To be done with Labour - no money will be saved

I've just seen on ITV news that even if the bill goes through no money whatsoever will be saved. So it all seems a pretty pointless exercise. What on earth was the point of all this fuss and argument. Might have guessed this government would be a disaster. That huge majority and they can't get anything done.

I hate to think what the UK will be like after 4 more years of this.

So which of their policies do you think are going to “sort it out”?

What are you talking about, where did I say anything about Reform sorting it out?

And anyway, you’re the one with an issue with reform, start first by explaining what your issues are.

Absolute w@nkers

Even the tories voted against

The Tories withheld their support for the bill because they demanded assurances in return (such as a promise not to raise taxes in the next Parliament) that the government wasn't willing to give. It wasn't a free vote; those Labour MPs who voted against the bill defied the whip. Everyone was supposed to vote along party lines. It's definitely not the case that the Tories have, en masse, developed a moral conscience! Badenoch is one of the few who thinks that the cuts should go much further (and seems oddly convinced that the majority share that view - perhaps she spends too much time on the Mumsnet politics board?).

Careful @Jennps…

Wait until October. If you are a taxpayer. Especially a higher rate one. Bend over now and be prepared for even higher taxes.

The rich are leaving in droves anyway, because they can. They don’t need to put up with this. This socialism is steroids will only hurt those middle earners.

https://bylinetimes.com/2025/01/24/no-there-has-not-been-an-exodus-of-uk-millionaires-and-new-wealth-taxes-wont-force-them-to-leave-either/

No they are not.

CurrentHun · 01/07/2025 20:59

The government should be focusing on economic growth and then we can more easily afford better public services spending. Disabled people are much more likely to be living in poverty as things are. The current system is by no means generous. We should not be punching down on current or future disabled people by removing financial support they need to live. PIP has a 0% fraud rate by the government’s own statistics.

There has been a backbench rebellion over this issue because the UK government is saying that in their preferred financial priorities, collectively we can no longer afford to give dignity and quality of life to people who happen to be disabled. Let that sink in.

Any of us are just one serious accident away from becoming disabled ourselves. The majority of the disability in the population is acquired over people’s lives, they were not born disabled. So I for one, am very grateful tonight that there could still be a safety net for those future disabled people who need it. Thank you to everyone who has campaigned on this and thank you to all of the MPs that listened.

Yeah, what about it?

So which of their policies do you think are going to “sort it out”?

AlertEagle · 01/07/2025 20:57

I personally think there are too many young people who are capable of work but claim they have mental health issues and they dont work. I think those people need to be supported into going back to work.

Jennps · 01/07/2025 20:56

BIossomtoes · 01/07/2025 20:44

Yeah, what about it?

Cannongoose · 01/07/2025 20:56

Some of the remarks upthread come very close to suggesting that people with disabilities or care needs should receive no support.
there is a lot of misinformation about matters like cars - meaning cars obtained via the charity Motability.
anyone qualifying for a Motability car must higher rate DLA for mobility or PIP.
I Think a lot of people think - PIP or DLA is taxpayers money and so the “workers” are paying for a free car…
But they aren’t any more than if those specific parts of those specific benefits went on train fares or taxi fares.
at the end of a lease period the new Motability car goes back to Motability who then sell it as a used car.
the person using that leased car never owns it unless they can buy it at the end of a lease period.
The value of the car is irrelevant because by the time the leaseholder has paid a down payment (in my daughter’s case almost £3,000) and Motability obtain the mobility component of DLA every month the charity has £28,800 per car, excluding the deposit and then sells it on.
Sadly, as in my daughter’s case, some people will never work. She will also never eat, never walk, never talk, never graduate or go on holiday by herself, never have a partner or family and may possibly die young.
Begrudging that expense because- currently- the very wealthy are leaving the UK (probably temporarily and of course to benefit themselves) or thinking that there should be NO WELFARE state at all, leaves me thinking that people shouting about the issues they raise here (concern for the economy and “workers”) have perhaps an optimism that their need for wheelchairs or carers or Motability cars or disabled rights and funding could just never happen to them. As if a catastrophic accident or illness couldn’t place them and their families where people like me find themselves- unable to work full time, spending more than I earn and with carers allowance and DLA too to try to survive. Never to have shame or sadness because of lack of earning power because of events beyond your control.
lots of people voted Tory for too long. Labour can’t work miracles.
But voting for Reform would be a slow death sentence for so many people who didn’t ask to be where or how they are.

Lonelycrab · 01/07/2025 20:55

Yay Reform!
it’ll be so dreamy😊

Sadly voters checked Labour's policies, voted for them and look where we are.

Correct.

Sunak called it, time and time again.

Farage is ahead in the polls. He needs to follow Trump as slash our state spending otherwise we are all doomed.

Are you and your family very wealthy and healthy? great if yes, Farage is your man.

Otherwise I'd strongly encourage you to read his "policies". You might be surprised.

Rayner as PM. Imagine that. The bar is low, we’ll have to dive into Earth’s core to find it.

At least Starmer’s a buffer from her.

Lioncub2020 · 01/07/2025 20:49

I not really sure we know what his policies are. Undo the two child cap to get elected then ban poor people from having kids so that it doesn't matter. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a Farage policy.

Well this time last year he was promising to exempt all front line healthcare staff earning less than £50k from income tax.

MyNameIsX · 01/07/2025 20:50

Labour got in simply because they weren’t the Tories.

ANYONE will get in premised on them not being Labour.

Teanbiscuits33 · 01/07/2025 20:50

You’ve been very vocal on other threads peddling your opinion that there should be no PIP at all so you don’t really get the moral high ground here, unless you’re saying that’s how you want money to be saved - PIP to be scrapped full stop?

Lioncub2020 · 01/07/2025 20:49

User37482 · 01/07/2025 20:47

He wants to undo the two child cap. Not optimistic about anyone tbh.

@marbledliving

We need to find a way to incentivize smart, competent people with the relevant skills and experience to go into government. But instead we react in horror to raising MP pay and MPs are reviled, regarded with cynicism and subject to some awful abuse, including the murder of two of them. It’s no wonder the people who have the competence to govern well decide upon other more rewarding careers Unless we change this we will continue to be run by the sons of the rich who regard politics as a hobby ( David Cameron and co), fanatical ideologies of the left and the right and well meaning incompetents.

This 100%

The problem is that those smart competent people with the relevant skills are normally successful high achievers and masses of electorate can't stand it.
These are people who voted in 18yo Reform councillor 🙄

Yes because DOGE is going so well in the US - Trump’s threatening to deport Musk now.

Luck not required. Labour are doing a nice job for paving the way for Reform. Farage must be delighted.
