DH and the washing machine

Just looking for some perspective on this as sometimes I think I'm going mad. We returned last night from a week's holiday - obviously with the usual dirty laundry and like most women I'm keen to crack on and get the laundry started and out on the line. This morning DH got the cases in from the car so I thought I'd get the first wash load on ahead of going out to get groceries for us as well as my demented mother to whom I would need to deliver said groceries.[Lives alone with a small care package] and obviously haven't seen her so would need to catch up and make sure she's O.K, etc
DH fully aware of this plan [and the fact that I always start the washing as soon as the cases are in from the car]. He was taking our dog out for a run whilst I cracked on with above jobs. No issue with that - usual routine. However the next thing I can hear the washing machine going so I asked DH what was in the washing machine. Dog towels he says. Dog towels says I? What? Now - today when I've got a case load of dirty holiday washing to do? Yes, you guessed it - all this hot weather and he decides to put a load of muddy dog towels on that he's been storing in his boot since the last wet weather so obviously not newly muddy or needed to be washed today or likely to be used imminently given the current heatwave. He does not understand why under the above circumstances I'm so cross that he has prioritised laundering the bloody dog towels. So, AIBU to be really cross with DH this morning as he seems to think so having just stormed out with said dog ? [So as not to drip feed he has form fror this kind of thing and often has his own agenda where it doesn't occur to him to consider anyone else's needs.]

This would irritate me too - some men just don't have much common sense. He probably thought he was doing a good thing 😂

NewMrsF · 28/06/2025 17:39

It’s only washing. Unless they are the only clothes you own and your stood there naked waiting for them to be cleaned while your guest are imminent I think you need to get a grip tbh.
I can’t imagine getting home from a holiday and being pissed off by day one.

TyrannasaurusJex · 28/06/2025 17:38

you lost me at "like most women..." I'm afraid 🤢

AngelicKaty · 28/06/2025 17:37

@recklessgran YANBU - your DH was either thoughtless or lacks common sense - I'd be annoyed too OP. You had your day planned - break the back of the holiday washing, shopping, check in with mum, host friends - and your DH buggered up your plan from the get-go with a totally unimportant and non-urgent task. On the upside, the weather forecast for most of England (assuming this is where you are) for the next five days is HOT and dry, so chuck what you haven't got washed in the laundry basket, enjoy your friends' company and get the rest of the washing done tomorrow. 😃

supersop60 · 28/06/2025 17:36

I would prioritise human clothes over dog towels (or other linens) YANBU.
My DP is obsessed with emptying the laundry basket, to the extent that there could be three wet loads and not enough drying space.
i do as much as I can on a quick wash at 30C and often change the settings in a wash that DP has started.

I hope you've left dh's laundry for him to do. Since he knows how to use the machine.

I never understand this tit for tat pettiness

Mymanyellow · 28/06/2025 09:57

This is why nobody is allowed anywhere near my washing machine. I know what you’re all thinking;make them do their own, teach them all to use it properly etc. But nope keep away I’ll find you a hundred different jobs.

I can't imagine being in a relationship that's so controlling you're not allowed to use the household appliances. How weird.

Pedallleur · 28/06/2025 17:31

Sort the washing into colours etc. towels out and he can put the next lot in then hang the dog towels out. Simple (I hope)

Allergictoironing · 28/06/2025 17:30

I can see the OP's point, and I'm not exactly the best at getting washing done. I think what would annoy me is that the dog towels must have been festering in the car since before they went away so why are they suddenly so urgent today? If the same routine is followed every time they go on holiday you'd think her DH would know by now that she likes the washing done asap.

For those saying about getting it done when they get in, I'm usually completely knackered and it's often quite late when I got home from holidays. The very thought of sorting & putting a wash on, then wait for it to finish so I can get everything out & hang it up overnight, when all I can think of is my own bed, would be anathema to me. Not everyone has a washing machine that can be set to start by a timer, and mine just beeps louder and louder if you don't at least turn it off after a wash has finished. I could sort of understand if you came home on a Sunday & had work on the Monday, and for some strange reason had taken all your work clothes on holiday, but otherwise one day isn't that much in the scheme of things

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 28/06/2025 17:29

I understand the urge to get holiday washing done and put away but that's just habit. It really won't matter if it has to wait a couple of hours or even a couple of days. It seems a very little thing to argue about.

You’re amazing x

i know, thanks for noticing.

Kazzybingbong · 28/06/2025 17:22

BashfulClam · 28/06/2025 16:59

You left the cases in the car overnight??? I would have had them in no matter what time and the first load in the machine on timer to start in the morning. Our cases are emptied and put away straight away.

You’re amazing x

Kazzybingbong · 28/06/2025 17:21

‘Most women’ come on, let’s not generalise women down to being compelled to put a wash on after a holiday 🥴

You are massively overreacting. It’s mildly annoying at the most.

HaileyBailey · 28/06/2025 17:21

recklessgran · 28/06/2025 10:07

He's back already and faffing about in the garden. I'm still waiting for the machine to finish. Thanks for the perspective - guess I've got too much to do today - two lovely house guests turning up this afternoon hence why I wanted to get everything done so we can enjoy their company.

Why can’t you enjoy the company of your guests unless the holiday washing is all done?

CoralOP · 28/06/2025 17:18

It's an absolute non issue.

InfoSecInTheCity · 28/06/2025 17:17

I’m of a similar mindset with the holiday wash, I literally bring the case in, empty it immediately into the machine and turn it on. It’s fully empty and everything where it should be within 5 minutes of arriving home.

This wouldn’t bother me too much though, it’s a hot day the towels will be dry within a couple of hours during which time the clothes wash could have been done ready to replace the towels.

Ihopeyouhavent · 28/06/2025 17:14

LTB obviously!! How dare he not follow the rules 😂

Definitelyrandom · 28/06/2025 17:12

Both the holiday wash and the dog towels need doing so it doesn’t make a lot of odds. But then DH does all the washing machine loading and unloading (and is far too punctilious about ironing, in my view). And we mostly put washes on overnight on the cheaper tariff anyway.

Mindymomo · 28/06/2025 17:01

Wow, my DH doesn’t know how to work washing machine (apparently) despite being a plumber and installing 100’s. I wouldn’t be too annoyed, the dog towels do smell.

BashfulClam · 28/06/2025 16:59

You left the cases in the car overnight??? I would have had them in no matter what time and the first load in the machine on timer to start in the morning. Our cases are emptied and put away straight away.

Ritzitup · 28/06/2025 16:57

I'd be more upset about having 2 guests to stay today after only getting back from holiday last night!

Missing the point I know but this would upset me far more than the washing!

AmyDudley · 28/06/2025 16:55

Its a bit annoying (and totally the sort of thing my XH would have done, only he would have done it deliberately to be a dick)
But I have to say that I have spent the day rooting about the house for stuff to wash because everything is drying in about half an hour, so all the dogs blankets, cushion covers, and various winter jackets have been bundled through before the country goes back to being damp and miserable.

I'm more annoyed about the fact that my neighbour is playing George Ezra on a loop very loudly in her garden, if I have to hear Shotgun one more time she'll be getting bundled into the machine and boil washed.

TheodoraCrumpet · 28/06/2025 16:55

It would annoy me too, OP, because my washing machine is an officious bastard that decides for itself when the washing is clean, whatever cycle I choose, and would keep muddy dog towels in there for ages. If you wanted something specific washed and dried, the delay would boil my piss. Not great on a hot weekend. Nothing to do with being inflexible about routines. Maybe OP wanted to lie outside in a bikini that needed to be washed.

Petitchat · 28/06/2025 16:55

ClairDeLaLune · 28/06/2025 10:51

Mine would be dry and ironed by now 😂

🤣 🤣 🤣

My husband is great at putting the washing on. Then leaving it in there for a few hours to get nice and creased before he puts it on the line. Then takes it in and leaves it all crumpled up in the washing basket until I put the clothes away. (He works from home and I work 10 hour days). Yes there are bigger things to be irritated about and people tell me I should be grateful that he even puts it on 🙄 but we have the right to be annoyed. I would be annoyed too.

I'd stop doing his wash. Separate yours out and do it properly. Leave him to figure out his own. A ten year old could do better than this man.
