Neighbours having their own Glasto this evening

About 4 houses along on the adjoining road (our back gardens join on to each other) are having their own version of Glastonbury this evening. They have a music system set up and a DJ. Bizarrely, I can’t hear the sounds of partying / people as such.

it is ridiculously loud and I can’t even have a conversation in my back garden without shouting. The gardens are tiny, only about 10m x 20m so it is less than 50m away.

I have all my windows shut and can still hear it perfectly in every room.

my only hope is that they started at 6.30pm so maybe it’ll finish early. [clutches at straws]

I accept it is a 1 off, and don’t mind the occasional party, but the noise levels are totally inappropriate for the middle of a residential area whatever time of day it is. There are kids around trying to get to sleep now, and they’ll have no chance. .

I can’t even give up and dance to it, as it is shit european folky stuff. Lots of wailing and accordions and the like.

I rang 101 for advice, and they gave me the local out of hours number for the council, but the answerphone message said they were closed when I called them.

aibu for being really pissed off - not at the party as such - just the ridiculously loud music?

For goodness sake, how many times do I need to say that this was not just loud music. It was festival level music with a sound system and a DJ.

I have said at least once that it was the level of the music that was the issue.

If you read my original thread correctly I rang 101 for advice. Advice. Not to complain or call the police. ‘Usual’ party noise I would never complain about, but this was beyond that, so I rang for advice. Also, at 8pm I had no idea it would stop by 10* . It could have still been going on at midnight or later so I was afree advice to see if things were different once that time threshold had been reached.

*it stopped when the near neighbour went round to ask them to turn it down and was punched, so the police were called and attended anyway.

Use google for advice you rang the police because you thought the would go round and tell them to be quiet but they didn't as nobody cares if people are making noise at 8pm in the summer on a weekend

I would bloody hate this but also think as it’s a one off and summer etc, I’d go on booking.com and get a cheap room for the night.

No such thing as a cheap room round here and I don’t have a spare £100+ to accommodate inconsiderate neighbours.

Tbh I actually cant believe someone called 101 because their neighbour was playing some loud folk music at 8pm on a Saturday

It was off before 11pm. It was a one off. Hardly a massive issue.

I love it. I love this site.

Nb I'd find it annoying, of course I would. But as a one off I'd tell myself to not be a crank.

Or rather stop being a crank

Ringing 101 for a party at 8pm om a Sunmer Saturday is peak mumsnet

Agree!

heartsinvisiblefury · 29/06/2025 19:41

If it’s a one off then surely you can let it go and just let them have their party.

Every night then that’s a different issue but come on, it’s one night.

I think it’s quite different if it’s a one off vs regular parties. For a one off, even if it’s a loud rock band in a tiny garden it’s fine until 10pm on weekends, but I’m talking about once a year at most.

No. If you want a loud rock band you hire a village hall or other venue. You don’t have it in a tiny garden in a row of other houses.

I don’t understand how they can’t feel paranoid. I had people over today, music on quiet but I still kept turning down because I don’t want to piss neighbours off. My partner keeps saying “it’s not even loud” and I know he’s right but I just don’t think we need it any louder than background music. I like my neighbours , I want them to like me too

Yeah, I don’t think people who do this care about their neighbours liking them.

It used to be a thing that if you were going to have a loud party you’d invite your neighbours. Then they could either join in or at least be warned and go elsewhere till it was over. Guess people don’t do that anymore.

Words · 29/06/2025 19:05

That would drive me wild.

Ponderingwindow · 29/06/2025 18:14

All the posts responding, it’s a one off, it’s summer, etc, make me
very happy to live somewhere very upright where amplified sound that crosses the border of your property in a residential neighborhood is illegal. Cultural differences and all, but that would drive me crazy.

They were called and they have attended.

Good

This is precisely why those who love playing amplified music in their gardens should be housed together in the same area with others who do too. Those who want peace and nature sounds (I wonder how disturbing wildlife find loud music?) can be housed in a different area.

Everyone would be happy

Just like there shouldn’t be a quiet carriage on the train but a couple of noisy ones. Everyone who wants to watch videos and make calls at full volume can piss off there leaving the rest of us in peace.

Americano75 · 29/06/2025 16:59

Normal noise is one thing, but noise like that is bloody selfish.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 29/06/2025 16:23

I agree. It’d never happen and would be impossible to police (what’s ’too loud’ in either area), plus imagine the rage if as a peace loving person your area was suddenly zoned ‘noisy’ or vice versa.

However it does sort of exist already socioecononically. Or at least it seems like it in my experience

Horseebooks · 28/06/2025 22:30

one of my favourite things about where I live is that people have a lot of parties in the summer, quite often with the exact music you describe, or else latin pop. I fully get that it’s not for everyone but it brings me joy and means I don’t need to worry about playing music in the garden either if I want to. Genuinely sometimes worry that the area will change and it’ll stop!

Because 6am on a weekend is unreasonable. 9pm isn’t. HTH.

Being able to hear someone else’s music inside your house with the windows shut is unreasonable regardless of the time of day. HTH.

zingally · 29/06/2025 11:06

My neighbours did the same. Their garden joins mine. It started about 8:30pm and I finally stopped being aware of it at some point after 2am. It wasn't the music so much, but the loud shouty voices.
They do it about every 6 weeks, all year round. It's VERY annoying.

"You don't need to worry about other people's kids"
And there it is, the authentic voice of a self-centred society...

YANBU OP - an ccasional party is fine; rock concert level noise in small gardens is just antisocial.

I mean the op doesn’t need to get stressed about other peoples kids (that might not even exist). Let their parents do that.

user1476613140 · 29/06/2025 09:17

Holidays have already arrived for some of us.

Boredlass · 29/06/2025 09:10

I’d rather hear that than screaming kids all day in the summer. I’m dreading the holidays
