Nadiya Hussain responds to critics

I can understand her being upset that her shows have been axed, apparently ratings were falling, However, I find it hugely disappointing that she has brought race/religion into it. No one is entitled to a BBC show and I think she has had a bloody good run. AIBU?

Nadiya Hussain says she ‘won’t be grateful’ following BBC cooking show axe

Nadiya Hussain has spoken out following the cancellation of her BBC cooking show, delivering a powerful response to critics who told her to be “grateful”. The Great British Bake Off winner has enjoyed a 10-year relationship with the broadcaster followi...

Good for her. She spoke eloquently about her experience without being rude or contemptuous. She just spoke about how she felt, I think.

Yeah I understand. As someone from another country working in the UK, I've been constantly told I have to be "grateful" to the UK for apparently taking me in and clothing and feeding me 🙄 when really if I were French or something I'd be considered an expat.

I don't want to be British, I just came here to study (just as a Brit would at an Ivy League, without the expectation they should be "grateful" to America) and work (again, just as a Brit Magic Circle employee would plumb for BigLaw in the US) and earn money, thanks. I beat out other Brits on my own merit so nope no gratitude there. It must be worse for Nadiya though because unlike me she wants acceptance and inclusion as a fellow Brit here.

Edited

I went to uni in the USA from the UK. I was super grateful for it. Had a great time. I was really lucky. Why wouldn’t you be grateful to get that amazing opportunity to study in another country? I think there is a lot of entitlement on this thread. I think people should be super grateful for any opportunities they get. Many people don’t get them at all.

SmugglersHaunt · 29/06/2025 17:58

My god what a sense of entitlement! So is she supposed to be gifted endless TV series, because of what?! If the ratings weren’t good then it will be cancelled. It’s not difficult to understand. She’s had ten good years of the back of a reality TV show which is way more than pretty much everyone else. Sadly her tantrum won’t exactly endear her to production companies or channels

Lavendersong · 29/06/2025 17:51

Anyone would be grateful to have their own show on TV for 10 years

that’s a bloody long time

I don’t know why she’s bringing race and religion into it

I can’t see what that has to do with it at all

She’s become annoying and her dishes are really not that great.

Seriously though, there's no such thing as a "Brit" other than a word on a passport.

People whose family history goes back thousands of years on this land have exactly the same status as a "Brit" as millions of people from a huge number of countries around the world who acquired the "Brit" passport in the last few decades.

So what exactly does she want to be accepted as?

The millions of people that came here to acquire "Brit" passport status have created a "Brit" thing that exists entirely separate from this land.

It's only a concept now.

"Brit" has no actual meaning at all. So she wants acceptance as a "Brit"?

By whom exactly? You have a lot of nationalities to ask that question of.

Because of the numbers arriving here is she actually asking for acceptance from any particular cohort?
She should equally be asking for acceptance from the millions of nationalities with "Brit" passports.

"Brit" isn't a white people thing. The people that arrived have made "Brit" mean absolutely anyone from anywhere.

Lavendersong · 29/06/2025 17:44

I can’t stand her anymore she’s so annoying and has been for years. I loved her at the start after GBBO but each time she comes on TV my heart sinks and I switch over or forward.

She should be grateful she’s been on TV for so long

and who knows they probably kept her on for longer than necessary due to her religion.

Her dishes aren’t great and that dreadfully embarrassing cake she cooked for the Queen. Cringe.

Not grateful to America, but grateful for the circumstances which allowed them to study at an elite university, a privilege which is not granted to many who might be just as gifted.

Similarly, many very talented chefs do not get their own BBC show for a decade. So that too is something to be grateful for.

Gratitude does not mean denying your own talent or hard work, nor does it imply any sort of subservience.

You must be absolutely exhausted by your superiority. Have a lie down, dear.

The irony.

Akuna · 29/06/2025 17:41

Incorrect. They've listened to her in full and properly and understand what she's saying as they've likely experienced the same. But I'm not about to get deep into this now there's no point. Have a great rest of your weekend and don't forget sunscreen it's hot out here.

Katypp · 29/06/2025 17:38

Oh I do apologise for not falling in line with your attempts to educate me
Please stand down and don't worry about me.

Shocked and slightly amused at the poor reasoning here. Alright one more time now for the slow ones 🤡

Of course you need to use a like for like example!! That’s a basic part of proving your point.

For example if a very well known Black female celeb was singled out among a bunch of celebs and turned away from a celebrity club while her white peers were let in it’s pretty obvious that aside from some exceptional circumstances the likely explanation is racism. So then if a non-famous white person doesn't get in the same club and goes “see that shows it’s not racism against the black celebrity” 🤦🏽‍♀️ See how daft it sounds?

To even start to show it’s not racism, you would need to be comparing this Black female celebs treatment by club management, with that of fellow white celebs of a similar profile/status.

To be comparing an “ordinary Jane” to a celebrity in this context is ludicrous-
and the fact that so many are is probably indicative of their own prejudice.

It’s not about saying the celeb is superior but just acknowledging that it’s a different situation, in the club example I used the likely reason for the non-famous white person being barred from the club was they were not famous and this hypothetical club is for A-listers.

But the (hypothetical) black female was a celeb, so why wasn’t she admitted to the club with all her white famous mates?

Hmm…wonder why - Is it clicking now?!

I can’t work out if people are being deliberately obtuse here because this shouldn’t need to be explained over and over again.

I haven’t even looked into the Nadiyah thing beyond this thread and one article tbh so I don’t know too much of what’s been said to her, but white Jenny down the road being told to be grateful for her benefits or social housing doesn’t automatically disprove that ethnic minorities - at all levels- are told this specifically due to racism.

This thread started off well but looking at the last couple of pages it’s attracted a certain sort that can’t be reasoned with. Good luck to those bravely trying to explain basics to them - I’m out ✌🏽

It's incredibly predictable that you and others have concluded this particular part as being the issue thus glossing over all other context, instead of actually listening to Nadiyah's experiences, and her actual point. But it's cool, we see you.

But posters are basing their indignation about racism on absolutely nothing, just their feelings, which to be honest, look pretty skewed to me.
And being very rude and patronising on the process.
Having a different opinion does nit make me stupid.

Weepixie · 29/06/2025 17:31

I didn't think she was responding to the bbc, but to poster's who were telling her she should be grateful for the bbc taking her own and giving her work when her contract with them hadn't been renewed

You’d be as well banging your head against a brick wall than try to get some of the posters on this thread to understand the above.

Still watch James Martin and Rick Stein occasionally but that's because they travel to different countries.

Cormoransjacket · 29/06/2025 17:27

We love Nadiya in our house. She comes across as warm, funny and intelligent when she is on the television. I am particularly fond of her because watching endless repeats of the same few episodes of "Nadiya Bakes" has helped my very anxious son with ASD so much.

EasternStandard · 29/06/2025 17:25

IcedPurple · 29/06/2025 17:18

Yeah, I said something similar above.

The 'celebrity chef' era is coming to an end. 'Veterans' like Jamie or Nigella still get shows, but I don't think even they draw the big audiences they used to. The idea of sitting down at 8 o'clock to spend an hour watching someone cook dishes you may not be interested in is a dated concept, when you have a whole world of recipes - with videos, nutritional info, different options etc - just minutes away on your phone or laptop.

When I got a fancy for chocolate cheesecake a few months ago, I just googled and instantly had a variety of different possibilities right there. Yes, watching someone cook things you might not have considered can be inspirational and interesting, but it doesn't have the appeal it had before the internet made searching for recipes so easy.

Exactly. It was a good run for those involved while it lasted. But people move on.

I think presenters can find it tough as the tv game can be. Sometimes you get a bts look at how they felt and they can feel used. It’s still something people want to do, but there are ups and downs.

Extravirginolive · 29/06/2025 17:24

Well this all bodes well for the future of a huge number of different ethnic nationality people living side by side on these little islands.

I'm glad you're out because you're extremely rude and patronising.

As has been mentioned above many times if you'd bothered to look, celebrity chefs - whatever the gender or ethnic and religious background - tend to have a short 'shelf line'. The Jamies and Nigellas are the exception. This show had been losing viewers so it's not surprising that BBC decided to call it a day after a decade. That's a shame for all involved, but the entertainment business is pretty brutal, especially as traditional TV is increasingly threatened by the streamers and the internet.

Not everything is about race. It just isn't.

IcedPurple · 29/06/2025 17:18

MarySueSaidBoo · 29/06/2025 17:07

I'd also add that in terms of baking, I'd agree with a PP who mentioned Instagram. I've become a huge fan of Jane's Pattisserie - never made a bad cake/cheesecake following her recipes, she goes through it all in simple stages and her website/books are brilliant. In fact, she's got 2 of my daughters into baking. No BBC show needed. Same with Becky Excell - her gluten free cup of tea website is brilliant and I've got 2 of her books for the two coeliac's in the family. People just look for cooking advice in other places to the TV these days.
