Is this neglect?

I was with my friend today and has a nearly 3 year old in nursery. The nursery rang and said they don’t have any sun cream in for her, can they use nursery sun cream? She told them no, she doesn’t need it. Please don’t apply any. She then told me afterwards she doesn’t like to use sun cream. I came with her to pick up her DD after we had done shopping and all her arms and under her eyes/cheeks were burnt and already peeling and looked swollen under her eyes.

Totally crazy from both mum and nursery.

A good nursery would have never have allowed her out in the direct sun without protection such as a wide brimmed hat and keeping her in the. shade and her mother is ridiculous not using cream because of conspiracy theories.

so so so cruel - poor child - totally let down by all the adults in her life here as apparently not one of them has a brain cell . Utterly disgusting behaviour from all the adults involved and totally is neglect from them all.

She's not, it's been proven that some suncreams cause cancer. It's the nursery who were in the wrong to let the child go out unprotected in the middle of a fucking heat wave. The nursey are negligent here.

Where has it been proven?

I’ve seen a lot of posts on Tictok recently where people, mostly women , are expressing the view that suncream is unnecessary, even dangerous. Batshit crazy. The nursery is also at fault for allowing the child to be burnt.

It’s because skin cancer is on the rise, but what they don’t bother to research is why. Most people being diagnosed are over 70 and it’s because they didn’t wear sun cream or cover up as children. But people believe it’s sun cream and sunglasses. It only takes five minutes to do the research but they’d rather believe Facebook.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 30/06/2025 19:53

Very neglectful on the nursery’s part yes, your friend is a total moron but the nursery shouldn’t have allowed the child to be in the son with no sun cream and certainly not long enough to burn. That kid has no hope

The Sheep mentality is getting out of hand, “some randoms said it was true on social media, so it must be true” 🙄. I’d rather listen to my dermatologist who says it should be worn every day.
Poor child. 100% neglect. Would rather her child destroy her skin so she can follow the “trend”.
It would be interesting to know whether all of these people jumping on the no sunscreen bandwagon also don’t wash their face, moisturise or wear make up, because all of it contains chemicals.

also everything in the known universe, including us, is made from chemicals!

How in the world does a child burn whilst at nursery? Surely during hottest part they’d be inside? Mine are primary and weren’t allowed out. Plus, my mum didn’t use suncream on me , we lived in a very hot part of the world for a short time as a toddler in the 70’s I never burnt and went to nursery.

there are plenty of organic creams too

I never burn and never tan. Never have and am in my 70's. I still use a sun cream though because I don't want skin cancer. I am a bit shocked that the nursery let the child burn though.

Your friend is stupid. Poor child.

Promo981 · 30/06/2025 19:48

Your friend is a fucking idiot. There are mineral sunscreens out that that don't get absorbed. Also, if she is going to be picky about that I hope that all of the cleaning stuff she has in her home, for bodies and household cleaning are all natural.

PonyPatter44 · 30/06/2025 19:48

She IS a fucking idiot and a neglectful parent. The nursery is also at fault. Poor little kid, with no normal adults around to look out for her.

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 30/06/2025 19:47

Both are to blame, nursery should have kept her inside/in the shade, and parent should a) allow sunscreen or b) provide UV clothing and hat.

There's so much misinformation about suncream on social media at the moment. Even Julia Bradbury has jumped on the bandwagon 😔

She’s a fucking idiot. I’ve never heard anything like it. I’d be telling her that too. It’s pure neglect and that child may well end up with blisters not to mention sunstroke.

Ijustwanttobehealthy · 30/06/2025 19:44

Your friend is not neglectful to not use suncream (we don't either), but the nursery are in the wrong here to let the child out in the sun in a fucking heat wave.

Her child should have been kept inside, as all of them should have today to be honest, I don't know where you are but it's been 34 degrees C here where we are today.

Uifpdjjjj · 30/06/2025 19:44

While I wouldn’t say it’s neglect in itself, it is stupid.
Its also completely unacceptable for a nursery setting to allow a child to become sunburned in any way, let alone badly!

Away2000 · 30/06/2025 19:42

Nursery shouldn’t have let her out that long without any protection. Your friend needs to provide suitable clothes/hats if she’s going to be anti sunscreen. Maybe send her some information about the effects of getting repeatedly sunburnt? Did she say anything about the sunburn when you picked her up?

tripleginandtonic · 30/06/2025 19:41

Nursery should have kept her in the shade. But I'd have made mum cone and collect her if that screwed ratios.

Yes but does your skin burn easily though? I have the type of skin that doesn’t really tan and would burn in 15 mins hot sun with no sun cream on. I have been known to get sunburn in April in the past , avoiding the midday sun isn’t enough for some people.

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/06/2025 19:38

MissMoneyFairy · 30/06/2025 19:27

Both her mum and nursery are equally to blame, poor soul.

Agreed. Nursery should either have kept her indoors, or refused to have her there without lotion.

Both equally to blame.

RepoTheGeriatricOpera · 30/06/2025 19:37

When I worked in a nursery many years ago there was a parent like this.

We accepted the no suncream rule, but we absolutely didn't allow the child outside on the sun.

Yes it's neglect by the parent and nursery imo.

CopperWhite · 30/06/2025 19:37

The nursery were at fault for allowing a child to get burnt, but a parent who provides no sun protection at all is negligent.

If a parent chooses not to use sun cream then they need to provide sun suits, rash vests, hats, and be prepared to take their child home if the nursery has told them they will be spending time outside.

user2848502016 · 30/06/2025 19:37

I mean nursery should have kept the child indoors really so they are also to blame, but awful foolish behaviour from the mum

Fastertimer · 30/06/2025 19:36

Marii97 · 30/06/2025 19:27

I think she saw somewhere about toxic things in sun cream and them absorbing into skin. I said you can get organic but she said she’d prefer nothing. I was concerned with how burnt she was

Yes that’s awful!
Does she realise part of the reason skin cancer rates are going up is all the middle aged and above people were 60s/70s/80s babies who were out in the sun with no sun cream on and regularly getting sunburned, or sunbathing all day with nothing but baby oil on??

Marii97 · 30/06/2025 19:35

Yes, she seemed quite lethargic too
