Disrespectful or socially unaware DH.

Sunday afternoon I get home from a blisteringly hot busy shift that includes a couple of miles walk home.
Straight into a cool bath. The house is boiling so after a couple of sticky hours I decided to lie on my low sun lounger turned towards the left as I only have patterned top no bra and pj shorts on.
Fine it's cooler I can lie here and scroll on my phone.
DH who has had the day off comes out to water plants.Fine I said I would but he is doing it.
He then starts a conversation with the neighbour on the right causing the man to peak over as the fence he put in is six foot!!
I stay facing the other fence until I can sneak back in the patio door.
The thing is DH had already had chats with neighbour in the day.
When confronted DH said I could put a bikini on.
Am I'm being unreasonable to expect some privacy iny own garden.having worn a thick uniform all day.?

I do answer the door to delivery men in my pjs and I used to do chores in my undies.
I am a bit weird that I would wear clothes to phone someone even though they can't see me 🤣🤣
My DM told me I was letting the side down when I popped round Xmas eve when her fridge packed up and I guess that's where I get it from.

Am I socially unaware because I sometimes answer the door while wearing my nightshirt? I don't wear a bra underneath it, and I never wear makeup anyway. 😃

Surely you wear make up in bed. 😀. What is the world coming to? 🤣 You’ll be telling me that you let your partner see you naked next. 🤭

cupfinalchaos · 30/06/2025 17:23

It would piss me off as I also like my privacy

CarpetKnees · 30/06/2025 17:16

Shame there wasn't a poll.

Yare not only BU, but you are being ridiculous.

your poor husband. there is NOTHING about what you describe that suggests he is either disrespectful or socially unaware.
Your post is just bizarre.

StarlightLady · 30/06/2025 16:32

With these references to no bra and no make up, is this a reference to red lipstick on the nipples? 🥹🤣🤭

Thank you I agree.
Hot and not wanting to be noticed as make up free braless older lady.
My bad .

The horror - an older lady with no bra AND no make up!

Being seen not wearing a bra is a very weird thing to be stressed about. Do you think your neighbour doesn’t know you’ve got <whispers> breasts? I’d have probably just been in my pants and joined in the conversation!

Breathableflaps778 · 30/06/2025 06:10

Just have a firm word with your dh saying that you do not appreciate him initiating a conversation with your neighbour when you are resting after a busy shift and sitting bra-less in the garden and can he use his bonce a bit more! It’s a bit of a non issue. Just explain that it makes you feel really uncomfortable and could he please think a bit more before acting?

Unless your dh has form for embarrassing you deliberately, or treats you badly generally, this can be easily resolved can’t it?

Sorry op but only you can know if he was being deliberately disrespectful or not, not a load of strangers on the internet who have no context and no idea how he behaves generally. Is there more background to this than you are explaining?

How obvious was it that she was braless? In a patterned top, it is unlikely to have been obvious, and even less likely that the neighbour would have noticed. If her DH did not notice, then I cannot see what the issue is.

PeapodMcgee · 30/06/2025 15:47

You don't have to change your appearance for the next door neighbour.

It's not shameful to be seen with fresh make-up-free face and floppy breasts under a top. You are not a show pony on display.

Neighbour likely didn't notice, didn't care, and if they did you shouldn't care anyway.

omz · 30/06/2025 15:38

You were dressed

You were happy enough being outside

Neighbour could've peered over at any point

Unclench OP

Topseyt123 · 30/06/2025 15:36

What a complete non-issue. You had a patterned top and shorts on. Don't be daft!

How the fuck was your DH meant to know you had problem with your neighbour seeing you with no makeup on in your garden? You’re being weird.

Do you generally have make up and a bra on when you’re pottering about your house?

BrightYellowDaffodil · 30/06/2025 15:27

Honestly, it's 2025. Women are perfectly able to sit in their own gardens - and go out in public if they wish - with no bra and no make up. I should imagine your neighbour wouldn't even have noticed unless your tits were dragging on the patio.

Kbroughton · 30/06/2025 15:16

Why wouldn't you just speak to your husband? Hey Harold, next time don't speak to the neighbour when I have my tits out.

I gave up wearing bras at home a long time ago!

maudelovesharold · 30/06/2025 15:12

Your neighbour won’t know or care that they’re PJ shorts or that you presumably had no knickers underneath them.

Unless he was straining hard he won’t have noticed you wearing no bra under your top - especially as it was patterned so any rogue nipples would have been camouflaged.

OnyourbarksGSG · 30/06/2025 15:11

Jesus, I thought you were pissed off because you were sat in just boxer bottoms with nothing at ask on top. I didn’t raise you had a top on and I really, REALLY do not see what the fuss is. If you don’t want to be seen in your garden without a bra, don’t go in your garden without a bra 😂🤷🏼‍♀️. It’s nothing at all to do with your DH who was doing you a favour after you said you would water the plants.

my poor neighbours have seen me fighting to get washing off the line in just my bra and knickers and really it’s no big deal. I one left the bathroom window open full while showering and i was naked. I couldn’t care less 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ihopeyouhavent · 30/06/2025 15:07

Does your neighbour have xray vision? Or a thing for 60yr old women wearing a top with no bra while laying down in the garden?!

So very odd what people get upset by. And you cant tell you DH when he can and cant talk to the neighbours!

StarlightLady · 30/06/2025 15:06

JudgeJ · 30/06/2025 15:02

You wear a bra in this heat? When I was still at the chalk face, when I reached the second set of traffic lights away from school my bra was off, even in my open top car!
I have my commando dress, long floaty and baggy, which is my hot weather in the garden garb.

Apart from when at work l haven’t worn a bra or knix for nearly 2 weeks. Day off today and working from home tomorrow. Nothing underneath and no plans to do cartwheels 😀.

flightymadam · 30/06/2025 15:01

I don't know about your NDN, the fence etc but I understand there are times when you don't want to be seen in a less 'upholstered' (!!) way. You may have a top on but the boobs, if ample, are obvious in shape and movement ...this is hard to explain without sounding weird. There are situations where I wouldn't want to be seen dressed but without under garments with certain people around so I think I get it, OP.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 30/06/2025 14:58

I go out and feed the birds in a T shirt and shorts combo (my pjs). I must admit that I would probably scuttle if my (mid 20s) male neighbour was out and about but I'd still chat to him over the fence. All my other neighbours are female and we frequently encounter one another in various bra-less situations. I'm mid 60s and nobody turns a hair.

I think this is a 'you' thing, OP. You felt vulnerable, but your DH wasn't to know this.

mrsm43s · 30/06/2025 14:53

It's your DH's garden too, and he's perfectly entitled to talk to the neighbour as and when he wants. It almost sounds like you think he should ask your permission!

You were dressed perfectly fine for laying in the garden, but if you were uncomfortable dressed like that then it up to you to go and change, not to try to control who your DH is allowed to talk to or not in his own garden!

So, yes, in answer to your question, you are being disrespectful trying to control your husband like this, and indeed socially unaware if you think that your choice of clothes (which you were fully in charge of) should impact on your DH's normal enjoyment of your shared garden.

party4you · 30/06/2025 14:46

whatisforteamum · 30/06/2025 05:35

I just think there are times when you are allowed to be under dressed and left alone.

How can you be under dressed in your own garden???? You’re being daft

Redpeach · 30/06/2025 14:44

That would annoy me too op. My dh used to do this with facetiming his mates, with me wandering around in the background in underwear. You are entitled to privacy whatever you're wearing.
