Is this neglect?

I was with my friend today and has a nearly 3 year old in nursery. The nursery rang and said they don’t have any sun cream in for her, can they use nursery sun cream? She told them no, she doesn’t need it. Please don’t apply any. She then told me afterwards she doesn’t like to use sun cream. I came with her to pick up her DD after we had done shopping and all her arms and under her eyes/cheeks were burnt and already peeling and looked swollen under her eyes.

WTAF?!

It's over 30 degrees today, the toddle should not have been out in the sun at all, with or without suncream, unless they had a hat on and were covered up.
Yes, it's neglect, but I think it's the nursery who are responsible. They need to ensure that the the child is not getting burnt on their watch.

I’ve seen a lot of posts on Tictok recently where people, mostly women , are expressing the view that suncream is unnecessary, even dangerous. Batshit crazy. The nursery is also at fault for allowing the child to be burnt.

Nursery should 100% said she has to stay inside, instead of letting a child burn in such strong sun due to mums stupidity

Sometimes there is no reasoning with people but if she’s refusing the SC route then she needs to supply hats and long sleeves etc.
Nursery also need to take some responsibility for what happens on their watch.

You friend is very unreasonable but Tbh the nursery are at equally at fault here, they shouldn’t of let a child who they know was not wearing sun cream outside in a heat wave.

Marii97 · 30/06/2025 19:28

I agree they should have kept her inside/in the shade. She had no hat or anything

Yes. It’s neglect. Did you ask her why she was against SC? Also the nursery shouldn’t have allowed her outside to the extent she was being sunburnt

I think she saw somewhere about toxic things in sun cream and them absorbing into skin. I said you can get organic but she said she’d prefer nothing. I was concerned with how burnt she was

Both her mum and nursery are equally to blame, poor soul.
