm getting wound up and we end up leaving about an hour later than I wanted to (on UK breaks) and they get annoyed and say, 'What's it matter what time we left?'

It matters. And if they'd packed the night before we could have got up, had a leisurely breakfast and left on time with no stress or arguments.

Trickabrick · 01/07/2025 19:56

I wouldn’t even give them a warning, they presumably know they’re going on holiday tomorrow? If you’re packed, crack on with a relaxing evening and leave them to sort themselves out.

SwedishEdith · 01/07/2025 19:56

I will guarantee that during the holiday, someone (not you) will ask " Have we brought any painkillers/plasters/shampoo/cards".

Goingawayistricky · 01/07/2025 19:55

Depends on if you go away a lot. Both me and partner are used to travel and can pack quickly ( toilet bag ready to go at all times).

Luckily It’s uk so everyone knows what the fashion and weather is likely to be. Maybe different if you ae doing stuff.you normally wouldn’t and need to remember kit.

I’dve more pissed off with no one helping with the self catering aspect. Are they putting in buts or expecting you to remember all their essential food requirements?

Blanca87 · 01/07/2025 19:52

Fuck them. You are not the household project manager . If they are able bodied and old enough ( which it sounds like they are) then they have to deal with consequences.
Harsh but fair and I bet they won’t make that mistake again.
