To say this weather is causing me to become depressed

I know it sounds like I’m some sort of misery reveller, after all long hot days are supposed to be what we all love, but I’m really, genuinely struggling.

I haven’t slept well for weeks due to the heat and neither have the children. Late nights and early wake ups. Stuffy bedrooms even with fans circulating,

During the day it’s so hot. When in work I feel like I’m slowly melting in stuffy classrooms with kids whining endlessly about water bottles and crackling ice. On my days off (I’m part time) it’s often overwhelming, especially in the middle of the day. Constantly worrying about the children burning - one insisted on standing outside yesterday just for the hell of it with no hat or sun cream and had to be dragged in forcefully. Everyone’s just irritable with one another, the car is like an oven when you get in it, flies, fucking FLIES.

And there’s this low level pressure to be out enjoying it. One of our soft play centres has actually put out an appeal just begging people to attend because the hot weather means it’s been empty for weeks.

I want autumn now. I want coolness and leaves turning and rain.

It’s not nice to feel that way. Do you have a garden? How old are your kids? Are you able to set up some water play for them? You sound overly anxious- they will be ok outside for 10 minutes without sun cream. Forcefully dragging them in sounds like you are being overly dramatic. Try to go at a slower pace , lots of cold drinks and ice lollies from the supermarket. Get the hose out . Put your feet in a bucket and chill.

I'm enjoying it but agree it's not easy to teach in the heat. I think we're at tbe stage of having had enough warm summers that something needs to be done about overly warm classrooms. It definitely affects children's progress as no one is working at their best.

Agree with this. I'm not a teacher but I dont understand why we dont put air con in schools. My dc went to a new build secondary school which was all glass fronted and they didn't fit air con.

Dangermoo · 29/06/2025 07:40

I find the older you get, you tend to become less tolerant to the sun. There's also the threat of skin cancer, that's always on my mind.

TheNuthatch · 29/06/2025 07:38

I used to adore the heat, until I hit 40. I don't mind it when Im off work, but like you its a struggle on weekdays. It hasn't been hot for a few weeks where I live, but it is ramping up again now.
I would highly recommend a portable air conditioner if you can find the money. We have one in the bedroom and it's brilliant. They had some in Lidl for around £150 recently. That would at least help you sleep. Everything is harder when you're permanently tired.

At night, put your fans on the windowsills in front of open windows. I’ve not had a sleepless night so far this year. I’ve even gone back under the covers because it’s got a little chilly.

That really works?

Last year was shit but at least part of the problem is that I suspect by the time the schools break up it will be distinctly autumnal!

Another reason to move to Scotland, they’ve broken up!

chatgptsbestmate · 29/06/2025 07:29

You're not wrong to hate the heat. I hate it too. Anything above 25 C IN THE SUN (so 20 C ish in the shade) is unbearable for me

Also my house (all houses?) suck up the heat and are HOT for days after the heatwave has passed

And I lived in Australia for a while. 25 C here is like 40C in Adelaide (imo)

RosesAndHellebores · 29/06/2025 07:27

It is unbearably hot and with 33 forecast for Monday/Tuesday.

Are you maximising the coolness of your House @allofusare. Are you keeping curtains and windows closed during the day and opening them in the late evening to let in the cool air? It does help.

I'm planning to start gardening at about 8.15 to get in a couple of hours before it heats up.

I would prefer it this way than dark and icy and like sitting in the garden until 11pm but have grown up children and can pace. I can avoid some of it by wfh but not tomorrow and am dreading it. It must be difficult for you with the children in your class.

When ours were little, I used to multi-task - water them and the garden at the same time. They loved it - once or twice I gave them soap and it did as bathtime.

cantthinkofausername26 · 29/06/2025 07:27

I’m with you! I bloody hate summer. Also a teacher in a 32 degree classroom!

Squidgemoon · 29/06/2025 07:24

Air conditioning in the bedrooms, it’s the best money we’ve ever spent. Get a decent big fan for your classroom, you can buy massive ones from Screwfix that really make a difference. We have this one:

On a really hot day last year my DH let our DS’s class teacher borrow it for their classroom and they were so grateful!

I am guessing you are in the rather hot south where the medical profession is geared towards a risk to life on account of the heat rather than somewhere else in the uk

but hey - let’s enjoy the damaging heat shall we ?

they estimated 600 excess deaths occurred a few weeks ago, and I guess the same over the next few days

we do get excess deaths in cold spells - but the difference is that after the cold spell the death rate drops as the people who die in the cold often didn’t have long to live anyway. Deaths due to heat however add to the years death rate - these would not have happened

yes cold and wet isn’t fun but that doesn’t mean we have to say excess heat is fun or better - objectively it’s worse

🤣 just a slight overreaction!!

As someone else said, look at installing air con in main bedroom, and children can camp out on airbeds in there on hot nights, bring a TV in and make it a 'slumber party'.

I'm absolutely with you, I hate anything over 25 degrees. But we are trying our best to turn it into a positive thing just for my own mental wellbeing - we eat cold food or bbq to avoid oven heating house further, go to air conditioned cinemas, restaurants, swimming pool to cool down. Hot weekends we can manage like this, but week days when children in hot classrooms are much tougher.

It'll be banned as soon as MNHQ start shift. It's been at it for hours.

Mumsnet makes at least £2 million in profit each year. Its incredible after all that's happened over the last few months that they are still not paying for overnight moderators.

Beautiful in the north west ❤️
I’m assuming London is a nightmare at the moment

Myfridgeiscool · 29/06/2025 07:18

I’m not enjoying having to get up really early to take the dog out then having to hide inside; sunshine is nice, excessive heat makes things less enjoyable.

IShouldNotCoco · 29/06/2025 07:00

I think YABU generally because I prefer it to be like this than bloody cold and rain. Last year we had one solitary week of good weather in the summer.

Well yes. It's not even particularly warm in Yorkshire, and I loathe autumn and winter, but that doesn't negate how the OP feels just now.

mellongoose · 29/06/2025 07:15

Come to Cornwall. We haven’t seen the sun in days!

Sadmummy3 · 29/06/2025 07:15

I love warm weather and sunshine. Don't worry OP school breaks up fairly soon it's bound to be raining and cold by then (and probably the whole summer holiday)

RedRiverHog · 29/06/2025 07:14

I agree. I'm fed up of late and early dog walks and struggling to sleep in the small gap between.
I work in a bakery and the massive ovens make me want to remove my skin!
I like the sun and the long days but not the constant humid heat.

I'm sorry you feel like this, but it does seem extreme. I don't have any practical suggestions, but it is likely to be short lived.
